For up to a week. Mainly because addiction to it is kind of preventing me from doing some things I want to do.But I'll definitely be back. You have until 8:00 tonite to convince me otherwise and/or tell me anything you want me to do before I go! (Like: Give an Explanation.) |

Err, an explanation would be alright. Basically I think you should do whatever you want to, its your life and you choose how to live it, nobody else can do that for you, nor should they have a great influence on you. If a break is what you need (I imagine you mean from everything else, as you havn't really done much on BAN
), then, by all means, take it. I personally don't see how it could really help much, as the internet is something you can'y very well leave for a few days and reutrn to, at least if you are involved in many places. You either have to stay or quit, because leaving for a small period of time will just make it even worse when you return, for there will be even more for you to catch up on. Of course, this is just me rambling and thinking about it from my perspective. Basically I think you should do what you want to do. If a break is what you think will make you happier, then you don't even need to ask us. But the heads up is nice, as would a small explanation, if nothing more than to indulge our cueiosity. Oh, and what is with the new account? |

First of all: WTF?! Okay, I know this is later than expected, but something came up. I am leaving after the next post after this post (which will be just for fun), and we'll see just how long I last in my Break From The Internet! Explanation: I have developed an addiction to the internet to the point where I am always either reloading the same group of sites again and again to see if anything's changed, or jumping from site to site on a pointless quest for information (surfing) that rarely has any positive result. I'd rather be spending my time working on my reading (especially since I'm in the middle of about 6 books right now- yikes!), running (I have to get in better shape), 'riting (I really have a lot of good ideas to write about, and want to improve my skills, but all my creativity has been worn out by time on the Infamous Internet), and relationships. Okay, probably not that last one, with the way my social life has been going for quite some time. (Alternate last word- "rutting", but I figured that was a bit obscure. We can't all be zoologists.)So yeah, that's my explanation. Rest assured that I will be back, and likely with a vengeance! To tide you over until then, I'll tell you about my wonderful time at GenCon. So my family were in the general area anyway, as I have relatives in Wisconsin. This is how I justify going to GenCon each year. :-P After spending a while in Wisconsin, me and my dad packed up and drove off to Indianapolis. The first day there was really only a first afternoon, as we had to get all set up, so I couldn't do much except play in three different Magic drafts, getting prizes (however small) in each one. The second day was more exciting, as I was able to discover Wizards' excellent new game Dreamblade. Dreamblade is like a collectable miniatures game, but has very interesting elements. For one thing, it's played on a board, and territory control and tactics are a huge part of the game, making it seem more like Chess or Shogi than traditional miniatures or card games. Also, the miniatures (which are very good-looking, though pre-painted) have their abilities on the bottom, saving the annoying element of looking at a separate card that most minis games incorporate. All Wizards games have an element of resource control, and Dreamblade is no exception. Each round, dice are rolled both to determine who will go first that round and determine the number of spawn points each player gets: each player gets to spawn figures in their back rank equal to the number of spawn points, with bonuses in many cases. This slow deployment is the main thing that sets Dreamblade apart from other minis. It's a great game, and I highly recommend it. So on the second day, I learned to play Dreamblade, and explored the main convention hall, which is a testament to GenCon's awesomeocity. It has to be seen to be believed! I sampled all sorts of games, got all sorts of free stuff, bought all sorts of not-so-free stuff, and basically had a grand ol' time. The icing on the cake was the couple of live Celtic bands that were playing in a side hall. Very skilled people, very good music. And the little pattern of frosting that goes over the icing and makes the cake even more appealing was that I got to meet Andrew Looney! Founder of Looney Labs! Inventor of Fluxx, Icehouse, and all sorts of things! I even beat him at one of his own games. Also, the fact that Looney Labs holds awesome Werewolf tournaments each night would be reason enough to go to Gencon by itself! The group of birthday candles stuck into the frosting, ruining the experience by dripping wax onto your formerly-perfect cake and by reminding you how old you are, would have to be the fact that the main hall closed at 6 PM each night. This only meant more Dreamblade and Werewolf, though, so I guess the candles were trick candles and indirectly added to the fun! The third day was a big one. You may have seen ads for Dreamblade tournaments offering real money. Well, Saturday featured the huge kickoff tournament for the game. It was Sealed form, and oh man, it was huge! I think that there were more than 600 people by one count. I did pretty well early on in the rounds, but I had a string of losses as I got tired and hungry. Cash prizes went to the top 100 competitors, but I decided to drop out. There were about 200 people left, and the fact that it was estimated to last till midnight meant that I would probably have a good shot at prizes as people dropped out, but as I said, it was estimated to last till midnight. And it started at ten in the morning. So, after one final tour of the grounds, I headed back to the hotel. The fun wasn't over yet, as my gamer cousins were also there. We did an Invasion draft and other stuffs. It was fun. Around 3 AM, it was finally time to go to sleep, and sleep I did. Unfortunately (this is the part when the cake catches fire and is ruined right after your first, tantalizing bite), I had to be woken up at 9 o'clock in the bloody morning to get ready to leave. I was tired as hell, if hell were really tired. The situation was not helped by the fact that the last of my six hours of sleep couldn't even be counted as sleep, as my dad was stomping about and trying to wake me up from 8 on, keeping me in a horrid state of half-sleep. To make matters worse, we could've stayed for another day of GenCon if we really wanted to. I absolutely hate traveling, so the subsequent long car ride back to Milwaukee was terrible. (Meeting my relatives again offered one small slice that had survived the fire.) We spent the night in Wisconsin, but I was woken up at a horrid hour once again and we went off to the plane ride from hell. By the time the taxi had taken us on a bumpy ride from the airport to home at last, I felt as if not only had the flaming cake burned the house down, but the fire had been misinterpreted by the government as the result of a government-sponsored terrorist bombing, causing them to drop nuclear weapons on Iran and Korea, which violated Geneva and plunged the world into WWIII, a war that would wipe out fully 7/8 of all humanity and cause most of the world to be soaked in radiation. Seriously, I hate traveling. It took me a few days to recover, but I eventually came back to the Internet and life. It seemed I had survived by hiding in New Zealand, which was now a fertile paradise. But perhaps the cold turkey separation from the Internet caused my addiction that I am now trying to stop by leaving. I guess the post-war world was barbaric and brutal, and I decided to start civilization anew. Or something like that. I think my analogy is breaking down. I should've stuck with the cake. So anyway, I'm leaving. I'll be back. Until next time... G'night, BAN.

Your analogies are crude and barbaric! or really to the point. Sounds like fun, I'd love to go to an industries signature convetion, but less E3 is no more, and GenCon is really not my thing as I"m only interesting in Magic really.:( |

First of all, your analogies were great, and not only fit perfectly (or horribly, either way), but were entertaining and a post in themself. But another example to add to the long list of great writing you have produces. Definetely focus on writing! Second; I'm glad you had a fun time at GenCon and with your relatives. I'm kind of like Peter in that I'm only really interested in Magic, but your description of Dreamblade and everything else (plus the cake analogy ) really made me interested. Not that I ever oblige my interests in other avenues than my own imagination, but interested nonetheless. Sorry you hate travelling so much (thats the best part to me ), but at least you had a good time at Gencon!Third; Hah, you think thats an addiction!? My friend, you don't know the definition of addiction. I practically live at my computer, and get up only to indulge neccessary aspects of living. My brother actually comments when he sees me (but thats because he is exactly the same way with his computer ). And I don't even switch between that many websites, and I certainly never surf. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if my refresh button broke (not that thats plausible) from BAN alone. Of course I have no qualms with doing other activities, but everything else is just so boring to me. I guess its all perspective, though, so I hope your sojourn is effective, and that the withdrawals dont cause any permanent detriment.

I couldn't help making one more post before I go.
1. Thanks! 3. Okay, whatever. I am cutting myself off because I don't want to become like you. 2. Even if you are only interested in Magic, Gencon is tons of fun. Here are some things you can do: -Play Magic -Look at all the wacky costumes -Play constructed Magic -Get tons and tons of free stuff, some of it interesting, some of it not -Play Magic drafts -Get serious discounts from the many, many vendors exhibiting -Play Sealed Magic -Meet authors such as R.A. Salvatore, Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, etc. -Play Magic in a room full of hundreds of other Magic enthusiasts -Meet artists such as Donato Giancola, Tim Hildebrandt, Ed Beard Jr., etc. -Trade, sell, or buy your Magic cards in a room full of vendors and fellow traders -Meet other celebrities such as George Takei, Gary Gygax, Sean Astin, etc. -Play Magic? -Test different games, if you get desperate -Listen to live music -Be in a huge community of gamers, who are seriously some of the nicest people around, and help to overrun this ordinary town with our ilk. Dine at really nice restaurants as ordinary people glance at you oddly. Grin back at them, as if to say, "This is totally the most awesome thing ever!" -Play Magic! Seriously, if at all possible, it's something you should do at least once in your life. And with that, I bid you adieu. Check out MaRo's column, by the way. It's a great read, especially if it's your LAST READ ON THE INTERNET! G'night.

Well...GenCon is great and all that, and I'd go if I had the opportunity but I'd much rather go to a gaming convention, press people get free stuff...like I know a person who got a free Nintendo DS, and got to play RE4 a year before release...and it was required for him to go becuase he managed a Gamestop...now that is kick ass...anyways enough about me. I can only imagine what it's like when you two meet syko. "Oh, you? You still live here? Didnt' you just graduate from someplace?" "Yeah." "Cool, see you whenever." Works for either of you too. |

It's pretty self-explantory if you can't understand that you may have to go back to Elementary school.

Or maybe your conception of easy to understand may be so unimaginably skewed from your extra years of elementary school that you might just have to graduate from it.
