Public Battle Test!; War Games Exhibition!

That's right, fun for everyone! I've spent a day and a half coding a "Battle Calculator" to calculate the results of any engagement between units. It takes into account Attack Power, Tactical Power, Terrain Types, and whether or not the defender is Fortified.

So, while the Automation Team actually makes the real war system, which we can try out later at some point and have it be fully automated, I thought we could have some fun testing out the theories we've put together for war.

So, I am calling for a "War Games" Exhibition here on the forums (we could turn this into a big continuing minigame even). Thus, I would like to have a volunteer to become the main overseer of the War Games (Wraith?). You would have to be well versed in the new battle system, and organize missions.

The Battle Rules

Just a little bit of a refresher, some points:

  1. Units have movement ranges (MR) within a sector, with 1 value corresponding to one cell (North, South, East, West), you may not move diagonally (it would count as two movements).
  2. Units have HP and AP, this is nothing new to anyone.
  3. All units have Attack Ranges (AR), with most units having 1 AR. This means that to engage an enemy unit, you must move to a cell adjacent (N,S,E,W, not diagonally) to it and use your AP. However, if your unit has AR 2+, you may use AP against it if it falls within that radius of your cell. A unit hit from a distance can NOT defend itself.
See FIGURE 1 (<-link) The battleship has a range of 2 (red squares) and thus can hit the troopship but not the carrier.
  4. Units may "Fortify" their ground, which takes one turn. If they are attacked before that turn ends, they do not gain any fortification bonus.
  5. VICTORY CONDITIONS: A sector is "won" if (a) 51% of all Control Points are captured by an invading force [CPs are to be determined by the War Games Coordinator for now] OR (b) all enemy units are routed OR © the enemy surrenders the sector OR (d) for these minigames, any requirement the War Games Coordinator decides (special targets, assassinations, etc).
  6. THINGS NOT UTILIZED: In the future, we will have separate parallel planes to accommodate high-flying bombers, submarines, etc. Also, submarines here can only be attacked by Destroyers, assuming they are always submerged. Espionage, Fog of War, and Reconnaissance are NOT used due to impossible implementation in this method.
  7. All normal battle rules from the past remain.
  8. Please see ASSETS LIST (<-link) for unit stats. Also, please note that Transport Units (above military units) transport units as well as goods (i.e. Airlifter can carry Infantry or Tanks etc)
Now, I want you guys to create your own maps and create custom missions. Just keep in mind that everything is "open," there are no "covert" operations since there is no Fog of War and/or need for Reconnaissance. But that doesn't mean you can't be creative in building missions.

Now, I want to give everyone the opportunity to create missions with this:

Mission-Builder Tool Kit

  • Each sector is a 9x9 cell grid (81 cells total). Each cell can hold 1 Structure AND 50 units (of one type only).BLANK SECTOR MAP (<-link)
  • TERRAIN IMAGES/COLORS (<-link) Note that "Urban" Terrain is simply any cell with a structure built in it.
  • MILITARY UNITS (<- link)
  • EVERYTHING ELSE (<- link) For if you want to fill your sector with "fun" stuff from government buildings to entertainment buildings to factories to politicians to firemen to yachts. See Assets List above for what they are/do.
  • EXAMPLE SECTOR MAP (<-link) WITH UNITS (<-link)Obviously, it will require a bit of manipulation to get all the units and map to look as pretty as this, but it's simple in MS Paint.
THE BATTLE CALCULATOR (<-link)
For the actual engagements, simply plugin the stats it asks. (Make sure you click the box whether or not a defender is fortified). The results display a total AP and total DP as a result of [normal AP&DP * Tactical Power * Terrain Bonus * Fortify Bonus]. The difference between the total AP and total DP is the damage which is dealt to whomever had the lesser total.

Assuming this has a good turnout, I'll make a separate board for these minigames. Obviously, let me know if there are any problems with the Battle Calculator, and if you think that we should change things around (if some units are too powerful, etc).

Above all, HAVE FUN! I'll see you on the battlefield. :)

Here's My Map

SCENARIO: Nation A has kidnapped Nation B's political leader and taken him to the Nation A' s capitol. The nation was put on High Alert and as such, Nation A's military is placed all over the map. Nation B's objective is to recapture their political leader before he is executed.

TIME LIMIT: Nation A can only execute Nation B's political leader after 6 consecutive turns.

TO WIN - Nation A: drive back all of Nation B's opposing forces or obtain a treaty from them.

TO WIN - Nation B: find and regain your political leader, who may be moved by Nation A around the map, and take the Sector Capitol Building under your control. You have six turns.

Nation B's Units: All units pre-set on the game map are for Nation A. Nation B may take as many units as he can fill up in 4 ships, and may also take 2 aircraft of any kind.

Map looks fine except for the fact that rivers can't go diagonally.

Well I mean, I guess for this test you could...but they're not going to be like that in game.

It's like I said above, since units can't move or attack diagonally, it would follow that rivers/roads/etc can't either.

But it's not too hard to fix your map.
