This guy, Fareed Zakaria, writes some insightful stuff. Here's a comment from What the World Really Wants:
Quote:

The United States should stand for and help promote freedom around the world. But we can do so effectively only if we ally ourselves with the aspirations of the people we are trying to help. For many of them, the great struggle going on in so much of the world today is to end civil strife, corruption, extreme poverty and disease, which destroy not just democracy but society itself.
Politics is the art of achieving the maximum amount of freedom for individuals that is consistent with the maintenance of social order.

I wonder if we should be more concerned about our own hemesphere. Chavez of Venezuela represses his people (not unlike Castro), uses his oil money not so much to better the lives of his own people but to buy the people of other South American and Central American nations and meddles in their politics, also uses the drug cartels to his advantage and purposes, befriends Iran and their nuclear interests and perhaps to his own interests/power. President Fox is concerned with Chavez's influence in Mexico. If Fox is concerned, maybe we should be also ..... considering our border problems.
