Good morning, all! Another lovely day down here.

I have some nice NY Jewish rye if anyone wants toast. Also English muffins and cinnamon raisin bagels - have cream cheese too :) Just yell.

No big plans today - just hanging out and making our weekly phone calls to the kids.

Enjoy whatever you are doing and have a day :)

Good Morning all. This is the second morning Frank and I sat on the porch and had our coffee. A beautiful, cool, sunny morning, the sound of the birds chirping was glorious.

Patti, I'll spoil you again, need to go to the supermarket and get the ingredients to bake all the goodies I posted. :)

Thanks all for understanding me, I'm trying to keep good thoughts and not worry.
I haven't posted too much but know I appreciate all you say to me. I'm going to a park this morning with my daughter Jacque and the beast (Remington).

Pat, I'm looking forward to Tuesday.

Have a wonderful Saturday...........

'morning folks!

It's still cold and cloudy here, but a warming trend is beginning: 50+ by Wednesday--that will take care of the last of the snow. I spoke to the roofer today, instead of his machine--figured I catch him *early* on a Saturday! Told him the fix needs to get done before rainy season begins. He was working in the opposite direction this morning, but says, "this afternoon, or tomorrow, if you don't mind Sunday.". I certainly don't mind Sunday--at this point, I wouldn't mind 2 a.m.

Went shopping unexpectedly yestay and couldn't resist some corned beef and cabbage. Actually, I bought enough to make it twice--reuse the liquid from the first batch. Forgot Irish soda bread, tho, so had to get out the bread machine...I feel like Julia Child (this is getting rediculous). Today I will get caught up on everything else...right after I read the March news letter.

Yawl have a good day...

John

As long as you don't look like her, John...and if you cook like her, I'll be right over! She was my hero. She, and MFK Fischer.

I have been up since 6 as usual (waiting for someone else to start the thread). Thanks, Patticake! Took Mom to the hairdresser for her cut; she's had the same woman doing it for her for 15 years and the price just went from $15 to $23. She was so upset, you'd think all her savings had gone down the tubes....the same woman charges me $35 for a cut (so I don't go to her anymore). Mom doesn't realize what a break she is getting. She is still sulking. The worst part is, by the time she needs a cut again, she'll have forgotten all about this and we'll have to go through the same thing, starting with when they first moved here in 1953 and a haircut cost $5. :faint:

Sorry, I am venting... :banghead: Chrissy, if you know a good one down in Gainesville who will do a cut for under $25, I'll get one there. Getting shaggy again...I heard Fantastic Sam's does a good job, for $11?

My hairdresser at home only cost $15.00.......it was $10 until a year or so ago. Perms, $35.00........Of course she is a one woman shop, and certainly doesn't need the money. :floorrollin: :floorrollin: :floorrollin: Been going to her for about 27 years. :faint:

You had *me* drooling for a T-bone first thing this morning! I was ready to leave for Connecticut (uninvited? yeah, so what, it involves food), but I have too much stuff to catch up on.

And now I will get out of the way of the hairdresser discussion....

T-bone can't hold a candle to a porterhouse. Ribeye is good but no bone! I am part cavegirl; I love to gnaw the bone.

In any case, for heaven's sake don't marinate the poor things in salty sauces like Worcestershire before cooking them! The salt in the sauces will draw the juices out, and the whole thing will taste like sauce, not beef. My first MIL, a meek, sweet and God-fearing soul if ever there was one, could not, bless her heart, cook meat worth a damn. She had the steaks cut quite thin, doused them with W sauce and ran them under the broiler of her 1950's electric range, turning them once. I can see them now, emerging from the broiler, flabby, wet, and gray. Just like chewing a wet blanket soaked in Worcestershire.

John, just let me know a day or so in advance. I will go down to the Country Market and get the finest porterhouse you ever set a tooth into; cut 1 1/2 to 2" thick, dry-aged, a fresh red with a thin rind of white fat. Standing in front of the meat cases, I am like a bird mesmerized by a snake.... :floorrollin:

Nothing should touch the meat but the merest wisp of melted butter with fresh garlic squeezed into it. Put it on a red-hot grill, turn after five to eight minutes and brown the other side, and keep turning and basting with the garlic butter until it begins to resist the pressure of a fork and the rich aroma of grilled steak permeates the neighborhood (part of the mystique is driving your neighbors crazy).

Bear it proudly into the house and let it rest on a hot platter, tented with foil, until the rest of the meal is on the table. Cut the rosy slices thick and lay them on the plates with garlic mashed potatoes and home-grown green beans. That is the best meal man can hope for in this world.
