Chapter 1
(Roughly eight weeks later…)
I sighed as I stared at my reflection in a nearby puddle. My left ear was crushed to the point of never healing, yet I could somehow hear with it. Humans stared at me because of the way I looked. Mangled ear, an old headband with a metal plate worn around my neck along with a necklace, who wouldn’t? I hadn’t a clue where I was, or what surrounded me. Not even after seven weeks in some weird building with a jolly human and some strangely egg-shaped Pokémon had gotten me anywhere near accustomed to any of this. They all acted as if I was born in a place like this. I would go home, provided I knew which way the village was.

My fur was drenched with water because of the recent snow. That of course made me look even worse than I already did. But by now, I could care less in this jungle of stones and structures made from strange material. It hurt to fall and hit the ground and the few places humans didn’t roam were dank alleyways, hidden from the sunlight. And even then, you could still see the occasional human wandering these dark backstreets. This place was much too rough for my liking.

A few hours of aimless wandering saw me to what appeared to be hundreds of living spaces pushed together into what seemed like a small space. Out of curiosity, I peered through a glass door out of natural curiosity. A young human was playing with a Pokémon nearly double their size. The Pokémon’s most notable features were its bulk and huge mouth that was lined with large, sharp teeth. Actually surprised something like that could be so docile, I gave a silent chuckle. Of course, I immediately turned and began walking away when it turned in my direction.

Of course in a place like this, you couldn’t really have any fun if you didn’t have a friend. That was what really made it suck to be me. I was completely alone in the middle of the winter. The scenery reflected myself. Cold and stripped of near everything. How did I even end up in a place like this to begin with?

I sighed and watched my breath turn into a white cloud of steam. As the sun crept out from behind a cloud, the warmth of its rays immediately erupted from the hole in the sky, casting a warm glow on my fur. I could almost feel myself drying off. To actually be warm for once in weeks felt great. It made me wish I could just curl up into a ball and fall asleep. The snow seemed more like a blanket of brilliant gems hat I could sleep under, rather than a bunch of tiny ice crystals. Shame I couldn’t. This place was so strangely foreign that I found it hard to sleep unless I was actually tired.

More wandering brought me to a less densely populated area with gentle rolling hills. The dead grass had yet to be covered with snow and so move in the wind, generating waves of washed out amber. I couldn’t help but wonder whatever happened to the village. If it’s still standing, what’s my family thinking? Am I their disgrace for losing that utterly one-sided battle? I closed my eyes, not wanting to think about it.

“Hey,” said a quiet voice, muffled by layers of cloth, “You cold? I have a spare coat…” I could sense the nervousness radiating from the creature. I guess you could consider a Lucario dangerous if you looked at it in the right perspective. Not mention I had that feral grunge going on, so I figured it must’ve made me seem pretty dangerous.

Eyes open, I turned around.

Standing in front of me was the second smallest human I’d ever seen. It stood maybe a few inches above my own height, but was relatively small. If it wasn’t for the long brown hair hanging out from the bundle of cloth, I wouldn’t have been able to distinguish a gender, but from that single detail I felt safe to assume it was female. Her soft eyes seemed to know what I was going through. However, the fact that near its entire body was armored in all that heavy clothing kept me uneasy.

Held out in its hands was a brown jacket, lined with soft fur over the beige stitches. It was made with obvious quality, being a garment you’d normally see a wealthy human wear during this time of the year. But exactly why was it giving me clothes?

“I saw you wandering around town yesterday and you looked pretty cold out in the snow. I was going to ask if you wanted to come stay with me and my family, but you disappeared. That was when I had a tailor make this specifically for you,” the human said, moving her scarf away and clearly projecting her voice through the still, snow-bound hill. “It should fit perfectly.

I hadn’t even known anything or anyone was watching me. Quietly, I accepted the jacket, not sure what to say. I could already feel the jacket’s warmth without even putting it on. “Thanks…” I said in an undertone as I felt the soft fabric, a blank expression on my face. Of course, I wish the human could understand exactly what I was saying, but in a moment like this, it could be pretty easy to guess. Putting on a piece of clothing wasn’t rocket science, and as a Pokémon of significant intelligence, I easily wore the jacket in the right fashion.

We both just stared at each other expectantly. I was waiting to see what the human would do next. She was probably waiting to see if I’d leave or something. Unlike most Pokémon, I tend to pay rather close attention to what people say. And I’d definitely caught the part of the human wanting to take me home with it. That sounded like a plan. I’d be cleaned for once in weeks. I’d have a warm place to sleep and eat. I could have a friend for once, and in all honesty, all I really wanted was a simple life with humans. I wouldn’t have to worry about guarding something of almighty importance and I wouldn’t be pressured for perfection. I wasn’t thinking about myself. The aura coming from this human definitely suggested she needed someone in her life and her parents weren’t helping. It was really depressing.

Out of nowhere, she just began walking away, without a word. This human probably figured I just wanted it to leave me alone. Ha, now that’s funny. This girl needed help, and I had to be the one who’d do it. This sort of emotional aura suggested little will to live. I wasn’t about to wait until she committed suicide and feel like an ass for not doing anything when I could.

“Hey, wait,” I said, jogging until I was beside her, “You could at least say something before walking away like that.” I sighed in a cloud of steam as we slowly made our way back toward the city.

That was when a large ball of fire stopped in front of us, quickly uncurling to show the very same monster that’d nearly killed me eight weeks before. And apparently it was going through its growth spurts—it stood nearly twice my height—roughly two feet taller than the last time I saw it. The human that gave it orders wasn’t anywhere in sight.

“That’s one big Typhlosion…” the girl said in awe as she slowly backed away. That’s what this thing was? A Typhlosion?

The fire that rested on its shoulders blazed to life and the tremendous heat quickly melted the snow around us. It immediately began charging for its all too devastating Hyper Beam. That attack nearly did me in—the human would be completely obliterated if she was caught in the beam.

Without a second thought I held onto her coat with one hand and pushed my other toward the large Typhlosion. A dome of cyan energy enveloped us both as the Typhlosion’s attack slammed into it, simply bursting all around the area and fading out. Protect. I quickly stepped forward and gestured for the girl to cover her ears as I took a deep breath. Metal Sound was one of the most dreaded attacks around, especially considering it was ten times worse than Screech. As soon as I was sure the human had covered its ears, I let loose an incredibly loud scream. My blood curdled at its sound. Imagine a chalkboard being scratched with nails made of rough iron. Multiply that by about five times. That, combined with the sheer volume was enough to send the Typhlosion to a position on the ground, hands clapped over its ears, completely paralyzed by the attack. I quickly let my voice die down as I turned, taking the girl’s hand as we ran off into what was apparently Onyxia City by what I’d seen on a few signs.
