http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/05/23/bus.boy.ap/index.html Police: Boy, 8, releases parking brake, bus runs over girl NEW YORK (AP) -- An 8-year-old boy was in custody after he sneaked onto a school bus and released its parking brake, causing it to roll forward and fatally strike a second-grader, police said Tuesday. Officer Doris Garcia had said the boy was to be charged with criminally negligent homicide. But police later directed followup queries to the city's corporation counsel, which would handle the case if it goes to family court. That office was still examining the issue Tuesday, said spokeswoman Kate Ahlers. The boy's name was being withheld because of his age. Amber Sadiq, 8, was crossing the street near her school Monday afternoon when she was struck by the bus in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights. "She tried to run, but the garbage can was in the way," said 12-year-old Kassandra Polanco, who saw the bus bearing down on the girl. Councilwoman Letitia James, who represents parts of Brooklyn, said a "concerned citizen" saw two boys -- the 8-year-old and a 10-year-old -- climbing into the bus through the emergency door, which does not lock. The woman removed the boys from the bus, and then at some point the bus started rolling down the street, James said. Keith Kalb, a spokesman for the Department of Education, said the bus driver, who worked for Jofaz Transportation, had finished his rounds and was on his lunch break. Deli worker Sam Ahmad said he saw the girl under the bus and called 911. He said he and about a dozen other men tried to lift the yellow bus to free her but it was too heavy. A neighbor, 14-year-old Christen Delacruz, described Amber as a tidy girl whose clothes were always ironed and who was always on time for school. Relatives said she was a straight-A student. "She was sunshine," Lucy Caba said of her niece. "She was such a happy kid. No matter what, she always had a smile." |

I doesn't sound to me from reading your post that they intended for the bus to run over the girl. A couple of foolish kids, and a tragic accident. Who was suppossed to be supervising these kids? They if anyone should be held responsible. |

I agree, and there was a time when the case would have been treated as such. |

What a stupid case. It was a stupid stupid accident. A stupid, TRAGIC accident, the poor little lamb that got killed, gosh I can only imagine her families pain, but, I bet even they realize it was a freak accident. What a total waste of court time. The little boy is going to be messed up for life. He didn't mean to kill or even hurt the little girl, he did what probably every single one of you grown men did at one time, sit behind the wheel and pretend to drive. I hope someone smartens up soon. |

Justine That doesn't just apply to men, lots of girls can't wait to get behind the wheel. The other day my 13 year old granddaughter (who I'm helping raise) said to me while I was driving down the road with her in the car, "let me steer grandpa, my mom let's me steer while driving". I replied, "that's not good logic, just because your mom does something stupid and irresonsible is not a good reason for me to do the same". IMO there are just so many in our society that literally should not be allowed to propogate. But, they are at an alarming rate. Incidents such as this are going to be more frequent unfortunately. My 12 year old grandson went to a birthday party and overnight sleep over at a friends house last weekend. The invitation said the boys were going to be playing war games with their plastic BB revolvers and they should bring eye protection (safety goggles). I go to pick him up the next day, and he can't open his eye because he got shot in the eye. We ended up taking him in for medical care, and they prescribed medication for it. No serious damage fortunately. Anyway, from what I gather the war games were supposed to be over, and the boys settling down in their sleeping bags, when some continued shooting, and he caught one in the eye. Left to themselves kids will do reckless and irresponsible behavior. But, my question was, why weren't these kids properly supervised. And, that IMO goes right back to the fact that there is a plethora of people having kids today, who don't have a clue about what it takes to be a good responsible parent. |
