"his face shot off", "birds they hold in cages"?

Appears some folks read a lot more in a news item than what is reported.

Does anyone else see any irony in a Vice-President to a President Bush shooting QUAIL?

That was a good one...

Obviously not many quail hunters here. The fault was not with Cheney provided he maintained his line. It was the guy who got shot that was in a position he should not have been.

There are rules to quail hunting and etiquette and this guy should have announced himself if he came into the area Cheney had to shoot in. Looking down the barrel of a shotgun at a bird you don't have to look anywhere else. You only have to observe the proper turn of the waist.

Now is Cheney moved too far then he would be at fault but reports have said this person moved into his firing zone and did not announce himself. Once you shoulder the shotgun everyone better stay out of that zone. But then I'm sure they were using 7 1/2 or 8 shot and if he was 25 yards away then he's just shot up a little.

I wonder if he got the bird?

What's your reaction to Vice President Cheney shooting a fellow hunter?
Cheney must resign immediately, he's unfit for office
The incident shows guns don't shoot people, vice presidents do
More evidence guns need to be banned in America
Hunting can be dangerous, and accidents happen
Thank goodness the man was not hurt more seriously or killed, it would have been a major tragedy
Media will blow this out of proportion purposefully to make Cheney look bad
I feel bad for the victim and Cheney, but I can't wait to hear the jokes
I stand by Dick Cheney, who is a great vice president
I still would rather go hunting with Cheney than Bill or Hillary Clinton any day of the week

Dick Cheney taunts police from window.

by Dylan Jameson

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (PoopyCaca.com) - Vice President Dick Cheney remains holed up in a Texas hunting lodge after shooting a 78-year-old man, keeping police at bay by randomly firing over their heads.

Initial reports indicated Cheney had accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, but when police arrived at the lodge, Cheney "went wild," according to Butch Anderson, a deputy sheriff who was among the first on the scene.

"Mr. Cheney started screaming that he wouldn't be taken alive," Anderson said. "He said he got 'a taste of human blood' and he liked it. That's when he started firing at us and we set up a perimeter around the lodge."

From outside the lodge, Cheney, apparently drunk, could be heard singing along to old Johnny Cash albums, Anderson said.

Cheney shows off his favorite "fishin' gun."

Cheney's hunting partner, Harry Whittington, 78, a lawyer from Austin, was "alert and doing fine" after being sprayed with shotgun pellets in the face, neck and chest at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.

Armstrong said Cheney appeared to be turning to shoot a bird when he instead shot Whittington. She said Whittington was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital by ambulance.

"At first I thought it was an accident, but when I looked at Dick he was smiling that sort of weird, crooked smile," Armstrong said. "He kinda' reminded me of Jack Nicholson in The Shining. We just got out of there real quick."

Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, continued to call the shooting "an unfortunate accident" and refused to comment on the reported stand-off with police.

"Mr. Whittington is very bird-like in his appearance," Mc Bride explained. "It is easy to see how the vice president could have mistaken him for a quail."

I've been quail hunting a lot, Cal. One thing I learned when I was, oh, about eight years old: Never, ever, turn around and fire behind you without checking to make sure no one is there. Better to let a bird get away than to shoot a person.

Yeah, the guy should have announced himself, but he was behind the hunting party. There is no excuse for Cheney shooting first and asking questions later, but that does seem his style.

Remind me to never go hunting with you, Cal.

From the time I started hunting quail with my father at the age of about 12, it was drummed into me that it was the responsibility of every hunter to know the whereabouts of every other hunter in the party. If one was not certain of where everyone was, one simply passed up the shot. This is the first I have heard of the "announce yourself" rule or practice.

I don't know what is worse--shooting a campaign donor or killing the mate of a goose with children like Sen. Kerry did :)

I think he already is an appointee.  Not sure but seem to remember that being mentioned when this was first reported on Fox.

One thing for sure, Whittington isn't a very good quail hunter.

Nope, he's a better target.

When tricky Dick asked Whittington to go quail hunting, he mistakenly though they were going to hunt up Dan.

Why did "Old Bird Shot" wait more then 24 hours before reporting the accident to the police? Maybe he wanted to consult with "Splash" first.

Yeah, we got a lot of people doing hard time that tried using that defense. :fryingpan:

Whittington got the first bird; maybe Cheney was jealous. :floorrollin: I never liked hunting quail with more than one other person, three was asking for trouble. The birds don't seem to know where the lines are that we draw for safety and cross them at will. Whittington would come under the heading of colateral damage. ;) It wasn't like he just showed up for gosh sakes; they had just been hunting together a few minutes earlier; maybe Cheney really does have a bad memory. :spin:

sounds like the media is trying to spin this hunting accident into some kind of scandal. I wonder how many safety conscious hunters have had hunting accidents that was embarrassing and did not run to the media immediately to high light their embarassment? Especially for quail that make it difficult to aim, lead and shoot because of their quick and random flights. I guess the Bush/Cheney haters are going to have fun at Cheney's expense.

They could be...
Too bad for Cheney; as you say, accidents can happen and most people are lucky enough not to be public figures so their mistakes don't end up as national news. I'm sure he felt very bad about it on a personal level and Whittington will have some great fun telling friends how the vice president shot him. Glad no one was seriously hurt or we couldn't poke fun. :pistols:
