OOC: Unlike TV and Radio news outlets which are monitored by the IMJ, newspapers and magazines are not censored or screened, and newspaper writers and the like are protected from reprisal by both tradition and Imperial Iron Edicts, which cannot simply be disregarded by future Kaisers, and the question of its repeal must be submitted to a vote of every Imperial Citizen.![]() In this issue:
Antethia outlaws any media that mentions Veluna or is produced by a Velunese Citizen or Subject. The Holy Dominion of Antethia, following up its Edict of Sanctity (which allowed the Holy Dominar, the political, religious and military leader of Antethia, the ability to change what books and other forms of media are 'heretical and blasphemous' and therefore banned by the 'government' of Antethia.) has passed a Dominial Bull outlawing any material written about or otherwise mentioning Veluna, or any media that is produced or written by a Velunese Citizen or Subject. In the text of the Dominal Bull itself, the Holy Dominar, Judas XI, claims that this must be done so that: "so that it [the Velunese related media] may no longer plague our souls and our nation". In the opinion of the Kaisar and leading Religious Psychologist Dr. Randel Tersic, it is simply a way to ensure that there is no chance of any Antethian doubting the words of their church. In an interview with Veluna Today reporter Tyria Sorn, Dr. Tersic added: "This is a common reaction by churches, whether they are entwined with or separated from the local government. They claim that their faith is unshakable, and that nothing can pull them from their 'god' - or goddess, gods, goddesses or what have you - and at the same time they restrict their lay members from having any access to texts or other forms of media that even remotely differ from the party line. If their faith is so unshakable, why not give their faithful a chance to prove it?” The Kaisar, in a public statement in response to the Bull, said that it was “little more than laughable” and that “Veluna has little interest in forcing reason and logic on those too ignorant to listen.” He continued to say that he believed that Antethia, through this edict, was showing the first signs of cracking under the weight of its theocratic system, and that soon Church rule in place of State in Antethia would fall onto the ash heap of history. Popular opinion is firmly against Antethia even more so than previously, but that is hardly news, as nearly everything Antethia does infuriates the average person on the street. Two Imperial Edicts are passed to counter the Antethian Bull. In response to the Dominal Bull and the Edict of Sanctity, the Kaisar has passed two Imperial Edicts, the Edict of Prohibition and the Edict of Intellectual Freedom respectively. The Kaisar himself refused to comment, but a spokesman for the Imperial Government stated “The Kaisar passed the Edict of Prohibition with great reluctance, and has some misgivings on it, but he stands firmly behind the Edict of Intellectual Freedom as being an essential representation of Veluna's ideals.” The Edict of Prohibition bars anyone of Antethian ethnicity or Thein religion from entering Veluna for any reason, including embassies or other forms of diplomatic missions, which effectively means that Veluna has withdrawn recognition of Antethia's existence as an actual nation. On this, the Kaisar's spokesman has said that this is an absolute falsity, but political observers, including experts in Craelia say that while this may not be the intent, it is certainly the result. While public support for the barring of Antethians and Theins from ever entering Velunese territory is high, the public is split on the punishment for violaters of this Edict – 5 lashes from an Electro-whip – has met with some resistance, but others have claimed that it does not go far enough in punishing them. The Edict of Intellectual Freedom has met with widespread support, with many people saying that it indeed represents the highest of Veluna's ideals. However, Jacolis Dortelar, leader of the far-right and ultra nationalist Veluna First! movement, has criticized the Edict, claiming that “Veluna and its people have no need to read or learn about a bunch of ignorant savages in the southern jungles, and especially not to read their holy books. The Kaisar should do to Antethian writings as Antethia has done to ours!” Needless to say, Mr. Dortelar has been ignored by the Kaisar. Reconquest of Umoja nearly complete After nearly 4 years, the Minister of War has announced that the Umojan Protectorate, last province to secede from the Empire will be fully reclaimed by the end of the year. Velunese soldiers, according the Ministry of War, have moved into the last district of the Protectorate, Chau Sara, and are in the process of fully pacifying its residents. The ULF has issued a statement saying that Umoja will never submit to Velunese Rule, and a car bomb on the streets of Chau Sara injured several soldiers, the first overtly violent action taken by the ULF since its formation in late -1. The IMJ has announced it is investigating the car bomb and is withholding any statement until the investigation is complete. Reclamation of Helvandus proceeding well In the same press-conference as when she announced the nearly complete reconquest of Umoja, the Minister of War also said that the reclamation of Helvandus was proceeding well, and that by the end of next year, Helvandus should be returned to the Empire. Helvandus, by all reports, is mostly amenable to Imperial rule, and what little resistance there is is sporadic and unorganized. Mid-Avalon Conference a Resounding Success The Mid-Avalon Conference, convened last year and adjourned a few days into this year, was by all accounts a full success. Very little was actually resolved at the meeting, most issues being tabled for a later series conference to be held every two years in the various capitals of the nations involved, but good will was generated and a mutual understanding of spheres of influence was concluded. The conference also determined that the translation of the region in mid-northern Avalon in International Common would be 'The Trithsmus', refering to the fact that unlike an ordinary isthmus, it goes into three separate peninsulas. Parnaria, which was invited to the conference, did not attend, but Nimrol, Craelia and Zeon, as well as Veluna all attended. |
