Teryt "Oh, I already think it's something, it's you that don't." Sorry, I am arguing a political and scientific point, not a personal belief. "And we've already established that it doesn't seem to fit the current definition of science, so it's no wonder it got rejected." Exactly. So why would you advocate teaching it in a science classroom? "I'm just waiting for ID researchers to see if they can formulate their studies into something that the metaphysicals can more readily accept." Metaphysicals? You mean the Metaphysical Poets? Like John Donne? "Then again, IDers are waiting for the evolutionists missing link." Because IDers, er, Creationists, keep inventing new ones each time one's found. "Too bad about Neanderthal DNA not matching up with human DNA, because that would have shown something in the missing link area. But Neanderthals being a seperate species actually goes towards the Gap Theory." Could you put some substance behind that claim? Help to know what you mean. |

I just heard on the news today (NPR), that approximately 70% of kids entering the ninth grade will go on to get a regular high school diploma. This includes roughly 75% of whites, 50% of blacks and 55% of hispanics. Intelligent design may be a dumbing down. But, I think we got a whole more educational and social problems than ID. Things like the motivation to learn, the ambition and self discipline to succeed, poverty and poor parenting are the biggies in the dumbing down of america. Last weekend I watched the National Geographic quiz championships. I don't know the age limit, but the contestants were 10 to 14 years old. The majority of the finalists were kids with appearance and family names that would lead you to conclude their roots were from the Indian subcontinent, with a couple of caucasions sprinkled in. What conclusion can be drawn from that? My guess would be that some ethnic/racial groups see education as the best way to succeed in life. And, they probably are right. I also noted that several of the finalists were "home schooled". IMO, the biggest dumbing down of america will occur from allowing massive immigration of ethnic groups that don't have those values, and subsidizing those ethnic and racial groups that either can not or do not have the motivation to excell academically. |

Oh, I agree, this is just one example of special-interest dumbing down of our education system. Perhaps the solution is government getting out of the education business altogether. |

Amen to that - no matter how hard they try to fix it, it's just putting infected hands in the patient. |

But, then, how will the religious right spread the word? Think of it. No more public school. Then no more creationism vs evolution--government can't tell a private school what to teach. And no more school prayer controversies. And no more Pledge controversies. No more sex ed issues. Just like the abortion issue and gay marriage issue, if the federal government got out of the way, it would be left to local people. The entire religious revival of the last decades would fade away. Like proponents of ID, not for something, just against. |

Many of the major universities were forced to develop new standards as to what courses applicants had studied, and more importantly, what they understood about the world. These new standards also accommodate students who had been home-schooled. The University of California at Berkely was alarmed that many incoming students were coming from school systems that followed the model that W set up in Texas, which was teaching students to pass the tests, rather than teaching them to understand concepts. SAT exams are now less important. A major university is multi-cultural. A student that considers Muslims, Budhist, Hindis, Jews, et. al., as stupid, would injure the educational process of students who actually think, and would only cause the students to isolate themselves. When I was a guest lecturer at a community college (it is what I do for a break from my normal work), I noticed that the students did not socialize. At lunch time, all of the black folks sat together, for example. The Chinese students did not sit with the Japanese or Vietnamese students. The walls for each of these cliques were very high. I got my lunch and sat down with the Southern Baptist clique. I said, "hi guys, how is going today." Stares. Nothing but stares for a long time. Uh oh. Finally, one student spoke up. "What you said today in class, about these different religions is heresy and you will go to hell for it. How dare you compare put Christianity into the catagory of religions? Christianity is not a 'religion' it is simply the truth." Then they all got up and walked away from the table. I ate my lunch at the Hindi table. They actually asked questions, and it was far more condusive to good digestion. I asked questions too. Every 4,300,000 years Shiva (the part of god that is the destroyer) wipes the earth clean of all humans. Then Brahma, the creator, begins anew, and Vishnu (the preserver) helps mankind deal with life. How could life do what it does without evolution? If you accept the view of many of the religions of the world? |

Teryt, I see how you like to personalize discussion of politics, but it's just ideas and opinions. Now what ideas were skewed? |

Chris, guess what CD I plugged in in the mh tonight. I had to wait until it was late at night, of course. So, Chris, which is closer to reality, Firesign Theater or a White House press conference? |

Or this forum? It's all reality. Except the parts we close our eyes to, and the parts we make up out of whole cloth, like in your lunchroom example. |
