It's true that none of them appear to overlap. Overlapping of any kind of armour plate, scale or other seems to be a Middle Eastern or ANE thing.

There are very very few examples of any kind of metal armour that does not involve overlapping plates. This is why I have problems with the reconstructions of the Thebes armour.

Now THAT is cool! Extremely well done. Even if slightly speculative, though I think you've conceived it perfectly, it is certainly well represented in images from or around the period! Very well done. And it certainly looks the part. There is no doubt that this represents a helmet from before the iron age.

Thank you Thank you! It was definitely a pain in the butt to make, but I'm happy with it.

Do you have a pattern for the inside, or better yet a work in progress? I think we need a forum specifically for WIP. That would greatly aid everybody in their endeavors.

Hi Chris,
I thought about publishing an online manual about how to make scale helmets and disk helmets, but have been to busy with other projects. I can provide instructions if you or anyone would like them. The measurements have to be pretty exact in the parts for everything to work. Essentially you have to get the measurement around your head at the brow, add 1.5 inches to that, divide by eight and create eight separate sloping triangles for the bowl of the helmet out of leather (the slope of the triangles is very important, as are their measurements. punch matching holes all along the edges of those eight sections. Then you need to use one of the sloping triangular sections cut from cardboard and create a liner from two or four layers of natural linen, by using a laundry pencil and drawing eight contiguous sloping triangles and cutting them out as one piece from the linen. Sew the liner together with linen thread, and anchor it to the leather liner through it's sewing holes.... Haven't even gotten to the part on how to measure the scales / disks!!

An online manual would be amazing (when you have the time), but yes I would very much like your instructions! I'm trying to find the best way to get the basic leather bowl of a helmet made, then I can add the metal/ boar tusks on top of it later.
Thanks again,
Chris
