Chapter eight

Riveing awoke to find himself in a white room. He sat up, in the bed he was in and looked around. He had sensors all over his body, and there was a one way window on one side of the room. He gathered the wires that connected the sensors and with one tug, yanked them all off. He got out of the bed, to find himself in a white cloak, other than that, he didn’t have anything. “Who are you?” He asked, pointing to the mirror window. “I know you’re in there!” He shouted, glaring at the people he couldn’t see. A doctor came in, with a pair of shock paddles. Riveing quickly snatched the shock paddles and zapped the doctor and an alarm sounded, soon afterward. He got into the doctor’s clothes and took off, down a hall. ‘I have to find my pokemon!’ He thought, as he ran. ‘But…where do I start looking?’

“Attention all security personnel! Test subject number one-sixteen has escaped! He is disguised as a doctor, treat all male medical personnel with suspicion, until further notice!” The intercom blared.

“Hey you! Where are you running to?” A guard asked, coming around the bend, in front of him. Riveing used the shock paddles and zapped the guard, then stole their dart gun. He ran off, looking back, as he held the dart gun pointed up.

“The suspect is in sector F! Repeat, the suspect is in sector F! Do not allow him to retrieve his pokemon!” The intercom rang out, as he ran down a hall. He stopped at a fork and looked both ways.

‘This way first!’ He shouted in his mind as he ran down the hall to the left. He quickly came upon yet another fork. He went right and into a room. His belt, along with all the keys and his pokeballs were on a desk. He was about to run over and grab the belt, when he stopped himself and looked around. ‘This seems too easy…’ He thought as he looked around. He could see a small shine along the floor, stretching to the ceiling, then to the belt. There was another invisible thread weaving around a few inches from the floor. He carefully stepped around and grabbed his belt, jumping toward the door at the same time. He tackled it open, hitting a guard, as he put on his belt. He shot the guard with a dart, to make sure they stayed down for a while, then ran off.

“All security personnel, the suspect has retrieved his pokemon and is now extremely dangerous! Exercise extreme caution!” The lady on the intercom shouted. Riveing doubled the pace in which he ran. when he made it through the halls, into the field outside the large facility, he looked back, to recognize the place from his childhood.

“Bring back memories?” A familiar voice asked. Riveing turned to it.

“Shove it, Jason!” He shouted angrily, as he turned to Jason, who was ready for a battle. “I don’t have time for you!” He added.

“No way! This ends here! You ran away last time! Not only that, you beat Hiroki! I’m not letting you get any farther than three keys! I’m collecting them for reasons I’ll never tell!” Jason shouted, giving Riveing the finger.

“Oh, that’s it! You’re on!” Riveing yelled, grabbing Charizard’s pokeball. “You killed Likeria and I’m not letting you get away with it! You bastard! If there’s one thing I do, it’s going to be getting back at you!” He shouted, throwing the pokeball. Jason threw his.

“Go, Scyther! Use fury swipes!” Jason shouted, as Scyther came out of the pokeball. It instantly leapt forward.

“Charizard, use crystal shot at the sky, then dodge the attack!” Riveing shouted and Charizard sent a shower of crystal into the air, then moved out of Scyther’s way.

“Use cut!” Jason shouted and Scyther came for another round, with one of it’s bladed forearms ready to take a swing at Charizard.

“Now, use flamethrower!” Riveing shouted and Charizard turned to Scyther. As Scyther drew nearer, Charizard sent a pillar of fire it’s way. The attack was deflected by Scyther’s blades. “Flame tail!” Riveing shouted and Charizard whipped it’s tail through the air, with such speed, that it left a line of fire in the path it’s tail had taken. Scyther leapt over the fire and came down on Charizard. “Okay, Charizard! Grab Scyther and throw it into the air!” Riveing shouted and Charizard quickly grabbed Scyther and threw it toward the sky. Suddenly, all the crystal Charizard had sent up came back down, knocking Scyther back to the ground.

“You can do it! Quick attack!” Jason yelled and Scyther quickly leapt to it’s feet and smashed into Charizard, head on. “Now use cut again!” Jason shouted and Scyther swung it’s forearm, leaving a long scratch across Charizard’s chest.

“Hang in just a little longer! Use flamethrower!” Riveing shouted and Charizard let loose a large pillar of flames, but it split into four separate streams of lave and hit Scyther from behind. ‘Talk about unexpected.’ Riveing thought, this time, not being surprised by the new attack. Scyther couldn’t battle after the attack, but instead began to glow white. “No way!” Riveing shouted. “After all that?” He asked, quietly, watching as Scyther evolved. As soon as the evolution finished, Scizor struggled to it’s feet.

“Let’s do this! Use guillotine!” Jason shouted and Scizor dashed forward, with one of it’s claws opened and stretched out in front of it.

“Watch out! Stop the attack, Charizard! Flamethrower!” Riveing yelled and Charizard shot a pillar of fire, which quickly turned blue, from the heat and hit Scizor, as it snapped it’s claw around Charizard’s neck. The flamethrower came to an abrupt stop, as both Charizard and Scizor fainted. “You deserve more than a rest, Charizard.” Riveing said quietly, as he recalled Charizard. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed an espeon and a mightyena sitting on a cliff face, watching the battle. Jason noticed them too.

“Hmph…those double crossers.” Jason mumbled to himself. He looked back to Riveing.

“Wait. Why are we fighting? We used to be friends, but now we’re bitter enemies and why? Because Geenara has something we’re both after. Can’t you see? He’s pitting us against each other. We’ve been used this whole time.” Riveing said, suddenly understanding the situation.

“Like I’m going to actually fall for your peace tricks!” Jason shouted.

“This is hopeless!” Riveing shouted. “If you won’t listen, then we’ll have to settle this permanently!” He added, taking a pokeball from his belt. A force quickly stopped his arm and his surroundings turned pitch black, but Jason was with him.

“Both you two, get along for once! If you’re going to come to blows over a common goal, then maybe I shouldn’t have helped either of you!” The voice scolded them. “Together you have six out of eight keys! Just two more and you’ll both be able to claim what you desire. Riveing is right; Geenara has been using you two against each other. You’re the only ones with the skill to defeat him. If he got you to kill each other, he would be free to do as he pleases, the world over!” The voice shouted. Riveing nodded and held his hand out.

“Friends again?” He asked, smiling. Jason wordlessly grabbed his second pokeball. The smile on his face turned to an angry frown. “Stubborn bastard…” He whispered under his breath, grabbing his second pokeball, as well.

“Go, Ampharos!” Jason shouted, as he threw his pokeball. “Now use thunder punch, before Riveing releases his pokemon!” Jason shouted and Ampharos started toward Riveing, with it’s fist crackling with electricity.

“Go! Dragonite! Dragon wrath!” Riveing shouted as he threw the pokeball and jumped away from Ampharos’s attack. As soon as Dragonite emerged from it’s pokeball, in the usual flash of light, it attacked Ampharos with a red, lightning-like beam that split into three and converged on it.

“Electro-field!” Jason shouted and Ampharos projected a dome of electricity around itself and Dragonite’s attack disappeared on contact with the attack.

“Use white flame, Dragonite!” Riveing shouted and Dragonite sent a pillar of pure white fire at the dome of electricity. The electricity soaked up the attack and began to glow very brightly.

“How the hell?” Jason exclaimed, in confusion of what was happening.

‘It’s only a matter of time until that shield bursts, taking Ampharos with it…’ Riveing thought, as he nervously watched Ampharos, as it struggled with the last of it’s waning strength, to hold it’s shield. “Jason, stop this fight!” Riveing burst out.

“I’m not giving up, until I win! Even if it costs me my life!” Jason shouted.

“You’re even willing to sacrifice the life of one of your pokemon?” Riveing asked, angrily. “Winning isn’t that important! Just stop fighting!” He added. Jason didn’t tell Ampharos to let go of it’s shield, but instead, watched as the dome grew ever brighter. Ampharos let out a loud cry of pain and anguish, as the dome turned bright white and exploded, with tremendous force. “You can’t be serious!” Riveing yelled, as he looked in horror at the crater that the explosion left. When the smoke cleared, Ampharos was nowhere in sight…

(to be continued…)

“You’re a monster…” Riveing said, his voice trailing off as he looked at the smoking crater. Ampharos was gone forever and there was nothing he could do about it. It died, serving it’s master, until the end of it’s life. “Do you know that?” Riveing asked Jason, looking away from the crater. Jason had a devilish smile on his face. “You bastard…you don’t even care about your pokemon…” Riveing said, recalling Dragonite and grabbing his third pokeball.

“Do you think I give a **** about my pokemon? What sap cares for pokemon that lose?” Jason asked, taking his third and final pokeball.

“I can’t believe you…after all we’d done together in our younger days…this is how it has to end?” Riveing asked. “Then I won’t complain, if I don’t have a choice. I’ll just have to kill you! Go, Sceptile!” Riveing shouted, throwing his third pokemon.

“Don’t mess up, Machamp!” Jason yelled, throwing his pokeball. “Use cross chop!” He shouted and Machamp began running at Sceptile.

“Dodge it, Sceptile.” Riveing said and Sceptile looked back at him curiously, then waited to avoid Machamp’s attack, as it swing it’s hands in an X. “Now use chain leaf!” Riveing commanded and Sceptile formed two dagger-shaped leaves in it’s hands, then threw them, attached to chains made out of vines. “Now throw it into the air!” Riveing shouted and Sceptile swung Machamp in several circles, then up into the air. “Now rapid leaf!” He added and Sceptile jumped toward it, with the leaves on it’s wrists glowing.

“Counter it!” Jason shouted and Machamp grabbed Sceptile by the arm and began punching it in the face, continually.

“Come on, Sceptile! Break away and use razor tail!” Riveing shouted and Sceptile punched back, then began to spin with it’s tail glowing white. It disappeared, then reappeared on the ground.

“Punch it on your way down, Machamp!” Jason shouted and Machamp recovered itself, from it’s daze and held one of it’s arms back, as it fell toward Sceptile.

“Lookout!” Riveing shouted to Sceptile, but it was too late. Machamp socked Sceptile square in the head, knocking it out…but Machamp fainted as it hit the ground. Riveing recalled Sceptile, as he looked at Jason, who recalled Machamp and threw all his pokeballs away. “You lost.” Riveing said, glaring at him.

“Oh, contraire. I still have one thing left.” Jason said, taking a needle from an inner pocket of his vest. “You see…I’m going to test out Geenara’s new product.” He said, looking at the needle. “It’s tested and has worked time and time again…so…it’s been nice knowing you. I’ll burn you to a crisp.” He said, injecting himself. Riveing watched as the injection threw him into convulsions…

Chapter 8 part 3
----------------------------
In a bright flash, Jason disappeared. Riveing looked at the spot where he once was, in confusion. Did he just blow himself up? He wondered, as he looked at the spot. He could hear something large behind him, but he had a hunch it was Jason. He turned around to see nothing. Just then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw something that looked like a bird on fire. He turned to it, to see Moltres diving at him. He jumped out of the way and sent out Feraligatr. Jason had turned himself into Moltres. How many legendary pokemon will I have to fight? Riveing thought to himself, as he stood up.

“I don’t work for Geenara anymore! Hand over the keys or else!” He heard Jason’s voice shout at him.

“Knowing you, you just want revenge on Geenara for something, don’t you?” Riveing asked. “Yeah, well, I have a better motive. Feraligatr, use hydro pump!” Riveing shouted. Feraligatr opened it’s mouth, wide and a large burst of water shot from it, toward Moltres. The attack had a direct hit, but didn’t seem to do much. Moltres came down for another go at Riveing. “Now, use dynamic punch and smash it to the ground!” Riveing shouted and Feraligatr held a fist back, as it waited for Moltres to come close. Moltres completely missed Feraligatr and was on a bee-line, straight for Riveing. By now, Moltres had come much too close for him to avoid the attack. Feraligatr helplessly watched as it’s trainer braced himself for the unavoidable attack. Suddenly, in a burst of lightning, Riveing quickly found himself several feet away from Moltres, which had plowed into the ground, after being zapped. He looked back, to see Ampharos holding onto his arm. Now even more confused, he looked from Ampharos, to the crater.

“It’s been a long time.” Said a familiar voice, as someone walked up to him. It was Gus. “Let me clear up the whole thing.” He said, helping Riveing up, from his sitting position.

*Yes, a flashback!*

“Umbreon, help Ampharos, with a quick attack.” Gus said to Umbreon. It nodded and shot off, toward the glowing dome of electricity, and returned, with a very weak Ampharos clinging onto it.

*Flashback’s over*

“So that’s why nothing was left of Ampharos…it wasn’t in the explosion at all.” Riveing said, now understanding the situation. “So that bastard Jason is…you’ve got to be kidding--that’s what the injection did?” He asked himself, looking at the twitching Moltres on the ground. Moltres got up and turned into a white outline of itself. The outline changed into Zapdos. “And Jason isn’t done yet.” Riveing said, as he recalled Feraligatr and sent out Sceptile. “Use razor leaf!” He shouted, standing up. Sceptile quickly formed several leaves in it’s hands and threw them at Zapdos, as it rose from the ground. A wave of electricity flowed from Zapdos’ body and turned the leaves to ash. Riveing hesitated a moment, thinking of an attack that might work. He quickly picked up the biggest rock near him and threw it over, in front of Sceptile. “Now, Sceptile! Use bullet seed!” He shouted, as the rock flew through the air. Sceptile, instantly realizing what the rock was for, sent a storm of gold, glowing seeds at it. The seeds shattered the rock, taking bits of it with them. Zapdos destroyed the seeds, but couldn’t affect the rock. The broken pieces of the rock hit Zapdos, with tremendous force, causing it recoil. “Alright, now’s our chance! Get up there and use razor tail!” Riveing shouted and Sceptile dashed, across the field and jumped up to Zapdos, in a blur, seeming to pass through it, as it’s tail stopped glowing. “Now use it one more time!” Riveing added and Sceptile passed through Zapdos, as it came to the ground. Zapdos had reached it’s limit and came crashing to the ground, just as Sceptile had gotten back over to Riveing. The entire area grew silent.

“Did that get him?” Gus asked, leaning forward. Jason wasn‘t done yet. Now Zapdos was morphing into Groudon.

“You’ve got to be kidding!” Riveing shouted, recalling Sceptile and sending out Feraligatr again. “Feraligatr, use Hydro pump!” Riveing commanded. Groudon began charging up a hyperbeam. As the column of water rushed at it, it released the attack and the orange beam of energy destroyed the water, completely and hit Feraligatr, sending it sliding across the ground. “Can you stand up, Feraligatr?” Riveing asked it.

“No…” Was it’s answer. Riveing silently recalled it into it’s pokeball and glared back at Groudon.

“Now what?” He thought, as he stood there.

“Come on, Poliwrath!” Gus shouted, throwing his own pokeball. He looked to Riveing. “Run while you can…we can’t beat him like this.” Gus said.

“And leave you to fight alone?” Riveing asked, looking at him. “I don’t want any more of my friends dying.” He said.

“You’re the only trainer in the region who can beat Geenara…if you died, then we’d all be doomed.” Gus said. “Is that really what you want?” He asked, tears forming in his eyes. “That’s why I want you to run. It’s for the good of the world, not just yourself. I…I want to be a hero, like you…that’s all I ever wanted. You were my role model, ever since we met. Be strong.” Gus said, quietly.

“Quit being emotional…I’m staying.” Riveing said. “If you’re staying, I’m staying.” Riveing said.

“No!” Gus shouted, shoving him the opposite direction of Groudon. “Just go away! I can’t stall it forever. Hurry!” He added. Riveing stared in amazement.

“I won’t forget this…” Riveing said, running off. Gus, seeing that Riveing had finally, left, turned back to Groudon.

“You want a piece of this!?” He shouted at it. “Poliwrath, use water gun!” He shouted, pointing at Groudon. Meanwhile, the espeon and mightyena talked to each other. They both started after Riveing.

“How could you actually do that!?” Firingo’s voice echoed into Riveing’s head. ”You just left your own friend to fight Groudon alone, like that.”

“Shut up!” Riveing shouted. “It’s Geenara’s fault all this is happening! And you know what? He’s in for it, as soon as I get to him!” He added. “I have more than one score to settle--I have to carry the hopes and dreams of the people he’s killed! I don’t want to let anyone else die, because of him or his stupid experiments!” He yelled, running ever faster, as the three keys Jason had, appeared in his collection, with the others.
-------------------------------

And so came an end to the last of Riveing’s childhood friends. Now with pure rage in his heart, what’s in store for Geenara and the remaining two guardians of the keys to his base?
