Finally Getting Some Border Fences!; I guess congress feels the public's pain

Looks like we will get some fencing after all. Sure, they are likely only doing this as a political move in response to what some say is the biggest public outcry in decades. But, who cares!? At least something will be done (hopefully) to secure the borders better.

Senate approves physical border barriers

And for those that might say a border fence doesn't work, see here: USA Today - San Deigo Fence Works, but possible environmental issues

Quote:

Annual arrests of illegal immigrants in the fenced sections have dropped to 3,000 from about 25,000 over the past three years. It's so hard to get across that people aren't trying, say officials with Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, part of the Department of Homeland Security.

Crime drops off

"Violent crimes in that area have virtually come to a stop," San Diego police Sgt. Juan Gonzales says. "Where once there were hundreds of illegal immigrants, and they were preyed upon by smugglers and bandits, now we almost never see them or get reports of violent crimes at all."

Hopefully they don't screw this up too - like putting holes in the fence so the desert tortoise or coyotes (animal version) can get through, or some other impotent measures!

What, some 300 miles? What's the border, 1400? How much per foot?

Must've gotten my number from a crow. 1952 miles, is it even possible?

Gonzales in THE SITUATION ROOM
Quote:

BLITZER: Give us your -- tell our viewers who aren't familiar your personal story, how you got to where you are, your grandparents, your parents. They struggled, they came here. I don't know if they came here legally or illegally, but give us the story.

GONZALES: Well, three of my grandparents were born in Mexico. They came to Texas. My parents -- both of my parents were born in Texas, extremely poor. My mother...

BLITZER: But when they came to Texas, were they legally documented, were they unlegally documented?

GONZALES: You know, it's unclear. It's unclear. And I've looked at this issue, I've talked to my parents about it, and it's just not clear.

But in any event, my mother had a second grade education -- my father had a second grade education, my mother had a sixth grade education. And my father worked construction.

And so for me, my life represents the American dream. There are so many wonderful opportunities in this country. And that's why you have such a pull for people to come into this country who simply want a better life for themselves and for their children.

Hmm, might need a higher fence.

The Mexican Navy intends to buy Russian SU-27 fighter aircraft, Undersecretary of the Mexican Navy Admiral Armando Sanchez Moreno told the Mexican newspaper El Universal.

The Mexican Navy also considered bids submitted by Russia and Sweden and decided to choose Russia's SU-27 fighters, Moreno said, according to the paper.

The Mexican Navy plans to set up an air defense unit using SU-27 aircraft, Moreno said. Ivan Goncharenko, deputy general director of Russia’s government-owned military export company Rosoboronexport, confirmed Thursday talks with Mexico about the SU-27 purchase. He did not elaborate.

SU-27 fighters are produced by Russia's Sukhoi aircraft maker.

Hmmm. Where do you think we will find cheap labor to build the fence?

Put up many more protective fences--this, quotas, tariffs and other populist barriers to free trade--and we'll all be working cheap.

Most thoughts taken too far become absurd (but what am I really refering to?).

It's just I think we're shooting ourselves in the foot.

the fences will divert them to other points, making them easier to catch. (I guess)
but putting them back across the line won't work unless they do it the way they did it in the 50s when they transported them into deep southern Mexico (making the walk back a lot longer)
Mexico, however is probably balking at that, refusing persmission, because Mexico is dumping her peasants on us, happy to get rid of the surplus bodies.
we could draft the men and send them to iraq. (not really, but it's a tempting thought)

the problem as I see it is MUCH bigger than we think.
it's not just mexicans coming. it's indians, chinese, africans, arabs, russians, ukranians, you name it, they're coming.... here and to Europe and Gt. Britain and Australia... to the free (and prosperous) world.
Looking for a better life.

And it's not something you can STOP unless you're willing to shoot them, and I'm not.

The question is how to survive the inundation?

Mexico has militarized their Southern border to keep out the folks they don't want from Honduras etc but of course it is wrong for us to do the same. The 320 Billion we have already spent on Iraq would have gone a long way towards securing our borders. We are spending the BIG BUCKS in Iraq so there just isn't enough left in the "pie" to deal with the current Southern Invasion. So what we get is a token response that makes no one happy, except maybe the "coyotes."

Why not put about 50,000 troops on the border. If we keep them out in the first place then we won't have to worry about what to do with them when they get caught over here.

The main purpose of a central government is to "provide for the common defense" and that isn't happening......
