Thanks for the well-wishes, all.

After 38 years with Mother Bell and 41 years if you count my 3 years in the Army, I'm too tired right now to dance a jig!

BellSouth made "an offer we couldn't refuse" and, so, didn't. 1500 managers will be off the payroll on close of business Monday, May 15th. My boss expects those of us accepting the offer to come in to work on Monday, but I doubt much will be accomplished. I'll go in, hang around for a couple hours and then head home.

What am I going to do? There are a million photographs I want to take and I've got tons of Photoshop material to learn. Bought a 48 CD set on classical music appreciation and there is a new moon (with attendant dark skies) every month. Heading to the Nebraska Star Party in July and the wife and I have trips planned that don't involve astronomy.

I can't wait!

:faint: work is so busy..so much to do..tons of messages and emails to answer..

I sure got lot's of welcome back hugs. The boss keeps checking on me to make sure I am ok. I can leave anytime I want to.

I am tired, but I will stay for my day I hope. Bed early though..

Oh and they were nasty to me. They had the Edmonton Oilers on my desk top as they beat my Red Wings ... :fryingpan:

Eric;

Good Grief!! 38 years. I would have jumped at the offer too. Well, you're due. Hope you have a long and happy 'tiredment.

Rick; I marvel at your energy. We use to live in a "handyman's dream". One day, I had just finished a big project, and was looking forward to some fishing when Peggy came around the corner with her discovery that another "project" had pre-empted my fishing. I just said that's it, we are dumping this place, I am retiring, and then I am gonna have a beer and go fishing. And I did.

Just don't think I would have what it takes to do what you are doing. No more ambition. Hell, if it weren't for Peggy mixing the margaritas, I couldn't get drunk. Too much effort going back and forth to the fridge.

Well, I have made the huge pan of chicken Parmesan for the rally; soon it'll join the chocolate fudge cake in the freezer.

My daughter Jennifer and granddaughter Katie are in the living room with Katie's counselor. They needed a place to meet that was halfway for them both, and this is logical. K has been in detention for three years; finally it looks as if we are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. She was a habitual runaway, is now almost 16, and I cannot tell you how much better she looks. She's lost the lip ring and that awful Goth look with the black makeup. Her hair is clean and her face shines. She is such an extremely bright girl but suffers bad depressions.

I hear laughter, so maybe things are ending on a happy note. :)

Time to go get Mom's Sherry. None for me; I am not drinking right now....I'll make it through the rally somehow.... :faint:

Good afternoon. I wish I could say that the weather here was as good as it seems to be elsewhere in this community, but it is not. It is 71°F here but there are some thunderboomers to keep me on my toes. Come to think of it, they keep Orson on my toes too. He doesn't like them much.

I've lost track of who is where. Orson and I took a hike -- call it a mini-vacation. I strapped on his backpack and loaded it with his water and food (and baggies). I strapped on mine and off we went down a trail. We were gone for a little more than 3 days. It was very refreshing, and very exhausting. Some large fish bothered Orson in a lake and we had fresh fish that night. He didn't mean to kill it, but only to stop it from sucking on his leg. But when he picked it up and threw it, it did not recover. I swam out and retrieved it. Orson was intent on getting his beloved frisbee. But gosh golly was that good over the campfire in the middle of nowhere.

Eric, only you can decide what you want to do, and when to do it. I had many friends at Bell Labs that just quit when they tried to fold them into the baby bells, years ago. I have friends that were at AT&T who quit when one of the babies (SBC) bought the parent. Is that any way to treat your mother?

Please pass on your early experiences with PhotoShop, I would be very interested to hear them.

Okay, I need to fix lunch of some sort and then back to work. Our little hike taught me something, though. I am a few years overdue for a vacation. Stop laughing, it isn't polite. I am now 25 years into the program that would have me retire 5 months ago. I love my work and my life, in general, and have no intention of retiring right now. I'm having too much fun meeting the technological challenges of some of these projects. But I just need to spend a little more time away from work.

I will have that opportunity next month. I will be giving a series of guest lectures at colleges near San Francisco Bay. The first one will be on the topic of philosophy. It is based on a paper I once wrote (go find it). "The relationships between the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead (Bertrand Russell's mentor), the Theravada Buddhist doctrine of the Jeweled Net of Indra, and Quantum Physics". Bring your thinking caps. The second is also in philosophy but is an evening course. "What is really going on in the TV show Lost? A philosophical dissection." Then there are a couple of quantum physics lectures. Perhaps you would prefer the cultural anthropology lecture on why the tragedy of Darfur happened? This one was requested by an old friend who spent years in Afghanistan before being expelled by his own wife, who was with the "Foreign Service". I wrap it up with lectures on bi-polar disorder and how to recognize it, and the dangers of ADHD over-diagnosis and how to control it.

Believe it or not, that will be relaxing to me. These things happen over the course of a month. I have a great place to park in the tall redwoods, Orson can come with me everywhere, and I do not need to imagine a machine with xx arms doing xx parts per minute. All I have to do is talk to students and visiting folk.

Any of you in the area, I'd love to see you. I'll even pay for the stupidly expensive coffee afterwards so we can discuss. You have your choice of venues. There is either the Starbucks on campus, the one across the street, or this little place I know.

I doubt that you can get into the first one, since they have moved it twice to larger spaces, and are still full. Who would you guess would be picketing such an idea? This is really an obscure venue. Therevada Buddhist? nope. Quantum physics guys will run to their calculators. Who do you expect to be outraged? It is the fundie Christians that have nothing to do with any of my topics, that they are worried about. Excuse me? Metal detectors at the door? No. I only meant to discuss concepts. I made no attacks on anyone.

When did asking questions become a crime to some special interest groups?

Anyhow, I hope you have a great day. And to those nasty snoops that try to change what we are allowed to say, Come Find Me! I have never said anything against the US, while I have questioned the competency of some of its leaders. I did my service in the place I will never name, but everyone knows. My friends were killed on the left of my and to the right of me. For some strange reason I was not killed too. To those that question my patriotism, just look at my journals at the time. I'm sure that Homeland Security already has. Why are they interested in me?

There goes another lightning strike. I need to call it in. I am on private land, far deeper than I could go in a National Forest. I carry this letter that basically says I am okay and to grant me access to any lands the corporation owns. I did not just ask for this letter, I had to earn it. Currently, I am on Weyerhauser property, far away from where they are logging. We have a fire here that is too big for the extinguisher units (2) in my mh.

Cell service does not cut it. Ham radio does, and via phone patch, I explained it to the forest manager. Have you ever been sitting outside when a very large plane came in just over the tree tops? Orson jumped into my lap to be cuddled. Now, I ask you, are you ready for a 100lb dog launching himself into your lap? Oh, let me tell you that this is an experience you need to do before having children, LOL Okay, let me just say that it has it has been a strenuous time, and we both survived and still love each other.

It was a slow day for us, which meant I had plenty of time to get the rear view mirror back on the windshield. I took it to the dealer and went to my service writer showed him the mirror and told him, "Cheryl thinks it is unreasonable to expect her to hold this up on the windshield while I drive." He sent me back to my tech who took the mirror and headed for the car while instructing me to go to parts and get the special adhesive. Robbi, the parts girl, got the glue for me and I was off to the truck where the tech had scraped away the old glue. Ten minutes later I was on my way; total cost $6. Nice people at the dealership. A few deliveries later it was time to head home.
We had pizza for dinner with my sister at Leonardo's and now home for the evening. Tomorrow and Wednesday are in class; continuing education in case I ever hit my head hard enough to go back the public accounting. Great subjects: Managing and Resolving an IRS audit, and Forensic Accounting; sorry you can't all be there. :floorrollin: Oh wait, Chrissy could come along. I'll be happy to give anyone interested a full report. :fryingpan:

We/Carolina Hurricanes are still on road to Stanley Cup so lots of excitement in house and town. Beat NJ Devils 6-0 Saturday so you know they are coming back super strong tonight. JG, Ed and friend with tickets on the glass are at game.

I am warm, lots of rain and cool weather recently. Have 3 out of 4 pets in bed with me, I am eating leftovers and watching the game :)

Karen,
Any way you can do half days for the rest of the week? Bring work home if you need to, but at least you can get comfy and quiet while you do it.
