YOU ASSHOLES

I AM SURE YOU ARE INDIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR ME GETTING SUCKED INTO LOST

POSSIBLY

I was dissing Lost to some people and then I felt bad, I was like "I don't have the right, I haven't really given the show a chance by watching more than parts of the odd episode. Why don't I just watch the first episode and see how it is?" This was a regret that I'm sure you guys put in my brain by liking Lost in the past. Or something.

And now I've watched the entire first season and am starting on the second. I'll probably watch all 100 episodes within weeks.

It's a really great show, so I don't regret becoming addicted, but still. I should've known this was going to happen.

WHY DIDN'T YOU WARN ME

lol, 1st and 2nd season are so boring compared to the next 2-3 seasons.

Good news is you don't have to wait 6-12 months between seasons like we did. And I guess more warning would have been acceptable, but you know...we wanted you to watch it. :P

Good for you, Chalocks! As far as high quality television shows go, Lost is definitely in the upper tier when you watch it all at once like that, as there are simply so many varying facets involved with the show that the only way to really appreciate it is to expose yourself to them all at once. I'm glad you gave it a chance and are enjoying it, but do be prepared for it to just get stranger and stranger - this past season (number 5) was perhaps the weirdest thing to ever air on serious T.V., though I'm sure you can really appreciate that. =3

I just watched that entire episode. Corny and cliche'd in some parts, but quite well-written and a VERY interesting concept! It probably didn't help at all that I just watched Galaxy Quest the other night, but I still really enjoyed it. I may be jumping the gun here a bit, but I'm slightly-seriously considering watching more.

lol, I shall have to watch that movie sometime. :hehe:

Yes, Star Trek can be a tad cliche at times, however they always turn old ideas into something new by the end of the episode. I allow them the benefit of the doubt as you can't be not cliche with over 700 episodes across 5 seasons. P:

What separates Star Trek from the other Sci-Fi space shows is that it's more of a dialogue show, involving complex characters, and their faults, and exploring them. As a result of this though the first seasons can be a little bit of a let down as the writers have yet to master the characters completely, and of course as you watch them over time, your attachment to them grows, making the stories more powerful after about the 2nd season.

In other news I watched part of a Land of the Lost marathon on Sci-Fi. :blink!: Now that is bad TV.

Indeed, all shows can be cliche at times. Even though I haven't actually watched much of Star Trek at all, I'd give it a huge excuse in such regard in that it really created a lot of those cliche's which are now mainstream in Scienece Fiction. And I certainly love shows which focus more on dialogue, characters, and their reactions to interesting scenarios. Though 700 episodes across 5 seasons... how does that work? o.0 Do you mean 5 seperate shows, with multiple seasons themselves?

As for Galaxy Quest, its a pretty ordinary and silly film which has its moments, but isn't anything spectacular. I'm sure it'd be great to watch as a fan of Star Trek, though, as you could likely appreciate a lot of the satire more than I. ^.^

Concerning Land of the Lost... that basically epitomizes much of what I hate about mainstream Hollywood. I'll leave it at that.

And to get this back on the topic of Lost itself... I just finished rewatching the first season with my mom! I forgot how WTFAWESOME the first season's finale was. The last scene of them all boarding the plane with the quiet Lost music going was spectacularly moving. Then it of course ended with them peering down the blown open hatch, which is one of the worst cliff-hangers ever, but hey! (Okay, maybe not worse than Season 5's ending with Juliette... that was pretty evil ^.^)

I'm in the middle of the 2nd season now. My favorite cliffhanger so far was Jin running toward Mike and Sawyer shouting "others" and then you get an extremely quick shot of the tail section people wielding clubs. Even though now I know it wasn't that much dangerous... *shivers*

And the last scene of the first season, boarding the plane, was indeed extremely moving. It was bittersweet because everyone was so unhappy with their personal problems, but you knew that most of these problems had been resolved on the island over the course of the season.

In fact, it's probably why I like the show - it manages to tread that fine line between many different qualities: creepy (the cliffhangers), tragic and emotional (moments like the end of Locke's first episode, extremely beautiful), hilarious (Hurley's first episode), and philosophically intriguing (I don't really know whether I would push the button or not! AHHH!). Also the music is amazing. (There's a recurring 'walking-through-the-jungle' theme that is some of the best incidental music I've ever heard - and it actually gets DEVELOPED later in the series! Woooah! [/musicnerd])

Anyway, if you like that and Star Trek I recommend Doctor Who, a show that (in the recent revival, anyway) also treads the line between creepy, tragic, funny, and philosophical. The premise is that The Doctor, the last of the alien Time Lords, wanders through space and time in his spaceship shaped like a phone box, taking random 'companions' on adventures with him. The show started out in the 60s, and is still going on because the Doctor can regenerate his body into a different form on death, allowing many actors (10 so far) to put their own take on the quirky, lonely character.

Check out "The Girl In the Fireplace" at a weird video site that's the only place I could find it... http://www.livevideo.com/video/7ACC7C68F2954E52964303141B68EC93/dr-who-the-girl-in-the-firepl.aspx

... and "Blink" is some of the best television I've ever seen. (though since this episode diverges from the usual episode format, you probably want to watch the other one first) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UFWlrmlS-E

Sorry, yes 700 episodes across 5 series. :hehe:

As for Lost, my favorite Cliffhanger by far was the last one, with Juliette...DAMNIT IT ALL TO ****ING HELL!!!! It's so bad you can't even be sure what happened happened...>_> I also like the one with the awesome "marching music" when large groups of people are marching along the beach somewhere. And Locke tells someone something, and that someone just stares into the distance as all the people are walking by, and you're like 'da ****?'

Damn trying not to spoil.

:offtopic: Dr. Who seems to linear so I haven't been able to jump in, it seems like something like Lost that has a story with a begining a middle and a end.

Wow. o.0 I just watched the Dr. Who episode "Blink", and your endorsement wasn't at all exagerrated. I'd heard great things about the show, but never actually seen any of it, and I have to say that I now want to watch it all in its entirety, because that was simply stunning. The character of the Doctor himself was wonderfully quirky and unique (ya gotta love those Brits!,) the concept of the episode was incredibely unique, and the whole idea behind the angels and his philosophy of time really resonated well with me (I've always loved the idea of time being a big ball of string consisting of one single strand endlessly spun around, where everyone exists in singular parallel tangent to all others, and that's basically what he described, minus the "wobbly bits.") And that final image of the angels all trapped in a circle staring at each other... eerie. ^.^ The first episode you linked to was intriguing, though I couldn't find any additional parts past the first 8 minutes on that site. Thank you for sharing! Watch it Peter, because it is amazing.

So uhh... yah, Lost. I had wanted to discuss it a lot further, but honestly, what's the point? =P Great show, wonderful cliff-hangers and plot, outstanding music, blah blah. I want to watch more Dr. Who!

Oh, and before I forget, since this thread seems to have turned into a catch-all discussion for great television shows and I have yet to plug my own personal favorite (you can't stop the flow!,) have some links to Northern Exposure! Its not as serious or mind-numbing as something like Lost, but I will adamantly stand by my claim that it is the greatest show to every truly represent humanity, in all of its virtues, faults, quirks, and everything in between.

Northern Lights

All Is Vanity

(- Do note that both of these links are only a few minutes long, as Youtube doesn't have full episodes of the show, nor can I find it anywhere else. As such, they are the closing, cathartic scenes from the end of the episodes, and thus robbed of a lot of their power since you don't get the rest of the story, but hey, take what you get, right?)
And Chris, the one giving the speeches in both of the clips, is easily my favorite character in anything, ever. Period.

Yep, Dr. Who is pretty great! So is Lost! (I think this thread is becoming a great-TV-discussion thread until Lost comes back.)

So yeah, I've heard great things about Northern Exposure, and the premise is pretty appealing. And now that you've recommended it and shared some clips that are pretty great even without the context, I'll definitely have to rent it or something soon.

So I don't know if I've mentioned it here, but The Prisoner is really great. It's a show from the 60s that only ran for a single 17-episode season and was intended as a complete work (possibly a first on TV, foreshadowing shows like Lost that were intended for you to see the whole thing). The great Patrick McGoohan produced and starred in it, as well as being in charge of the story and writing several episodes himself. The premise is that an unnamed man, after resigning from an unknown organization, finds himself in "The Village", an elaborate, bizarre prison whose mysterious warders want to find out why he resigned.

Don't expect "Number Six" to ever be named, though - the show is above all a philosophical allegory about freedom and individualism and such things, and it culminates in an intense, bizarre, and awesome finale that raises more questions than it answers. Anyway, it's my kind of show. I recommend it.

And guess what? It's being remade with James Cavaziel as 6 and Ian McKellan as 2, and you can see all the original episodes online! I recommend the first episode and "Checkmate" to get a feel for it, I also recommend using the "6 of 1" episode order (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Prisoner_episodes) if you want to watch the series all the way through.

Indeed, Dr. Who has been on my mind a lot since last night, though I can't find it anywhere except Youtube, and, frankly, I hate watching serious things on Youtube!

As for discussing Lost, it'll be nearly a year until the final season, but at least you're watching the series at the moment, so we can still discuss it as you go through it. I'm really waiting for your reaction to how strange the show becomes in season 3; after all, the first two seasons are quite different from the direction the show has taken since then. I find it has gotten even better, though people like my sister (who cared more for the personal drama of the characters rather than the wacky, psychological mysteries thrust onto them,) hate the show now.

Concerning Northern Exposure, it truly is an amazingly solid series which covers an unbelievable amount of ground considering the premise. (Which is that a New York doctor fresh out of Med school is forced to spend the next four years of his life as the only physician in Cicely, Alaska, a small town of about 800 people nestled in "suburbian Anchorage," or in the middle of wilderness a few hundred miles from anything. In case Peter is actually reading this far, I mean.) The best thing about it, though, is just how thoroughly it covers philosophy, psychology, culture, and human interaction as they apply to every situation - its truly a show that will teach you while entertaining you.

As for The Prisoner, it does sound quite interesting. Anything that old and mysterious (which requires thorough analysis to properly watch the episodes in,) and is being remade in modern day must certainly warrant some attention. AMC has really been stepping up these past few years; Breaking Bad is a remarkably fresh and dark show, Mad Men has garnered a lot of attention and renown (though I have yet to watch it), and now they're remaking what looks to be a real gem. I've bookmarked it and shall watch it sometime soon. ^.^
