THE BANANA REPUBLIC

Welcome to the Banana Republic! Banana Republic is a roleplaying game set during the height of the Cold War between the United States and Soviet Union, but is centered on the country of Banavia, a small island off the coast of South America. Here, the players take the positions of important government officials, military generals, or rebels attempting to overthrow the government.
The Banana Republic is a simple roleplaying game, with few rules. The most important rule is no godmodding; stay within the limits of your character. The powers of each character should be fairly obvious.

Banavia, A History
The island of Banavia gained independence in 1947, and the Banavian Republic was declared a short time later, in the early months of 1948. From 1948 to 1961, Banavia was ruled by Presidente Jose Pavadilla Aranas, who was helped to power by the International Fruit Company. During his presidency, the International Fruit Company became a major force in Banavia. Pavadilla's regime pandered to the International Fruit Company, posing as democratic government.

As time went by, the Banavian populace began to grow tired of the oppressive dictatorship with Pavadilla at the head. Growing frustration finally broke out into violence as a rebellious movement calling itself the National Liberation Front began waging a guerrilla war against Pavadilla's troops. In 1958, troops of the National Liberation Front marched victoriously into Santa Maria, the capital of Banavia. Pavadilla was caught attempting to flee the presidential palace, and was arrested for numerous crimes against the people of Banavia. After a brief trial by a revolutionary tribunal, Pavadilla was executed by firing squad.

Following up on their promise of a new chance for democracy in Banavia, the National Liberation Front arranged for elections of a new presidente. Thousands of Banavians have flooded the streets to cast their votes.

Factions

Banavian Republic: The government of Banavia, it has been temporarily overthrown by the National Liberation Front until elections for a new presidente have come to pass. Many former Pavadilla supporters in the government have either been imprisoned or escaped into exile. OPEN POSITIONS: Presidente, American Ambassador, Soviet Ambassador, Cuban Ambassador

Revolutionary Communist Party: Comprised mostly of the rural and urban poor, nationalist radicals, and communists, the Revolutionary Communist Party was a major force behind the National Liberation Front. The Communists support closer ties with Cuba and other socialist countries, and call for Banavia to cut off business ties with the International Fruit Company. Currently the most powerful party in Banavian politics. OPEN POSITIONS: Chairman

Democratic Stability Party: The old party of Pavadilla, the Democrats are made up of mostly wealthy landowners, religious conservatives, and Pavadilla's military forces still loyal to him. They are supported internationally by the International Fruit Company. They call for keeping the status quo of an open market and close ties with the United States. Though an unpopular party in wake of the revolution against Pavadilla, it is still a powerful force. OPEN POSITIONS: Chairman

Independent Reform Party: One of the few opposition parties that was tolerated by Pavadilla, the Independent Reformists call for a middle-of-the-road approach to foreign and domestic affairs. Finds itself mostly supported by the growing Banavian middle class of shopkeepers, merchants, and small business owners. Currently the second-largest party behind the National Revolutionary Union. OPEN POSITIONS: Chairman

Banavian Reconciliation Army: After the fall of Pavadilla, the forces of the victorious National Liberation Front were shuffled into what remained of the Banavian military. The two forces share an equal amount of power, with a commander from the National Liberation Front and a commander from the Banavian Army sharing command of the new military. OPEN POSITIONS: 2 Colonels

Patriotic Guard: Death squads that carried out assassinations and torture of opponents to Pavadilla's regime. Though most members have been imprisoned, several key leaders are still at large. It is unknown whether they are hiding somewhere in Banavia or have escaped abroad. OPEN POSITIONS: Colonel

Banavian Police Service: The police force of Banavia was known for their corruption and use of brutal measures against those who resisted Pavadilla's rule, and was almost completely dismantled after the National Liberation Front took power. It has since been restaffed by more civic-minded Banavians. OPEN POSITIONS: Police Chief

International Fruit Company: A corporation that trades in tropical fruit, primarily bananas. Controlled much of Banavia through the efforts of former Presidente Pavadilla, who the International Fruit Company helped put into power. Currently has a monopoly on almost all banana plantations in Banavia. OPEN POSITIONS: Chairman

Banavian Workers Federation: The largest organization of unions in Banavia, the Banavian Workers Federation is comprised mostly of miners, factory workers, teamsters, and dockworkers. Illegalized under Pavadilla's regime, the Banavian Workers Federation was a branch of the National Liberation Front, fighting a guerrilla war in the streets of Santa Maria and other major Banavian cities. OPEN POSITIONS: President

International Monetary Fund: An international organization that aides poorer nations with loans, in exchange for economic policies more appealing to trade with the member states. OPEN POSITIONS: Representative

Banavia Ahora: State newspaper that became little more than propaganda under the Pavadilla presidency. Currently under the reigns of the Revolutionary Communist Party, who have stated their intention to turn it over to the government as soon as elections for presidente have come to pass. OPEN POSITIONS: Chief Editor

Places

Santa Maria: The largest city of Banavia, Santa Maria is the center of the Banavian government. Located in the south, Santa Maria looks over the waters of the Playa de Oro.

Villa Pavadilla: Former Presidente Pavadilla's presidential palace, it is now serving as a temporary hospital for the peasants and farmers in the area.

Bellaville: Second-largest town in Banavia.

I guess, if y'all wanna do it here we will.

Also, Lundy, the positions are ranked in order of importance. It's more important for the RP to have all the top positions filled first. Otherwise there's huge power vacuums.

No. Cuba was a regional power at this time, and though was positioned with the Soviets on many points had a degree of independence.

I will camp out at the bottom for now and move up if/when it is necessary.

:hmm: I put the Banavia Ahora position just in case there was an influx of people (again, WC), which I doubt there will be on here. I can't stress the importance of the top ones enough though.

Regardless it seems we need some more people just to have this work at all. As I said I will move around to make it work but have my first choice.
