Ken "The main purpose of a central government is to "provide for the common defense" and that isn't happening......" Wasn't aware we'd been invaded. Mexico did send it's army up here to feed Katrina victims. |

What good is a fence without razer wire or eletric charge or a gun tower.

Many people who live near the border would take issue with the "we haven't been invaded" statement. These Americans are having their property destroyed by and face a very real threat from armed foreigners. Call this what you will but if the US Government has a duty to protect these citizens. Ken |

I agree with this and I have close relatives giving me their first hand, on-going experiences with theft and damage done to their houses and fences..... here in TX and in AZ. I wouldn't want to put up with that, and I don't expect them to have to endure it, either. |

At least Bush, in his Yuma speech, seemed to take a stronger & clearer stand towards securing borders, English being spoken, more detention facilities for those ILLEGALS caught, etc. Still lots of unanswered questions though, but we just have to trust our government that they'll figure it out in an effective way.

Trust the government. One run by--as Jane so succinctly put it--a bunch of liars? |

Perhaps there should be a new thread on the English Language overreaction. We do need secure borders. Those who have entered the country illegally need to be held accountable, not just handed a ticket to citizinship. But, the English Language legislation is going overboard IMO. |

Just in on MSNBC about how 50 million Mexicans want to come to the U.S. because of Mexico being in near economic ruin and with a pretty much corrupt government. It would cost billions to build a double fence like the Israelis built (vehicle patrols between the two) with a razer wire in front of the double fence, to cover the 2000 mile border. Maybe it would be less costly and more practical just to annex Mexico, divide it into 3-4 more states, the government would then be under our corrupt government instead of Mexico's corrupt government, the American businesses there would come back under the U.S. rules and regs again, the locals would still work for less than their northern countrymen and be happier for it, not having to relocate and all. Then build the fence on the shorter Mexico/Guatemala border, less border to stop the cartel drug traffic. Everybody involved would be happy except maybe for Chavez and his expansionist program and the rest of the world who's not all that crazy about us anyway. Why not? We've got to beat China to it. |

Heard today it will cost billions to fence 300 some miles. Billions. Roll that over your tongue a few times. Sounds so goooood. Populist priorities. |
