Chapter 1 - The Beginning

(Ulrich, Odd, Jeremie, Aelita, and Yumi are all the same classes and grade.)

Ulrich, Odd, Aelita, Jeremie, and Yumi are sitting in class trying their best to listen and concentrate. None of the teens managed this. Even Jeremie couldn't concentrate. Yumi was daydreaming about Ulrich, Ulrich was daydreaming about Yumi, Jeremie was trying to figure out how to free her from Xana, Aelita was thinking about Jeremie, and Odd slept.

BRRRRIIIIINNGGG!!!!

Everyone jumped and stirred except Odd, who let off a particularly loud snore. Sissi snickered and stalked out of the classroom.

"Dinner!" Ulrich yelled into Odd's ear.

Odd woke up and took off for the cafeteria, paying no heed to a startled Yumi, who fell in her hurry to get out of Odd's way.

"ODD!" Ulrich shouted, as he helped Yumi up.

"He really likes food way too much. I wonder what he would do if the world ran out of food. He'd die then." Yumi said, matter-of-factly.

"Yup, he'd die." Replied Aelita as she yawned.

"Let's get to the cafeteria before Odd eats all the food." Joked Ulrich.

Ulrich led the way to the cafeteria. When they got there they discovered that Odd had already gone through the line and gotten his food. The other three lined up with their plates as Yumi waited with Odd at the table. Ulrich was first to sit down after getting his plate. Odd had already made it through most of his plate and was getting ready for his second plate.

"Ulrich, how do you handle Odd?" Yumi said, joking about Odd's appetite.

"Beats me. I guess you get used to it after knowing him for so long. I know I thought it was amazing as first, and now, it is just regular. It doesn't really matter much to me." Ulrich answered truthfully.

Aelita and Jeremie sat down. Odd stood up and went for his seconds.

"It is going to take me awhile to get used to how much Odd eats." Aelita Stated.

Jeremie and Ulrich sat there eating and listening to Aelita and Yumi chat as Odd shoveled food into his face.Yumi glanced out the window. Night was falling.

"Well, I need to get home guys. I'll see you all tommorrow. Night." Yumi said and walked out of the cafeteria. She walked home.

Shortly after Yumi left, the rest of the group departed to their dorms.

With Yumi

Yumi was laying on her bed. She was lying on her back with her comfortor was pulled up to her shoulders. Two photos lay on her stomach facedown. Yumi picked up the larger of the two pictures. It was one of her and the rest of the group together. They had been at the park the day that this picture had been taking. Odd stood in the middle, holding Kiwi. Aelita stood on the left side of Odd. Jeremie stood next to Aelita. Yumi stood on the right side of Odd. Ulrich stood next to Yumi. Packed down snow and snow covered trees surrounded them. At the time that this picture had been taken, they had all been the best of friends. Now, they had drifted and were forgetting about what good times they had enjoyed. Yumi thought about the time that this picture had been taken.

*Flashback*

Kiwi was bounding around, happy. Odd held a frisbee in one hand and ran after his dog. They were at the park. The ground was covered in freshly fallen snow from the previous night. Yumi and Ulrich talked quietly while watching Odd play with Kiwi. Jeremie sat with his laptop in his lap listening to Aelita chatter happily. Odd walked over to them with Kiwi trotting happily behind.

"Come play a game of frisbee with Kiwi and me." Odd said.
"Sure, Odd." Ulrich agreed.

Jeremie set his laptop down on the bench. All five of them took up various positions around the park. Odd carried the frisbee and threw it to Ulrich who caught it and threw it to Yumi who threw it to Aelita who threw it to Jeremie and then threw it back to Odd, all the while with Kiwi chasing it along the ground. Odd threw it to Aelita and it missed. Her and Kiwi chased the frisbee....

*End Of Flashback*

Yumi blinked and realized that tears were threatening to fall. She scolded herself for crying and wiped her arm across her eyes.

With Ulrich

Ulrich lay on his back with his arm behind his head. He stared up at the ceiling blankly, wondering what was keeping him from sleeping. He realized that the usual snoring from Odd was missing. He heard a small whimper and guessed that Odd was crying. He thought about why and involuntarily had a flashback of one of the worst days of his friend's life.

With Odd

Tears drenched Odd's face and pillow. Odd sniffed and swiped angrily at his eyes, wiping away the tears that blinded him and soaked his pillow and face. The memory played over and over again in his mind, biting at him, bringing pain where it was unneeded.

Odd carried the frisbee and threw it to Ulrich who caught it and threw it to Yumi who threw it to Aelita who threw it to Jeremie and then threw it back to Odd, all the while with Kiwi chasing it along the ground. Odd threw it to Aelita and it missed. Her and Kiwi chased the frisbee. It landed on the ground and Kiwi bounded after it. Aelita stopped to watch Kiwi get the frisbee. Kiwi tried to stop running next to the frisbee and slid a couple of feet.

On the road, a semi tried to switch lanes. A little red car sped up. In mid switch, the semi swerved back into its lane and slid into the third lane on its right. Another truck swerved to miss the semi. It slid on the ice, sending it sliding off of the road. It nearly clipped Aelita but she jumped out of the way just in time. Kiwi, however, was not so lucky. He got hit head on. Odd screamed as the truck came to a stop and ran across the park to his dog. He slid to a stop and gathered the injured pet into his arms, rocking back and forth and crying. The driver got out and walked over.

"Sorry kid, is the dog okay? Here, climb into the truck with him and I'll take all of you to the vet. I'll pay for it." Said the driver.

So the group climbed into the pickup truck and left the wreck behind as they sped off to the animal clinic. It was almost twenty minutes before they got there. Kiwi was treated as an emergency case and was immediately admitted to be tended to. The veterinarian did a thorough check-up on Kiwi, checking for internal bleeding, broken ribs, broke bones, physical damage, and internal damage. The veterinarian found severe internal damage and ruled that with or without surgery, Kiwi was not going to make it and that Odd had a choice: Let the dog die slowly and painfully or put him out of his misery and put him down.

"I don't want him to suffer, and as much as I love Kiwi, I have to take the faster approach and have him put to sleep." Odd said with a waver in his voice. He gulped and told the doctor his decision.

All five teenagers watched silently as the veterinarian expertly slid the hypodermic needle into Kiwi and administered the drug that would make Kiwi immobile forever. Odd held his dog. He felt Kiwi go stiff and stop breathing. Odd choked out "Kiwi!" before tears overtook him and he could no longer speak. The rest of the group cried silently. Kiwi had been with them for a long time and they were going to miss the little dog's high-pitched bark. Odd handed the dog over and the veterinarian moved Kiwi out of sight. One by one, they filed silently out of the doctor office and met up outside.

They politely turned down the man's offer to drive them to the school and walked.

*End Of Flashback*

Odd slowly slid off into a very restless sleep, having nightmares, crying out regularly, and waking up every few hours.

Back To Yumi

Yumi sniffed again and put the picture that she was holding back onto the bedside table. She picked up the other picture. This one was in a golden inlayed frame. In each of the corners was a single word. In the top-right was Love. In the bottom-right was Lust. In the bottom-left was Care. In the top-left was Fight. She had had this frame specially made for reasons of her own. In it was a picture of her and Ulrich. Ulrich had his arm draped around her waist. Yumi leaned into Ulrich's embrace. She remembered how close they had been when the picture had been taken and she knew how much they had drifted since. She wanted that warmth back.
