How many have seen this astonishing 1974 movie about Reconstruction? If you haven't, waste no time in finding a copy!

It was shown yesterday on a PBS channel and I had to watch it to the very end. It is humbling and wrenching, even though I know the facts, to see what these people have gone through for so many decades, even hundreds of years.

Have they accomplished what they wanted to? I think not. Hate is still alive and well in too many places.

It defined a lot of questions for me, that I have thought of rarely, living as I have in a largely white world. I just couldn't stop thinking about all those confrontations, just for the sake of being allowed to live like human beings. It made me ashamed for a lot of the white race.

I guess what I don't understand is, does a person have to follow the teachings of his parents and his peers in matters of prejudice? If he does, is it his fault? or the fault of his parents?

It follows that if the latter is true, then the first is also, and vice versa. But what of the ones who break out of the mold to fight against prejudice (whether they are black, or white)? Why can't everyone see what they see?
