Everyone loves a good Role-Play. To keep the RPs good though, you’ll have to follow a few guidelines.

1. Remember one of the most essential elements of an RP: Plot.

Without a good plot, the RP is likely to fall to pieces before it even starts. There are a few levels of plot, though. There can be a clear plot that says “such-and-such will happen like this in this order.” Just don’t take a plot directly from a movie or video game. Imagination is key for an RP.

Plots can be vaguer than that, however. Sometimes it may be as simple as, “a bunch of Trainers are going to take on the bad guys!” This is fine, and leaves plenty of room for the members of the RP to define the specifics.

On the other hand, don’t be so vague as to say “well this is kinda like mystery dungeon. here’s the signup sheet.” You need more of a plot than that. Exceptions might be made if the RP is well done. An RP without a plot is not for beginners.

If you’ve come up with your own region/creatures/etc., it’s wise to add a few paragraphs or so as a background. Backgrounds are also helpful if the setting already exists, but is from a game/T.V. show/movie/etc. you think few people would know about, unless you’re trying for a specific audience.

2. The sign-up sheet

This will be the most important part of your RP, right after the plot. Sign up sheets let you know who you’re letting into your RP, or whether you should let them it at all.

Sign-up sheets require the following:

Name:
Age:
Description/personality:
Sample:

Name and age are fairly straight-forward.

The description includes what the person looks like, as well as what they’re like as a person.

The sample can vary from RP to RP. For example, it could be how a certain character came to a certain world, caught a certain Pokemon, learned a certain power/ability. This is perhaps the most important part of the sign up, as it shows the RPer’s abilities and is the best judge to who should be let into the RP.

That’s not to say that other sections can’t be added. Others could range from location to Pokemon, to whether or not they can do magic. It doesn’t matter. An optional section for random information that wasn’t covered in the RPs sign-up is also highly recommended.

3. Absences

If you know you’re going to be gone for a while, post the dates in the absences thread. This will prevent your fellow RPers from wondering where you are.

If someone in your RP has not posted, as a general guideline, you should not post more than two times until the missing person posts again. There’s nothing like being gone for a day or two and finding several pages to read through. If the person is/will be gone for more than a week, the limit is four posts per person.

4. Other rules

First off, NO GOD-MODDING! To “god-mod” is to make your character powerful to the point where they are nearly god-like by giving them special abilities or strong Pokemon or anything along those lines. There is no reason for that sort of thing. It makes things more interesting than just pulling out a ridiculous trump card like that.

Secondly, use proper grammar and spelling. An RP that goes along the lines of “dis is teh bestest rp evr!!111!!! ^_^” would immediately be locked. Put a little effort into your RP and avoid spelling/grammar errors as best you can, and don’t use smilies. If you’ve read most of the other rules of Calling all Writers, you would already know this. Smilies are only permitted in out -of character moments. Speaking of which:

Out-Of Character (OOC) posts are posts where you aren’t immediately adding to the
RP. These are right before or right before an update to the RP. These are perfectly fine, so long as they aren’t top heavy to the actual RP. It is not advisable to carry out long conversations with OOC posts. If you want to talk to a person that badly, just PM them.

Character control is okay in small amounts. Character controlling happens when you temporarily take control of another RPers character. The correct way would be to have them do a small action, or possibly say a short sentence. It is not okay to control someone else’s character to the point where you seem to have more control over that character than the RPer in charge of it. For example, you could drag your fellow RPers to a safe place or have one of them bend over to tie their shoe. You could not, however, make them say a paragraph or make them jump off a building. And it’s always best to post a warning in the form of a OOC post, just in case.

Non-Player Characters (NPCs) technically belong to no RPer in particular, and therefore can be controlled by anyone.

All posts must be at least 3 lines of text (not including OOC posts).

Finally, always, always, always follow the Calling all Writers rules.
