Ens. Ibram Gaunt ((What about my shots at the Marasai?)) "Roger, lead." Ibram thrusted straight at the last Galbaldy Beta, bringing his Nemo in almost close enough to reach out and touch the other suit, but when the AI enemy brought its beam rifle up to fire Ibram juked left, letting the bright spear of energy shoot past to the other side. He hit his maneuvering jets, shooting backward a hundred feet, and put a single shot from his own beam rifle through the Galbaldy's cockpit. It was left dead in space, crackling with energy from the hole bored straight through its torso. Gaunt didn't get to see what happened next as he hit the stop command on the simulation and tossed his headset off. Ibram jumped onto the lift and then off of it when it was only halfway down, relying on the low moon gravity to cushion his fall as he went over to Chelsea's mobile suit and jumped onto the lift. He rode up to Chelsea's cockpit and input the commands for an emergency release on the cockpit hatch lock, swinging it open. He stuck his head into the panoramic motor cockpit slowly, cautiously, trying not to surprise her. "Chelsea? Hey, you alright?" |

OOC - Chronic, the assumption was Jim jumped in the second he saw she was in trouble and took care of it before you did. You have MSN? If you do, can you drop me a line on mine [on profile] Jim was a little disgusted with the way this had turned out. Ibram hadn't gotten his falsely-held pride kicked out of him, and Chelsea had broken at the sight of the enemy. He shut it down, cursing audibly. He hustled over to Chelsea's suit to see how she was doing, and found Ibram had beat him there by half a second. "I've got this Ibram." he whispered to his first pilot before telling both of them "I'll see both of you separately for a review. Ibram, you're first, fall out get yourself to the ready room. he told the young pilot, his voice booking no argument. After Ibram had left, he looked back into the cockpit, Chelsea still trembling a little. Jim climbed into her cockpit and put his hand on her shoulder. "You alright Chelsea?" he asked her after ensuring the area was clear. |

Ens. Ibram Gaunt "Just checking on my wingman, boss. We're a team, remember?" Ibram said as he stepped down out of the cockpit and back onto the lift. He smiled, laying a hand on Jim's shoulder, but the concern was evident behind his glasses. "I'll see you in the ready room. Take care of her." Gaunt pushed off of the lift, pulled a lazy flip in midair and rebounded off of the Nemo's knee before finally descending to the ground. He bounced a few times and headed off toward the pilot's ready room, his ever-present, dog-eared book once again finding its way into his hands. Once there, he settled into a comfortable chair and waited for Jim to reappear for the debrief. |

CHelsea sat in her cockpit as her teammates rushed over to her. She was almost at the brink of crying. Ibram was the first rush to her cockpit, followed quickly by Jim. "I... I think so..." Chelsea rubbed her eyes as he wiped away the forming tears. In a fake happy tone, Chelsea tried to sound braver than what she actually was. "I'm sorry everyone.... If you want we can try it again. I'll promise to try better this time." |

Downing was there watching Jim flight simulator with his team members, not as impressive as it should have been, but something tell him it more toward the problem of his wingmen than himself. While still eating his pizza, he notice the simulator training ended earlier then expected. (Just posting stuff so Downing wont be seem like missing, but not much activity around.) |

I know kid. I was there myself at A Baoa Que too. Jim thought as he recognized the forming tears and the bravado Chelsea was putting up. She told him she wanted to try again. "Not right now, Chelsea. I wanna talk to both you and Ibram separately for a bit. Get yourself cleaned up and meet me on the mess deck in about twenty. I'll talk to Ibram first, then meet you there. See you in a few" Jim said as he left her cockpit and headed to the Ready Room. Seeing Ibram there, he asked him "She's OK. What did you think of that sim, Ibram?" |

Ens. Ibram Gaunt "I think we all would have died." Gaunt grinned good-naturedly as he put the brown-paged, dog-eared copy of Animal Farm on the table in front of him and stood up when his squad leader entered the pilot's ready room. He snapped off a quick salute, but held it until Jim gestured for him to be at ease. "The Quells were pretty basic, though they picked us up coming out of the sun a little too fast I think. Must have seen one of our thruster firings on their sensor reads, or picked us up way before we even had a chance to drop in, but Chelsea had some great shooting so we salvaged that first run pretty well. The second wave I thought we'd have no problem with, but Chelsea had her meltdown so I just tried to keep them off of her." Ibram reported. "Sir, I know this isn't exactly my place to say, but do you think she's going to break apart like that in combat, sir? If she doesn't have her head together she should probably stay home or a lot of us aren't going to come back." he added regretfully. He didn't know Chelsea, but he could tell she wasn't a bad person, so it made him uncomfortable broaching the subject. Still, he'd be remiss in his duties if he didn't at least talk about it with Jim. |

Kid's got good instincts for people as well as flying. Jim thought, smiling a little as he heard Ibram's response. "She'll be OK, Ibram. Not the first case of a nugget getting scared I've seen, and it won't be the last. I'll take care of her, and if I don't think she can handle it, you'll know. She's still shook up from her first combat, that's all." Jim told him. He then started studying the kid's face, watching carefully for his reaction as he prepared to tell the kid what was what. "And yes, Chelsea did handle herself well in that first fight. You, however, are something I've seen before. You aren't the first with this issue, and you won't be the last. Your instructors weren't messing around when they made you the top grad, and I can see why. You've got as much potential as any pilot I've ever seen, Ibram. But that's all it is right now: potential. You think that potential is as good as skill, and you're trying to fly like you're better than you are. You have some skill, but you lack the poise and control that comes with experience. Don't push the envelope too far. I've seen too many rookies over my ten years on the line get themselves killed doing that. Understood, Ensign?" Jim told his new guy. |

Ens. Ibram Gaunt "Yes, sir. Thank you, sir." Ibram said, but looked a little puzzled, as if he wasn't sure how well the question he was about to ask was going to be received. He decided to ask it anyway. "Ensign, I realize that pulling a half-assed stunt could get me killed in real combat, but how am I supposed to become a better pilot if I don't push myself to my limit and stay in my comfortable zone? I know the theory, the technical specs, the way everything is supposed to be working when in combat, but if I don't get my instincts up to par, be able to feel it out I'll never be able to keep up with the veterans. I believe the only way I can do that is by pushing my envelope. Excuse me, sir, but no one ever became an ace pilot by playing it safe. As long as I don't endanger my comrades I would think trying to push past my perceived limits would be encouraged." |

"You're right to say that you need to push the envelope. But just over the edge, NOT off the reservation trying to pull moves like I saw you trying in there. I may be only an Ensign here, but two years ago it was Lieutenant Commander, and I was about to take my own air group. But life had... different plans for me. You listen, and listen good. In the sims, you can get away with pushing it that far beyond your skill envelope. But you push it that far when the lead's flying, and I'll end up sending flowers to your mother. It's a delicate knife edge you have to walk between pushing it and playing it safe, Ibram. Right now you're pushing it too far." Jim paused, glad the kid was aggressive, but worried he was too much so. "Every pilot starts his career with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the experience bag before you empty the luck bag. Keep pushing this hard, and your luck will run out before you fill up on experience. I don't want to see that happen." Jim paused again, thinking about what to do next. "Lieutenant LeNoir thinks his Beta squad can outdo us. I want to prove him wrong. Grab some rack time, but I want you in the sims with me in six hours for a little personal training with me. You want to fly like that, I'll teach you, but you gotta listen to me. Understood, Ensign?" Jim asked, hoping to give the kid the drive to succeed. |

Chelsea had climbed out of her cockpit and jumped down to the ground. Since the changing room was closer than her room, she headed in there instead. She threw several splashes of water on her face. After several splashes of water she left the room and walked back out into the hangar, calmer than before. She started to head towards Jim and Ibram, as she got closer Ibram walked away. "Is he leaving because I'm coming back? I know I froze up, but I did better than I did last time." She said to Jim after Ibram left. |

Ens. Ibram Gaunt Gaunt chose not to interrupt with the information that his mother died during the first week of the One Year War when their colony depressurized since Jim was on a roll. It was a minor detail for this conversation anyway. "Sir, I can only promise that I will do nothing consciously to endanger the mission or my comrades. Walking that knife edge is going to have to be up to me." he grinned a little, optimistic to the last. "As for Beta Squad, I think we should send them home crying. I'll see you in six hours." he nodded, eager at the thought of some one on one training. It would in all likelihood be brutal, but Gaunt was still eager to show his mettle to the veterans, and this was his chance to show Jim what he could really do. He doubted very much there was anything he could pull off to make Jim think of him as anything more than a nugget, but he'd try his damnedest. On the way out, he saw Chelsea coming back from the changing rooms. Her hair was a little wet, so she had probably been treating her experience like waking up from a nightmare; splashing cold water on her face to shock her back to reality. He gave her a warm smile over the brim of his ever-present book as they passed each other and headed toward his quarters to get some sack time. |

Jim smiled to himself as Ibram walked off. Maybe he isn't as bad as I thought, but I still gotta break him down a notch. He's still got damn fine instincts, though, and has the makings of a good brawler-style fighter. With Chelsea as the shootist and me as the rabbit, we may have something going here. he thought as Chelsea walked up to him. "Walk with me" he told her as he pulled her into the ready room, propping the 'Brief in progress - do not disturb' sign up as he closed the door. "Chelsea, what was that all about in there? Please, tell me. I promise I won't do anything but try and help you" he asked the young woman. |

Chelsea looked down feeling a bit uncomfortable about having to explain why she froze up. "Well... Ensign. It was in that fight I was in. This Titan who had taken one of the Marasai's came up in front of Eddy, then after a small discussion he came at me. I was so scared, I could barely block his saber. Then he didn't even focus on me in the fight, he turned his attention to Eddy, while he was parrying with me." Chelsea was starting to get upset again as she told Jim the story. |

Jim had no choice but to offer a warm smile to Chelsea as he gave her a pat on the back before a more contemplative look adorned his face. You were rattled after your first firefight. Nothing to be ashamed of, Chelsea. We all get scarfed out there. I am every time I go out there. Hell, my first firefight en route to A Baoa Qu I almost shit myself. Caught hell for that from the vets for weeks too, let me tell you..." he chuckled. Adopting a more serious look, he continued "Its OK to be scared, Chelsea. A pilot without fear is a pilot about to die. Fear is a warning. It tells you when you need to back off, when not to push a bad position. But you have to master your fear, not let it master you. You have the skills. Those shots you took in the first round against the Quels were marvelous. You've got the makings of a fine pilot and a damn good shooter, you just need to master your fear." Jim told her. Now, let's get her cheered up, then see what I can do about getting this relationship a lot more intimate than just mentor-student Jim thought, hoping he had what it took to woo her. |
