OOC: CIS = Confederacy of Independent States, which dominants the central regions of the Continent of Etremia in this universe. It is a disparate, HRE-esque mess. Here you will find Erundale, Westminster (A colony descended from Bennerian Exiles) and The Royal Order of the Black Torrent, among many others. All three of these nations are real CCRPG ones, though Westminster was not, originally, Bennerian exiles (as there was no Benneria in 4.2)

The following countries are on Etremia: CIS, Duran, Sietch, Umoja, Parnaria, The United Emencian States of Etremia (Usually called Emencia, after the fall of Dutrayan Emencia) when the story starts.

This is provide something resembling a loose background for everyone. The next posts will be about the 3rd Duro-Sietchian War, and then the first two years of the Sietchian Civil War. Part II will focus more on Benneria, Rezellia, Sophultima and a resurgant Darzick (Secretly backed by Veluna). In this history, there was a Great Centran War against Darzick from 1920-1925. Yes, I know Darzick was not on Centreland, but screw it. I needed an enemy, and Darzick fit the bill.

The Dominion of Greater Sietch
Short Name: Sietch, Greater Sietch
Ruler: His Most Glorious Majesty, Lord of the Sun and Stars, Grand Prince Rhombur II Vorenus, Dictator of Sietch, King of the Sandsea, Lord of the Underdark, Grand Prince of Ix, Junction and Kaitain, King of Geb
Government: Absolute Dictatorship, with all power centralized in the hands of the Dictator. A mostly efficient if mildly corrupt bureaucracy executes the Dictators commands, which are enforced by the Army.
Population: 47,300,000 - 1992 Census [84% Sietchian, 4% Gebbite, 3% Atlantean, 11% Other]
Capital City: Ix
Other Major Cities: Junction, Kaitain, Thibas, New Atlantis
Internal Problems: A revolt in the city of Junction was put down violently by Grand Prince Rhombur II in 1993 has resulted in hard feelings all around, and a revolt seems to be simmering beneath the surface of Sietchian society.
Allies: United Emencian States of Etremia, the Umojan States of Etremia and Domains, The Koussathian Empire. Signatory of the Mar Sara Pact.
Distrusted Nations: The People's Republic of Se'alon, the United States of Rezellia, The Bennerian Empire, the Union of Krussian Socialist Republics, the Republic of Sophultima
Enemies: (Not currently at War) The Duran Imperium, the Antethian Reich, the United Swintini Emirates
Overview:

The Dominion of Greater Sietch is a geological oddity of the highest order. Its dominant physical features are the Sandsea, the Underdark, and the River Geb. The River Geb is fairly simple, just a powerful river that floods seasonally as it flows down from the Tauran Mountains in the CIS – to the north of Sietch- south into the Gulf of Atlantis. The land around it, therefore, is rich with minerals and allows for food to be grown along its banks.

The Sandsea, is as the name implies, a massive desert that has been compared to a sea in the vast extent of the sand. There are oases dotting the desert, and closer to the coasts, there is some relief from the parched landscape, as the prevailing wind systems allows for those areas to get occasional rain. But most of Sietch is unlivable desert, inhabited by wandering Arrakian Tribes – a nomadic subset of the Sietchian race.

The Underdark is the real geological oddity. Underneath the surface of the Sandsea is a massive network of wide, tall underground tunnels and caverns. Miles upon miles of these tunnels and caverns exist underneath the desert, with some of the biggest caverns being 300 feet wide and 50 feet high. The largest cavern, on the other hand, is about 500 feet high and some three square miles in size. How these caverns came to be is unknown though Geologists have been arguing about them since Geology came to exist as a science. The Sietchian Religion claims that their gods created these tunnels. One even greater oddity about the Underdark is that many of the caverns have lakes full of fish – some of which are clearly related to the fish of the Gulf of Atlantis and the Artigon Ocean, both of which border Sietch.

[/i]Editor's Note:[/i] We now know that the tunnels and caverns were created by the now extinct alien race we call the Deshruni.

Sietchian society revolves around the Underdark and the River Geb. The three main Sietchian cities – Ix, Kaitain and Junction, are all built over some of the largest caverns, and actually have suburbs within these caverns. Without these caverns and the water and food they provide, Sietch as we know it could never exist, and the ancient Kingdom of Geb almost certainly would still exist in some form.

Sietch's economy revolves around two resources: Its world-famous tea, and oil. These two liquids are what gives Sietch its prosperity, and force its rivalry with one of the other major oil exporting nations of the world: Swintini. While many other nations do produce a lot of oil (The Martomic Coast, Se'alon, etc), 55% of global oil exports are from these two countries.

Sietch's large GDP – driven by the oil exports first and foremost, although also by local industries and a substantial manufacturing sector, is misleading about the lives of the average citizen. While no means starving or otherwise suffering too unduly, the vast majority of Sietch's wealth ends up three hands: The Pontifex of Kaitain, currently Paul Atredies, The Grand Prince, currently Rhombur II Vorenus, and a collection of wealthy business magnates based in Junction. The magnates wisely withdrew from Junction during the '93 revolt, and have kept most of their wealth intact, although they represent the only force that could pose a threat to the Grand Prince and his alliance with the Pontifex.

Overall, most of the people are loyal to Rhombur, due to their loyalty to the Cult of the Unconquered Sun and the Pontifical alliance with the Grand Prince, as well as centuries of the House of Vorenus ruling Sietch. However, the northern reaches of Sietch around Junction – as well as the Gebbite and Atlantean minorities – are unhappy with Rhombur's rule.

Sietch's military was not that impressive to look at before the Umoja-Sietch Pact of 1978. While rich from oil Exports, it had fallen behind in the arms race and had a military grossly out of date – it lacked jet engines for its planes, for example, and the only machine guns it had were the bulky and stationary emplacements used during the trench warfare of the Great Centran War (1920-1925).

Umoja and its allies are allied with Sietch as a matter of convenience. Swintini allied with Duran in 1976, and in order to secure oil supplies – and to stop Sietch from being overrun by Duran, which sits just across the Gulf of Atlantis from Sietch – Umoja swallowed its democratic principles and aligned with Sietch, and Emencia and Koussath followed suit in 1979. Umoja and its allies provided much needed technical upgrades to Sietch's military, but were horrified to see it used to stop a Gebbite uprising in 1981. It signed the Mar Sara Pact in 1982 with Umoja, Emencia, Koussath and other nations (OOC: Meaning I haven't decided which ones) to oppose Duranic expansion everywhere it rears its head.

Still, lacking an alternative, Umoja, Emencia and Koussath came to Sietch's aid in the First Duro-Sietchian War (1983-1985), which saw fighting more in the territory of the weak and ineffectual CIS between Umojan-Emencian and Duranic Armies, and Umojan-Koussathian and Duro-Antethian navies on the Artigon Ocean. It was settled inconclusively with the Treaty of Ecthelion, moderated by the USR, but it is no surprise war broke out in 1988, when Rhombur II Vorenus took the throne following his Uncle's death. The 2nd Duro-Sietchian war started when Sietch decided to press territorial claims in the CIS and Duran refused to accept them. This war ended in the favor of Sietch when the powerful CIS member Erundale announced its support for Sietch and helped win a crucial battle for Sietch. The Treaty of Westminster in 1991 recognized those claims. The claims were over some mineral rich hill country previously owned by a loose collection of small towns and city-states. It is the people of this area that provide most of the 'Other', as the CIS is a very ethnically diverse and mixed 'nation', after centuries of population displacement, migrations, invasions and co-mingling of peoples.

As of now, Umoja and its allies are growing very weary of Sietch's oppressive regime, and relations grew very strained after the 1993 Junction uprising. New Atlantis has long been sought by Duran, and Duran shows no signs of letting up its desires for the territory, which is very likely to be amenable to being ruled by Duran.

Ancient History: The ancient history of Sietch begins in 1,100 B.C.E. When the Empire of Atlantis settled trading posts on the coast of Sietch. When earthquakes and the resulting underwater volcanic explosions (resulting in Tsunamis) destroyed most of the Atlantean Isles in 745 B.C. The survivors of Atlantis fled to one of them and renamed it New Atlantis. They would in turn heavily influence Gebbite Culture, and the Kingdom of Geb, in one form or another (OOC: Egypt) ruled the lands surrounding the River Geb halfway to its source from 437 B.C.E. Until 1,012 C.E., when population pressures on the Sietchian tribes (most of the population of which had settled in and above the largest caverns forced them to attack both the small, trade based New Atlantis Republic, and the Kingdom of Geb, then under its 26th Dynasty. Various states ruled in the tunnels, caverns and the surface until House Vorenus united them all in a series of wars, alliances and marriages from 1,537 to 1,678.

Sietch Declares War on Duran!

In a move that comes as a shock, but no real surprise to anyone, the Dominion of Greater Sietch, led by its oppressive and brutal dictator, Grand Prince Rhombur II Vorenus, is once again at war with the Duran Imperium. The two powers have previously waged two wars, the 1st Duro-Sietch War (1983-1985), which ended inconclusively, and the 2nd Duro-Sietch War (1988-1991), which saw Sietch make some territorial gains in the CIS.

The declaration of war was delivered by Leo Harrkonan, the Sietch Ambassador to Duran early yesterday morning. Cited among the reasons for the declaration were “Clear and present proof of Duranic support for the 1993 Junction rebellion, and Duranic encouragement of resistance against Sietchian Rule in the province of New Atlantis.” The government of Sietch has not produced proof of the first charge, although the second one is a matter of public record, with Imperator Moran Argelev I having gone so far as to actively call for the people of New Atlantis to rise up against Sietchian Authority.

The Sietchian government, in a press release an hour after the declaration was delivered, stated, “The Duran Imperium is a blight on Etremia and it is time that the Argelev Family fully get what is coming to them. This war will not end until the House Argelev has been removed from power in Orogoth.”

The Government of recently elected Umojan Prime Minister Alkeni Synair, of the ultra-militaristic Dominion Party, has commented on the declaration. “While the USE and Domains applauds its ally's passion, such a statement is counterproductive to the proper prosecution of a war against Duran, as it will only stiffen Duranic resistance to allied attacks.” Nevertheless, Umoja issued its own declaration of war against Duran and Antethia (which had declared war against Sietch a short time after the Sietchian declaration). Se'alon, Duran's loose and only occasional ally has yet to make a response. The Koussathian Empire, having hated Duran since before its foundation, quickly issued its own declaration of war, Empress Kylia XI using a little known legal prerogative to bypass the Koussathian Parliament when she issued the declaration. Secretary of State Tyler Goldman {Editor's Note: The Rezellian Secretary of State and future President during the 2nd Great Centran War} has called this an “unnecessary ignoring of the democratic process” by the usually progressive Koussathian Imperial Family. The United Emencian States of Etremia Congress has yet to issue a declaration of war, though its expected they will very soon.

An unnamed source in Prime Minister Synair's senior staff has informed the Ecthelion Times that although Umoja is supporting its Ally, some within the Umojan cabinet – including the Prime Minister himself - are angry at Sietch for 'declaring war prematurely' and only supporting it because of the mutual defense pacts it has with the nation. The Times has not received a comment on this when we asked the Prime Minister's office directly.

Dr. Arnold Bigsley, a a noted Professor of Political Science and International Relations at St. Mary's University* who has published several books on Etremia, its nations and its wars, told the Times “Sietch is gambling on the idea of the 'short victorious war', with the idea of rallying the people with patriotic messages and an enemy, beating said enemy soundly, and thus having less internal dissent to deal with. The most famous example of an attempted 'short victorious war' was when Tsar Nicholas II Romanov of Krussia declared war on the Empire of Knightmaria in 1904. That war, of course went horridly for the Krussians, and didn't even clamp down on internal dissent. Personally, I believe history will repeat itself with Sietch. Duran as drawed a war with Sietch and its allies, and technically lost won, so Duran is really looking to get its own back. Having allied with Black Torrent to counter Erundale, the CIS front of this war is going to be much more even, and I think it likely Duran will win this war, although almost certainly not the overwhelming victory Moran I has promised.”

No Knightmaria? :hmm:
I may include them as a smaller power. I don't have enough experience with them to use them as a major one.

Remember, this part is focusing on Sietch.

I may put Knightmaria in the CIS

I have edited in Knightmaria to replace Zeon in the Krusso-<Japanese> war, because MK has a new, really cool version of Zeon we'll be using.

Knightmaria will feature in the Krussian episodes, and possibly other ones.

I don't have a complete map down

Editor's Note: This is a summary of the Battle of Freeden, produced by the Velunese Imperial Espionage Directorate, which drew the summary from information provided by its agents in the governments of the various combatants. It was completed on June 15th, 1997

-Alexander Jefferson, PhD, University of Rezanople

Following the flurry of declarations of war between May 22nd and May 25th, the two sides of the 3rd Duro-Sietch War are as follows: The Duran Imperium, Antethian Reich, The Royal Order of the Black Torrent and the Aeolian League – hereafter called the Duran Alliance (Editor's note: The Aeolian League was a loose alliance of small towns, fiefdoms and a few city-states in the CIS) versus the USE and Domains, the Koussathian Empire, the United Emencian States of Etremia, the Most Serene Republic of Erundale, the Dominion of Greater Sietch, and the Eleatic League (Editor's Note: Similar to the Aeolian League) – hereafter called the Mar Sara Pact Alliance (Or MSPA).

On June 8th, the first major battle of the war was fought in the vicinity of Freeden, a small independent town of perhaps 10,000 people near the border of Black Torrent territory. There had of course been minor skirmishes between Aeolian and Eleatic Forces, Sietchian and Duranic ships, Antethian and Koussathian ships and Aeolian and Emencian Forces, but they were all small in size and resulted in no major defeats or victories for either side. Freeden was a neutral polity, and the battle was not intended to be fought there, but it happened anyway, as MSPA Forces heading to the Black Torrent and Duran Alliance Forces heading to key Eleatic League member Fyrondy encountered eachother and fought.

The Duran Alliance brought 89,000 soldiers to the battle – 78,000 Duranic soldiers, 8,000 Black Torrent soldiers, and 3,000 Antethian Soldiers. The MSPA brought 102,000 soldiers – 56,000 Umojan, 29,000 Emencians, 11,000 Erundalese, 4,000 Eleatic and 2,000 Sietchian soldiers. All numbers are approximate.

The MSPA Forces were under the command of General Georig Jessiu, the man who had successfully led Umojan forces to victory during the 2nd Duro-Sietch War. The Duran Alliances Forces were under the command of Imperator Moran I's cousin Crubalt. Crubalt is a newcomer to the Duranic officer corps, but apparently showed himself quite skilled by defeating several other members of the General Staff in a series of War Games in the aftermath of the 2nd Duro-Sietch War.

The Duran Alliance Forces, as the two forces drew closer together, took residency in and around Freeden, evicting the populace en masse and digging in in preparation of the MSPA forces. This occurred on June 6th.

On June 7th, the MSPA forces lined reached the vicinity of Freeden – about five miles from it – and took residency in and around the smaller town of Altchress, also evicting the populace. Both of these evictions, its should be noted, took place relatively bloodlessly. The two armies were separated by a one-mile stretch of land. For the rest of the day, and into the night, the air forces of both sides – based in the Black Torrent and Eleatic Territory respectively – dueled for supremacy of the skies, but in the end, neither side could claim it. Light bombing of enemy positions is believed to have caused around 1,500 casualties for both sides, around half of them dead.

On June 8th, the General Jessiu ordered the MSPA armor forward, and Crubalt sent his own armor to counter it. When it became clear that the outnumbered, but clearly possessing of superior hardware Duranic tanks were winning the fight, Jessiu ordered in half tracks and the infantry – with bazookas or to cover those with bazookas – into the fight.
The Duranic forces were pushed back to Freeden, the Duranic tanks pulling back around the city and covering its flanks, but, this was apparently according to Crubalt's plan. Jessiu ordered his men to attack the city, and Umojan artillery rapidly demolished stone walls that had been in place since the medieval ages. A few hours of brutal house to house fighting in Freeden, and just plain brutal fighting around Freeden saw the MSPA, having taken heavy casualties, only in possession of about half the city. General Jessiu ordered a fighting withdrawal, and the Duranic forces did not harry them too hard. Crubalt himself later reported in a dispatch to his cousin “It was a very near thing, despite my plan executing perfectly.”.

In the final analysis, the MPSA had taken 23,000 casualties – 7,000 dead, 11,000 wounded and 5,000 captured. The Duran Alliance took 17,000 casualties – 8,000 dead and 9,000 casualties. Again, all numbers are approximate.

On June 9th, the MSPA Forces withdrew, in good order, back towards Eleatic territory.

Death Rates (compared to non-dead casualties) are a bit high, not that it is impossible but normally out of all casualties less then 15% are deaths (in modern warfare). For reference in World War I/II it was roughly 1 dead for every 2-3 wounded. So you may want to add a specific reason as to why the death rates were so high (or change the numbers).

All of the above applies exclusively to military statistics.

I was thinking in some cases the two sides - with such emnity - killed wounded enemy soldiers that might have been nearby. Not all the time, but both sides have been at war, depending on the country, for 50 years or more. (Umoja's bad blood with Duran stretches back into the mid 1700s, though there was a long period of 'peace' during the global fracturing after the Third Pirate War.

Editors Note: This is an interview between Serra Saliln, a reporter for Kirath Weekly Telegraph An important finacial affairs journal, and Kalaius Yoresh, the Koussathian Minister of Finance and Commerce during the 3rd Duro-Sietch War. The interview took place on June 14th 1997, and the issue was published June 16th, 1997.

OOC: Kirath is the capital of Koussath. Koussath is on the continent of Muropa, which is due west of Etremia. Antethia is on the continent of Gorgava, which is south of Muropa, and southwest of Etremia. Detriana is west of Muropa. The Bennerian Isles are south of Detriana and northwest of Gorgava. The UKSR owns the entire continent of Treplica. Treplica is in the Southern Hemisphere, Kriberia is close to the Antarctic Circle (duh) Houchalanga is a nation to the north (on Muropa) of Koussath.

- Alexander Jefferson, PhD, University of Rezanople.

SALILN: Thank you for agreeing to the interview Minister.

YORESH: It is no problem. Transparency in government – as much as is practically possible – has long been a foundation of this Empire. I am answerable to the people as much to the Empress. The Salkaturi Riots proved that. (Chuckles slightly

(Editor's Note: The Salkaturi Riots took place in March, 1837, when the exceedingly unpopular Minister of the Treasury, Egredius Jurish, announced a series of tax breaks for wealthy businessmen and manufacturers. While they had been intended to increase the industrial base of the Empire, the high sales tax – 23% - was felt disproportionately by the poor, and the people had had enough of the anti-people Minister. Salkaturi Commeln led a series of riots calling for the Minister's dismissal. After three days of riots, the Emperor, Kalaius III, acceded and fired the Minister.)

SALILN: Lets dive right into the meat of the interview, Shall we?

YORESH: Please.

SALILN: At the moment, are you or anyone in the Imperial Bureaucracy, considering a tax increase in regards to the new war?

YORESH: Well...you weren't kidding when you said dive right in. Pauses for a moment At the moment, the answer is no. I spoke to Minister [of War] Lyndis Tessen just this morning, and at the moment, the current budget she has allotted to her is more than enough to prosecute the war. I have no doubt that at some point we will have to raise taxes, but at the moment, we have enough to get the job done.

SALILN: Moving from taxes, how about trade? The war is certainly going to disrupt off our supply of oil from Sietch, and domestic oil will not provide anywhere the level we need. Where do you think the government and businesses will or should be looking?

YORESH: Well, the Martomic Coast, despite being an unreliable business partner at best, is probably where we'd start. From there, likely the Bennerian colonies on Detriana. I'd say Bennerian oil, while slightly more expensive, is probably a safer bet for our businesses. Tankers can get there much easier and safer – Antethia isn't willing to risk rousing the ire of the world's strongest navy by attacking commercial vessels of any nation in their waters. If nothing else, the Union of Krussian Socialist Republics has unlocked a lot of the oil hidden under Kriberian ice, and while they may be invertible communists, they'll sell to us or our businesses readily. I believe they have a phrase for the concept, “The capitalists shall sell us the rope we shall use to hang them with.”

SALILN: What about investments? While no one in Koussath has any investments in the Duranic Markets, many of our business have investments tied up in the CIS - in the Aeolian League and the Black Torrent and they are current at war with us. Some have some small investments in the Antethian Markets. Where do you suggest investors look?

YORESH: I would say Benneria and its various colonies, but also possibly Houchalanga. There is a lot of room for development there – they don't have much of a rail road network, but they've just gotten a solid steel industry going. They're going to need a lot of capital to get railroads built between their major population centers and all that. As many know, we are working on a treaty with Houchalanga's Council of Elders to facilitate investment between our two countries. I expect a copy to cross the Empress' desk in a few days, and Parliament and the Houchalanga Council of Elders will begin debating it with a few days after that.

Editor's Note: The interview goes on for several pages. Interested parties may inquire with Johnathon Strouss, PhD, University of Rezanople for the full interview/
