I am working on completing a tenth century BCE Israelite warrior's kit--or, actually, all the basic Israelite weapons of the time. I am beginning research on Israelite bows, and am having trouble isolating which style of bow would have been common in the region at the time. I've attached a picture of some ancient styles--has anyone come across any reliable information as to which of these might be the most likely? |

Welcome to BAC! This could be a tough one. I don't know of any bows from that period discovered in Israel or iconographic evidence for such. Others here are more knowledgeable of that time and place and so may know of such. I think your best bet would be to look at the iconographic evidence from Assyria and Egypt of the time. Both had much influence on Palestine during that period, so the odds are the weapons used would have been similar if not identical. There are also the bows discovered in Tut's tomb. They are centuries before your period, but it's likely bows did not change much over the centuries. Keep in mind those were the bows of a chariot warrior and a foot soldier, especially if you're thinking of an Israelite militia man rather than a professional soldier, probably would have had a simplier and cheaper bow, that is to say a self bow rather than a composite. |
