projecting sound.. hmm.. one thing u need to do is to use more air.. another thing to do is to think about projecting the sound.. for example.. if you are playing the tuba, imagine there is an airplane flying above you in the sky.. try to push the sound towards the plane and remember not to blast.. use alot alot of air.. think about expanding the sound and making it bigger at e same time.. for a clarinet, think tt the bell is e torchlight.. and try to shine the light on the floor as big as possible..

so the point is that it's all in the mind and u just have to think about it.. and then let your body do the work.. this makes the mind very powerful and u can do just about anything you want..

good luck! Handsup(dude)

i learn that there is one practices that may help in improving stamina for brass players only =/

try doing this everyday, breath out all the air... then breath in as much air as possible till your lungs are full for about 8 seconds, then breath out all the air for 8 seconds. do it 3 times, then breath in for 8 second, breath out on 5 seconds, then start breathing in for 5 sec and breath for 5 sec, breath in for 5 sec and breath out for 3 sec, breath in for 3 sec and breath out for 3 sec, breath in 3 sec and breath out 1 sec, and finally breath in for 1 sec and breath out for 1 sec, so on and so for.

then try buzzing into your mouthpieces doing the same things. quite troublesome but that's why all my masterclass teacher taught me.

Sorry, if you don't understand what i mean because it's better to use speech to explain.

ya i think my instructor taught us dis method the other day... :P

there are lots(x100) of different methods and techniques around that are proven useful. Just go into the internet and search. For eg if you're a trumpeter, type : Trumpet Techniques etc.. and you'll be returned with lots of useful links. then again, it boils down to patience and alot of practice.

Good luck in improving your techniques! B)

i was taught how to project by some Thailand university band conductor. he would find a spot in the music studio and asked everyone to aim at just one spot. anywhere, at wall in front of us. it had to be at or above eye level tho. and he asked us to play a note, aiming at the spot we chose.

this made our air more focus and focused air is easier to project.
one misconception about projection is that projction=loud. it isn't. there's this music teacher who played on the clarinet and asked his student to go out of the room to see whether he could hear him. the student could, even when he was playing at ppp. that is projection. the ability to let ur sound travel at whatever dynamic. and it definitely doesn't mean bigger sound.

newayyyy... my clarinet teacher taught me to start breathing frm below my chest, everywhere i go, wadever i do, even when i'm sleeping. u kno when we breathe normally our shoulders would move but he wants to train me to breathe like i'm playing my clarinet (through my mouth)

i guess this is pretty good cos u'll be like practicing long notes 24/7 and ur air capacity wld definitely expand.

don't do it when you're crossing the road tho. u wldnt want dust and fumes in ur lungs. :D

**wadever mentioned above may not be entirely true, but it's what i've been taught. just thought i'll share wad i learnt**

yeah.. there is one way to check and to ensure the method of breathing is correct.. well.. actually my conductor taught me this.. however u need sum1 to help u do this.. the person being checked must be standing against a wall, with the back facing the wall.. the helper places his hand on the stomach, and exerts some pressure onto the stomach.. the person being tested would then put his mouthpiece into the mouth and breathe in..(like how one would while playing music, breathe in fast and quick).. his stomach should exert a force greater than the pressure exerted from his helper's hand, thus forcing the hand to be pushed back.. this can be done lying down also..

for the seating position, a helper need not be necessary.. just do the same as above while sitting upright.. =))

good luck! Handsup(dude)

Yup. i had a tutor who did something similiar.

He would place the tip of an umbrella at my stomach and ask me to breathe in. If i'm doing correctly, i will be the one 'pushing' him instead of the other way round.

He repeated this when i'm playing on the trumpet too.

it gives you an idea of how the 'right way' works :)

erm, my conductor told us to all lie down, on the floor is the best, breathe 4 in 4 out, 4 in 8 out, 4 in 16 out etc, with the diaphram. Then use your mouthpiece and do 4 in 4, out 4 in 8 out, 4 in 16 out, 8 in 8 out, 8 in 16 out etc...its helps :D
