Blue:
Princess Amaila
A Simon Hills Novel

ONE
A young blond stared at the water below him. His father’s yacht wasn’t a vessel he particularly loved. Nor did he love deep water. Being unable to swim, he was never too fond of the ocean. However his parents were the exact opposite. He saw them as walking whales, who could talk. With a sigh, he turned away and started for the cabin. His brothers along with his parents were all asleep, though Miles had awoken early.

The sound of a large object lifting from the water caught his attention. He stopped cold and turned in the direction of the noise, just in time to see a black blur slam into him. They were both carried straight off the yacht and into the cold Atlantic waters below. One big splash and Miles was sure he’d drown.
* * *

Miles’ vision slowly blurred back to him. He could see the surface far above and the sound of moving water filled his ears. The occasional cry of a whale could be heard, but nothing much else.

He immediately held what little breath he had and managed to turn himself right side up. He immediately landed on solid ground, to see a sight he never thought possible.

In front of him was a field of flowers, bursting in a rainbow of color. No flower was a like and no color was the same shade. Each waved with the small currents that moved his hair. The occasional tree dotted the field. All the beauty of the surface only underwater. He knew so, for even though he saw nothing but a blue sky an a bright sun above, everything had adopted a slight waver. Not only so, the near weightlessness of being under water, along with the wet feeling existed. He simply stared in awe at his surroundings, wondering how any of this could exist.

I must be dreaming…I’m still unconscious, right? How is any of this possible…? The questions ran through his head on a train. He knelt down and felt the grass beneath his feet. Real grass…and real dirt…how could this be? I’m getting a headache from all this. I can’t reach the surface without swimming, but I don’t know how to swim. And this is how it ends?

A hard force drove what little oxygen he had left, straight from his lungs. The air came out in a stream of tiny bubbles.

Trust me. Breathe, human. A male voice echoed in his mind. It’s deep, resounding speech repeating itself. You should be no stranger to Blue, yet you know nothing of it…perhaps the princess was mistaken.

Against his own will, Miles drew breath, to find that instead of water, fresh air came into his lungs. This sparked even more confusion. “This is so messed up. I guess I’ll just learn as I go…” he grumbled, taking notice of a small cabin in the distance of the field. It looked as if no one was currently in residence.

As he began walking, it was almost as if the water around him didn’t exist. Though he was constantly reminded it was there, by the wavering of his surroundings and the gentle wind-like currents that moved his clothes and hair. The more accustomed to the environment he became, the more signs of life he began to notice around him. A small farm behind the building. Other people picking flowers in the background. The faint outline of a city in the distance. The songs of birds. It was almost exactly as if being on the surface.

So how are you liking Blue now? a female voice echoed into his mind as a seemingly young killer whale swam over and followed by Miles’ side.

Miles did a double take at the orca swimming beside him. Proof he absolutely had to be underwater. “Shamu?” he exclaimed, stopping as the orca swam a circle before stopping in front of him.

Who? the voice asked.

Miles smiled and blinked, turning away. His way of figuring out he was talking to a big sea mammal. “No one important. By the way, my name’s Miles, what’s yours?” Not exactly the most keen way of introducing himself. The only reason he wasn’t having a meltdown about everything that was happening was simply because he saw this as a dream.

Amaila. the orca stated, slowly swimming off. I’ll see you later.

“Did I say something wrong?” Miles called after a Amaila, red with embarrassment.

No. I’m just late for a meeting…

Miles sighed, bubbles shooting from his mouth. “Okay, now what?” he asked himself. “It’s not like I know my way around. Well, adventurer’s rule number one; find out whatever you can…” With a breath, Miles started for the cabin nearby.

And you aren’t even going to chase after me? came Amaila’s voice as she nosed Miles in the back.

Of course, he nearly jumped straight out of his skin, before turning around. “You wanted me to follow you? And what about your meeting?” Miles questioned the orca, raising an eyebrow.

Okay, so I lied. When I heard you were the type for adventure I…

“You what? Wanted to drag me along on some crazy killer whale thing, right?” he crossed his arms. “Look, I’m more interested in getting home, you know, at Cape Cod? We‘ve gotta be near there, right?”

I know, I’m…the one who brought you down here in the first place. Sorry.

“Oh, so you’re the big fish that tackled me off my dad’s boat. Man, what next?” With that, Miles began walking away.

A bright flash of light ensued behind his back, casting a long shadow down the flower field. When the light faded a hand tapped Miles’ shoulder.

Once again, caught by surprise, he turned around, wondering what he’d see this time.

“Look, I was just bored, okay? I wanted someone to play with, so here we are now,” said a girl in an embroidered white dress.

Miles just remained silent, staring at the girl, who was most likely four years older. His stare blended into a scowl as he began to turn away.

“Wait! It just gets too boring around the castle--the guards don’t let me do anything fun!”

“Ha. So you decided to sneak out and abduct a playmate?”

“I can send you back to the surface if you want…I wasn’t thinking when I took you down here…I thought we could be friends.”

Miles sighed, turning back to the girl, who he figured was Amaila, due to the similarity in voice. “Listen, dolphin girl. I, unlike most human beings, am not susceptible to the guilt trick. Now just send me back to the shore.”

“You aren’t hurt in any way are you?”

“Well. Do you think I wouldn’t have a bruise if a most likely fifteen-foot multi-ton dolphin tackled me with enough force to carry us both off of a yacht?”

With a sigh, Amaila gave Miles a brown stone, with aquamarine insets. “Focus on any spot in the surface world you want to go and that’s where you’ll be…”

In seconds, Miles sent himself back home.
* * *

Miles sat on layer upon layer of towels on his living room couch, watching the TV. Everyone was in bed except for him. Thoughts of Amaila kept him up all night. He quickly glanced at the clock on the cable box. Five o’ clock in the morning. He sighed, glancing at the window as the sun rose. The sky was a bleached red and dim light poured through the window, lighting a square on the dark blue carpet.

He sighed, taking the odd stone from his pocket. “Focus on any spot on the surface you want to go and that’s where you’ll be…” he mumbled to himself, “I wonder if it works the other way around.”
* * *

In seconds Miles found himself, once again floating to the ground of the flower field. He took note of the ring of colored flowers he was standing in. Amaila was circling overhead.

Miles quickly took note of the black star on her underbelly, before walking a good distance away, also noticing the white circles on her sides. He thrust his hands into his pockets with a sigh. Why was he so eager to be back in Blue? It was almost as if something was drawing him down here.

You came back…why? Amaila asked, slowly touching down on the ground beside Miles. One big black eye fixed on him.

Miles sighed, seating himself on a nearby stump. “I dunno. Something just sort of made me want to come back. It’s like something about this world makes me feel happy. I mean it was really cool and all, how you turned from a killer whale to a human. I can breathe here. It seems like I could do back flips down. It‘s almost like living in a dream.” He smiled slowly, staring at the orange sky.

Well…maybe it’s the magic of the Zaishans that made you want to come back.

“Since when was there a such thing as magic?”

Since Zaishans discovered magic. That’s when, Miles. I can read your mind to the extent of knowing your desires. With a slight movement, sparkling dust blew from the tip of Amaila’s mouth and to Miles’ broken old wooden sword. It immediately changed into an actual blade, within a grand, purple sheath, covered in gold embroideries. You’ve always wanted a real sword and thus you have one.

Amaila gave off a small cry of amusement as Miles slid the silver blade out of its sheath and stared at it in amazement. The golden string that hung from the pommel of the leather-bound hilt, shined in the light of the now risen sun.

He glanced from the sword to Amaila, then back at the sword as he carefully sheathed it. Magic in real life? Something he never thought possible…until now.

Perhaps I could persuade Master Mage Jiuka to teach you a few tricks. Amaila said, slowly lifting herself from the ground and swimming off.

Miles shook himself out of his trance over his wooden sword magically becoming real and followed. “How can anything do magic? Science forbids--”

Amaila moved her body to collide with Miles. The boy, obviously being much smaller than the killer whale, was knocked over. Science? Sometimes science doesn’t explain everything, my small friend. The world is full of mysteries. You can’t believe everything that’s told to you.

“Well I’m one of those humans who’re overly realistic,” Miles said, standing up. “I’m not the one to be very used to living in what seems like a dream.”

You’ll get used to it soon. Besides, with that sword, your one of the Orca Knights--you’re one of us now, Milesson.

Miles tipped his head, slightly. A trio of bubbles burst from his mouth as he let off a loose breath. “A what?”

You’re an Orca Knight.

“Orca Knight? Yeah, that sure rolls off the tongue. Wouldn’t it sound better as The Orcan Knights?”

I didn’t name it, so don’t tell me that. Tell it to my father, but I doubt he’ll listen to a human. You’re welcome to try if the guards let you by.

“Never mind. Anything else you want to tell me? Or are you going to just leave now, like most other people do?” Miles crossed his arms. “That’s what people did when I first moved from Boston to…wherever I live in Cape Cod.”

No, of course not! In a bright flash of light, Amaila assumed human form. “A princess of my standing needs a loyal bodyguard at all times, right?” She hooked her arm around Miles’ right arm, dragging the poor, blank, blond away. “Besides, I want to show you something I saw when I was heading back to the castle.”

“Is that something dangerous?” Miles questioned unconfidently. Such close contact with a girl definitely rocked his boat. “Because I’m not really a good fighter…”

“Ah, don’t worry about it! You’re a level fifteen.”

Pure confusion spread throughout Miles’ mind, which was already filled to a bursting point. “Level fifteen? Now we’re in some sort of videogame?”

“No, it’s just a way of measuring someone’s strength in Blue,” Amaila said, taking Miles into a well lit cave.

“Yeah, that sounds a lot like a game. Am I in some CG game world? I’m not really one for Final Fantasy games…”

“Would you quit your complaining? It’s starting to get old.”

“And exactly what happened to you? One second, your some orca princess, next you’re dragging me through some cave. I mean what if something lives in here? And if it’s some sort of carnivorous monster? Are you even listening?” Miles unleashed his onslaught of questions as the two jogged down a tunnel and at last, came out into an incredibly large chamber.

Coral and seaweed grew all over. An old sunken ship sat in the middle, broken to several pieces. A door slammed shut behind them. Strange noises emanated from within the shipwreck. Almost as if someone was moaning in pain. Something was wrong about the whole scene in front of them.

“Amaila, what were you thinking dragging us in here, like that?” Miles shouted, taking a quick step forward. “You’d better know how we get out of here, because I don’t plan to be stuck in this place.”
