"Any sign that the bastards know we're out here?" Ennis asked, standing on the bridge of the Retiro.

"Doesn't seem like it," Gabriel responded. "We're on the far side of a different colony from them, and in any case if they've got any mobile suit forces they're not outside the colony."

"Good. Still, that means we can't kill them out here where its safe. And the nature of the situation means we can't really bring our mobile suits to bear."

"Sir, the Titans are not in the habit of negotiating with terrorists . . ."

"I have my orders, Gabriel," Ennis said, the lie coming out as smooth as glass, and just as dangerous were it to break. "But no, not with this bunch at least. I meant we'll have to go in after them on foot. Keep me notified. And remember, no outside transmissions without my say-so. Don't want information leaking out."

Ennis left the bridge, going to walk the ship one last time to see how people were doing.

Sharan brushed down the shoulders of his uniform before folding his arms behind his back and clasping his leather gloved hands together. The Axis warships kept pace with the Titans allies, holding close to the Federation Squadron but holding to their own separate formation as their weapons tracked slowly, the Danse Macabre had deployed its long-range communications dishes and dropped out of the residual minovsky field generated by the mass of vessels in transport.

Incoming long-range data burst from relay.” the bridge communication officer looked up from her station to the waiting Zeon Captain, “AEUG fleet located at Granada, exit trajectories have been provided – they appear to be accurate, Sir, confirming.” she turned back to her station and routed the information to the navigation station, “Navigation confirms, predicted course will lead them directly into Side Five space.

Sharan’s lips pulled into a Cheshire cat grin, “My my, it seems that Tirpitz is eternally damned to run into Captain Ennis no matter where he goes – Navigation, calculate an intercept course, link to the rest of the taskforce and inform all ships to correct their course onto the same lines.” he sighed,

Give me a link to the Retiro,” he snapped his fingers impatiently, “Retiro this is Captain Musharif aboard the Danse Macabre – please apologise to Captain Ennis, but our ships must part ways temporarily.

Slowly but surely, the Zeon ships began to drift out of formation.

--

Franke brushed her hair back and narrowed her eyes at the shape of Zeon ships out of one of the Retiro’s viewports as Ennis came around the corner from the bridge, the ever so slightly hungover Zeon Mercenary rising an eyebrow, “James’ please tell me it’s the remnants of the drink that’s making me see Zeon warships in our shadow.” she winced and did her best to tie back the untidy red hair,

Because otherwise, I’m going to have to strangle you for not shooting them already.” she smirked in a half-hearted fashion, still quite clearly hungover.

"I really wish it was, Franke," Ennis said, shrugging. "It's worse than you know. Sharan's their boss. Apparently I wasn't quite thorough enough after Hawaii. Seems to be my curse, 'cause the really bad ones always get away."

Ennis looked out the viewport with her for a second, watching the Zeon ships move away. He'd have to ask why later.

"Things are coming to a crossroads, I think. One way or another, our part in this story will be over in the next few months. I have a plan. The odds are long . . . but they always were," he said quietly. He paused for a moment before looking over at Franke with a grin.

"From the look of you, I'd say your boys would be impressed. What, you drink the whole stash?" he asked wryly, reaching up to pat her on the shoulder.

Kerin saw the Retiro glide silently into Side 5 airspace from his stateroom. Terrorist scum he thought, mentally cursing that bastards that were in there. Of course, the thought of actually avoiding the spacenoid hostages never even occurred to him. He wanted to just bomb the 5 target buildings and then move in with a mopup team. Of course, that soft-ass shit Ennis is probably going to consider the lives of the spacenoid trash out here more important than the destruction of the enemy... he fumed as he awaited something that resembled orders. He felt his hand drift down, and he pulled his sidearm, checking his weapon as he realized that, as a VBSS team leader during a previous tour, he'd likely be tapped for the ground element here. He smiled at that thought. One more chance to kill spacenoids up close and personal he mused as the ship continued to close.

Jurik watched as Ennis left the bridge.
“Weak fool, we should just gas the whole cylinder,” he snarled under breath. A communiqué came in from one of the Axis ships.

Franke gave Ennis a weak smile before laughing and perking up a little, “Yeah, I guess they would be…and any plans you have, you know you can trust me to back you up, right now Titan boy, you’re the last thing left I give a rats arse about keeping from ending up dead.” she smirked and stretched,

So we’ve got an undead Zeon Ace as an ally – I’m not sure how things could get much worse to be honest – unless your going to tell me that your little Internal Affairs bulldog has been promoted to Admiral or something horrific like that.” she stretched her arms behind her back and yawned pushing out her heavy chest before slumping into a much more lax posture,

So what’s going on, where are we going off to now?

Ennis couldn't help his eyes from flicking downwards for a second. At his height it was damn near impossible to avoid glancing at Franke's . . . display. But professionalism helped him snap them back up just as quick to actually look Franke in the eyes. Of course, once he started paying attention to what she was saying and not what she was doing, he actually went a little pale (oddly, he'd looked a little red beforehand) at the notion of Kerin being promoted over him.

"Ahem. No, and please don't joke about that. I've had nightmares of that happening. Yeesh," he said, faking a shudder for good measure.

"What we've got this time is some unambiguous bad guys," Ennis said, getting down to business. "That asshole AEUGer who killed Sean's family? Him and his lackeys have taken a colony cylinder hostage, making all sorts of demands about turning the whole cylinder into his personal army to fight us. We think even the AEUG will want to take this guy out. So our goal is deceptively simple, go in on foot and shoot every one of the bastards while saving the hostages, and keeping our local nutcases from killing everybody."

Gabriel shrugged at Jurik's question, looking over the communique from the Danse Macabre.

"Doesn't say. Just says that they'll be back shortly. They'd better not give away our position, or there'll be hell to pay. Even the Captain would lose his cool over that one," she said.

Kraven sat idle in the cockpit of his Barzam. Still, he had not seen any action, and he frowned a little bit as he continued to mull over combat scenarios. He was getting tired of all the simulations, they weren't really doing it for him anymore, and he was tired of staying on the side lines of this all.

Again and again, he killed the enemies in the simulations, over and over again. To the point that he'd learned new ways of dealing with certain situations. this was all fine and dandy, but it did not help him when it came to actual combat. HE was fighting computers, after all. And human beings were far more resourceful than these two bit pieces of crap.
Why threaten them? It ruins the surprise.

Once upon a time....I fired a nuke....It didn't end well...And I don't think they liked me afterwards.

It is not my mind to ask questions that cannot be answered. That is for the soul at the cross-roads of vacillation. We seek to obtain wisdom, buto nly gain a stagnation of will.

Sean

After Ennis and Orrick returned from their pow-wow with the Zeon Commander, Sean left his Dolmel. With the threat of the Axis forces taking out the chain of command gone, there was little reason for him to stay on the launch catapult and ready to launch an attack. In the meantime, Sean went about his regular duties on the ship. He heard from many members about the AEUG situation at Side 5 and how they were being dispatched to deal with it. Although everyone he spoke heard about the broadcast, no one seemed to recall the name of the person iniatating the attack. Little did Sean know that everyone on the ship intentionally didn't tell him as a way of keeping him from going out of control. The information would be disclosed in the briefing, and none of them wanted to be the bearer of bad news. Now on his lunch, Sean went to the mess hall for a sandwich, something he could eat quickly incase of an emergency.

Franke grinned at the glimpse of Ennis’ red face and then let out a chuckle as he turned pale at the image of Admiral Kerin, “Duly noted Boss, plus you know I’d finish the job on him before taking orders from a little weasel like that.” she grinned and adjusted the strap of her tank top,

Excellent news on the footwork then, well, not excellent but you know…I haven’t got a proper physical workout since I dragged your sorry arse out of that bar a couple of months back, I’m aching for a good foot fight.” she grinned, a little more psychotically than she’d ever done before, her eyes seemed odd, not depressed, not cheerful, just…full of battle lust…as if she’d suppressed all her anger from the previous few days into a need to fight.

Kerin had been reviewing what meager intel he could find on the terrorists along with what construction plans he could get of the target areas when Ennis returned. He wanted to talk to 'Captain' Ennis about how they were going to stop the scum, and headed for the bridge to do just that. However, he spotted the Zeon bitch there talking with Ennis, and he elected to exercise the better part of valor. So, the spacenoid thinks she can strike me and get away with it, does she? We'll just have to see about that... this will be a ground op... accidents happen... he mused as he headed to the hangar to run a check on his suit. Ennis is too soft to let us do the job right and just squash these terrorist insects with mobile suits. Pity. His time shall come, though Kerin mused as he inspected his ride.

Ennis silently nodded his thanks at the notion of Kerin not long surviving Ennis himself. Cold comfort, but better than nothing. Friendship was a wonderful thing. At Franke's . . . 'eagerness' he decided to call it, he just shrugged. Long as she followed the rules and kept it within limits, he wasn't going to blame her for enjoying a chance to hit the AEUG back.

"Can't say I'm exactly looking forward to it. Getting wounded hurts, I've discovered," he said, absentmindedly rubbing the shoulder that had stopped a bullet in the Cyclops. "And I've had the least success at avoiding that on the ground. On the other hand I did hang on to that shotgun and gather up a sizable number of shells for it. Who knows, maybe turning shameless bastards into meat hash will buck up my spirits a bit."

"The waiting. Always the waiting," Erol told himself at the mess hall table while he disinterestedly tapped at the game of 'TheGems' on his media player. Completing his current tasks, the tedium made entertainment a banal chore while the likelihood and anxiety of fighting the terrorists inside on foot was too distracting for him to study.

"Whaddya think, eh?" After Sean was settled in with his lunch. "Likely that we'll really have to go in," his voice cracked with a swirling mix of unease and perturbed emotion, "on foot?!"

It was something he felt was entirely not in his job description. This situation reminded him of a very old science fiction telly-show he watched when he was a child back home in Turkey. It was about space marines, who not only served as infantry but also fighter pilots which from his father's and grandfather's complaints didn't make much sense. Later, it didn't make much sense to Erol either.

But it seems the Titans or at least Helios was to be multipurpose just as those space marines were.

Later . . .

"Alright, listen up!" Ennis called out from his spot in the armory turned briefing room. "You'll get the tactical briefing when we get on-site, but right now you're going to be introduced to the tools of the trade."

Every pilot he had, and more than a few Marines, were gathered in front of a table holding a cross-section of the Retiro's firearms.

"Now, some of you have prior service on the ground. Some of you have made a habit of training in your free time," Ennis said, nodding to the veterans and then to Shin. "Quite a few more of you were in that little dust-up on Luna near the start of the war. And everyone has put in their standard time at the range with their sidearm. I hear otherwise, somebody's getting grounded."

Ennis busied himself reassembling a pistol, his own in fact, as he continued.

"Now, I'm not stupid. I know quite a few of you are a little uneasy about fighting outside of the cockpit. But that's the mission. We're the so-called elite of the Federation, so we'd damn well better act like it. And that's all I'm going to say on the matter," Ennis said, finishing by holding up the pistol for inspection. "Standard issue. Everybody's going to go in with one of these, with extra mags just in case. And unless you don't think you can handle it, you'll also pick a main weapon. Most of what we have are SMGs or rifles, but there are a few shotguns. In addition, we've some grenades. No frags, can't risk the civilians, but plenty of smoke and flash. We've also got proper body armor this time, so hopefully we can avoid a repeat of Luna."

Kerin looked up at Ennis, not one bit surprised by the man's weak attitude that the spacenoid civilians lives were more important than the destruction of the enemy. He sneered at the notion openly, not bothering to disguise his disapproval of Ennis's action. He poked his hand up. "I'd like to volunteer as a team leader, Captain. I did a tour as a VBSS team leader, so I know my way about down there" he tossed into the air, hoping that sense would prevail and that he'd draw a team so that he could do what was necessary with his team, far from the prying eyes of Ennis.
