I just found out that there are texts listing the materials for helmets a thousand years earlier than the ones from Nuzi, from the age of Sargon of Akkad and Naram-Sīn. I don't have time to copy them, but you can find a German translation in the Reallexikon der Assyriologie entry for "Helm A. Philologisch." They are things like 1 2/3 minas of bronze and 10 shekels of silver for a bronze helmet, or 1 oxhide, 1 goathide, and 1/3 mina wool for a leather helmet. |

Wow! Very interesting.. I have to see more of those texts! That sounds about right for a leather helmet with a lot of wool padding. |
