Hello
Here is one of my latest illustration:
http://community.imaginefx.com/fxpose/jp_v...cture30728.aspx
It depicts a combat between early arabs and assyrian.
I know it is a late to be bronze age, but I hope you enjoy it.
Best regards to all

PS: do you think the arrow will find its target?

Nice Photoshop work! So you rendered these from scratch without taking pictures of models?

Hello
Many thanks for all your commentaries.
Todd: I inspired myself on a famous illustrations by Angus McBride, depicting these same characters; however I reverse the action. I made some pencil sketches to study the figures position and composition.
After the drawing was finished I loaded to Photoshop and started painting it.
Again may thanks to all.
Cheers

Hello
Thanks for the replies.
There is evidence of early Arabs fighting this way in Assyrian bas-reliefs.
Does anyone know of other sources for the early Arabs armies (and their composition)?
Best regards

You might try looking up "Arab" and "Arabian" in Herodotus. There is a text online with the Perseus Project. Htd. 7.69 discusses the Arabian troops who were part of Xexex' levy of the empire, for example. Since most of those miscellaneous troops probably never fought in the invasion of Greece, I think he doesn't know much about their tactics, and like almost all ancient authors he isn't kind enough to give a breakdown of troop types in a 'typica'l army.

Hello
some of the research so far tends to show the early Arab armies with limited and outdate equipment (when compared to their neighbours).
Is this a correct assessment?
Cheers

Well, down to the time of the Arab Conquests Arab arms seem to have been relatively simple. They used composite bows, short straight swords and daggers, and some traded armour and other weapons at that time, according to David Niccole. My general impression has been that the tribes of northern Arabia were relatively poor and simply armed (although desert Arabs might be different from steppe Arabs). Arabia has few natural resources, other than oil and the spices of the south, which would also suggest cheap weapons.

Hi
early Arab armies do seem to have little equipment. however I only know (for this period) sources from their enemies (as the assyrian bas-reliefs) and that could be a bit misleading.
a bit off topic but...my work can now be seen online at http://community.imaginefx.com/fxpose/jp_v...io/default.aspx.
Hope you enjoy it.
best regards
