An anthem has been born for Aquila. Born of inspiration, born of history, born of pride and honor. Those of you who have been following the thread 'Panzer songs', in Open Discussion, have seen something important, whether you know it or not. I hope you all have a chance to listen to the version from the movie of the 60s. While a few versions exist on the Internet, this is the one that captures the soul of Aquila. Try reading the words as you listen to the music and the voices, singing in German, of dignity, pride and honor. http://www.homepurchaseprogram.com/panzerlied.html -or- http://www.pzg.biz/cd200_panzer_marches.htm Some songs have deep messages, and I think this is one of them, specially attuned to our particular slice of the world. I believe this new version of the lyrics to be inspiring, as it encompasses what we try to teach and live in this forum. I'd like to take a moment of your time to explain it further. Lyric: "I swear on my life, no dishonor, no shame". Translation: I will not lie, I will not cheat, I will not compromise my honor or integrity, for they are the highest values a human being can aspire to. Music: A single voice begins, joined swiftly by his comrades, standing together through triumph and adversity. "I'll carry the fight, till I go down in flame". I may be defeated, but I will never retreat or give up, for to surrender in one area is to surrender in all areas. The band starts to be heard, with an evident, 'marching' rhythmic bass, as the intensity and solidarity of the singers is evidenced. "And if I die in battle, there is no higher honor I could name". If I am to no longer be here, I am content, for to die while defending my home, my people, my country, is the greatest honor I can ever be allowed. The climax of the verse, with the clarion call of the trumpets, it is the emphatic assertion of our determination and fire, as well as a tribute to our fallen comrades. "Aquila Triumphant, Forever Supreme". We will not falter. We will not surrender. We will prevail." The ending is a glorious romp through the skies, a shout of victory, and a re-affirmation of our superiority in the air against all enemies. It's not Metallica, but it is a true and timeless statement of what is best and brighest in the human race. We have seen the spirit of Aquila in action this past week, as we have overcome obstacles such as we have never seen, and re-stated our loyalty and determination to never be defeated. If you keep this anthem and make it your own, you will never be ashamed of who and what you are. For you musicians...... Posted Image Thank you for your time. You have all made me very proud. B) |

And here are the lyrics to the original song, which was adapted from a German folk tune for the Panzer Corps. 1. In blizzard or storm, Or in sun warm and bright, The day hot as hell Or bone-chilling be the night, Our faces may with dust be laid, But spirits never fade, No, never fade; Relentless, our tank Thunders out on a raid. 2. With engines a-howling, Fast as is the wind, We head for the foe, Safe, as we're in armor skinned. Our comrades still behind us roam; We fight the foe alone, Yes, fight alone. We stab through the line To break the foes backbone. 3. Whenever the foe May appear in our sight, We'll ram throttle full, Then we'll humble all his might! Of what use is our life if we Our country serve freely? Yes, serve freely! To die for our country, Our honour shall be. 4. With tank traps and mines, Our foe tries to impede. We laugh at his ruses; We know he'll not suceed. And when, in threat, his cannons stand, Half hidden in the sand, Yes, in the sand, We can find our way Over much safer land. 5. And should at long last, Fickle Lady Luck leave, And we remain here, Leaving family to grieve, A bullet with our name on it, Find us and seal our fate, Yes, seal our fate, Our tank will our grave be On that final date. Yeah, the 'Hollywood' version  Once I tracked this down, I listened to that song all afternoon and evening.....it really is emotional, even if you don't understand German. In the course of this, I started noticing how some German words sounded like some English words, and they started building a pattern in my mind. In a couple of hours work, I had the words I wanted. In my fanfic novel, 'Aces", you'll see how I explain and use this as part of the ongoing story of Yellow Squadron. It fits, and would be very powerful, if used in a movie. B) |

Other versions I have found on the Internet. I found this one somewhat amusing.....sounds like folk singers  doing a war song.....made me think of the Smothers Brothers, or Chad & Jeremy.....yeah, I don't expect you younger members to pick up on this one..... http://www.exordio.com/real-audio/panzerlied2.ram Now here is a different, slower one, where you can hear the background chords better...... :) http://s28.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=07E2QKB...R639DF3AMVCOFPB B) |

I think we had already discussed it in another thread, Janet. Besides, it seemed to me that not many people were getting the symbolism and meaning behind it. This is not a throwaway gimmick....this is a statement, in song, of what Aquila is all about. You don't have to remember my lectures :blabla: or admonitions :nono: Our anthem is all you need to know. I also think it's a pretty catchy tune. B) |

As Blue historian, I have become very aware of you feelings for the song. I admitted it's good, now didn't I? ;) |

I think not, Raider. To my mind, that would make it 'gimmicky'. There are several things about this organization that I do not wish to see changed, simply because they have come from the deepest, truest part of me......this is also why they work. As I said in the beginning (of this), I may come up with other verses, but this one is the one that is the truest expression of Aquila. I do not want to dilute it's power. B) |

I see....the purity and the power of one.
;) I guess not adding verses on other Squadrons promotes a sense of unity about Aquila...something along the lines of: "We are all one". B) PS: This topic ought to be pinned somewhere where even visitors can see it ;) . |

There's always the Airborne Hymn "What Wonderful Way To Die" to the tune of "Republic Battle Hymn". I'm sure we can adapt it for our Air Force purposes. |
