Days had passed since a serial killer had taken on a portion of AllCity's crime syndicate with a vengeance no one could call clean or merciful. Bodies were left in the open during the day, gorey scenes around corners unexpectedly, an entire tavern full of low lives had been slaughtered. Even police suffered from casualties. And still, out there somewhere, the perpetrator remained on the loose.

Rumors went around that it was a man on a mission of revenge, or a vigilante hero out to test their skills. Low lives and talkers said the police that died had done everything from took bribes from the crime lords to stuck their noses in the wrong places at the wrong time. Some, usually those on the more pacifistic end said the cold-blooded killer was a mad dog that was killing anyone in reach and should be put down.

The leader of the local crime syndicate went into hiding, clearly terrified he was next. There was a rumor they he'd been wounded, but more than likely the leader had no wish to die and was holed up somewhere with plenty of guards. Similarly, crime had gone down because everyone from prostitutes to druggies were scared. The authorities had slapped up wanted signs for the killer with a question mark over the face. Method of killing was both stealth and torture. Those left alone in the dark were the easiest and most vividly destroyed victims. Blades were the preferred weapon. The reward was set high.

Even so, not many went after the bait. After all, they had very little to go on. Many residents thought the serial killer was doing better for the community and wouldn't talk. After all, this wasn't like the other serial killer going around taking out poor girls ruthlessly from their beds. This one was better. This one was doing good. They should go after the other one, instead.

The most striking reaction out of the city was not one easily seen to the eyes of most. The mafia that had weeks earlier made a strong show of presence in the city had been shaken to the core. Why remained unseen, since none of those killed were openly stated to be connected to the mafia whatsoever. There had been no attacks made to mafia members, either. That said, their strong hand started to show an effort of being vigil. While the mafia remained the most tight-lipped of them all, their own trained team of killers were seen every once in a while, far and above more dangerous than any crime lord could be. Eating at restaurants here, driving dark cars with tinted windows there. No moves were made by the police to correct the situation. After all, the cops had lost too much already. Let the mafia and the bounty hunters deal with the problem.

That brings the story to a dank, miserable, and poverty-stricken section of downtown's east side. Where most buildings were holed out or burned through, and most residents were homeless squatters. The area looked extra empty due once again to the lack of standard criminal presence. Everyone who was out during this day walked on edge. Those that stopped at Moe's Gas station were not out of their cars long before driving off just as quickly. Overhead, a mixture of pollution steaming from pothole covers intermingled with dense, low cloud cover to give the atmosphere a yellow-grey filth that clung to the nostrils and hung off the clothes.

Further off from the gas station and well across the road was an embankment where a sewer-laden creek streamed along across the concrete ditch with all manner of unsightly garbage strewn about it. The creek ended at a large, abandoned complex with no roof or windows, where a 6 ft storm drain grate with steel vertical bars closed off entry to the inner sewer systems and AllCity's underground bowels underneath the building.

There was a space next to the grate where the concrete made a small imprint of shelter from prying eyes. Here a woman with black hair was sitting on the curve of hard ground, just high enough to avoid having to touch the waterous filth. She was wearing spent pink tennis shoes, tight-fitting jeans, and a black robe with the pattern of a dragon upon the back that mismatched the rest of her - too rich for her type to buy on their own. Near her hip was a small bag. She also had a sawed off shotgun in her hands, which she was idly playing with. Moving the small parts that made it function. Her mind distant.

Target Acquired

A mechanical hand snapped up to grab the bus's pull cord even before its owner was fully awake to consider the situation.

ding *screeeech* The bus jerked to a halt in a way no driver would do if not for the fact that a dangerous-looking masked figure in the back was doing the pulling.

Once off the bus, the half-awake mercenary didn't rush to immediately confront the target identified by the cameras she had recently gotten installed on her hat. Clearly her recognition algorithms still needed tuning, as the cameras had tripped the alarm over a hypothetical bounty that existed only in crude pictures.

Oh well, it was another half hour until she could catch the bus again, so she might as well confirm the strange robed lady with the gun wasn't up to anything too sinister.

The mercenary crossed the street and stood still, eyes cast at the figure down by the grate, waiting to be noticed.

Even if the fugitive hadn't heard of Chain's reputation, the ponchoed woman's appearance left little doubt of her profession.

The woman in the black robe hadn't given any real reaction to the bus squealing to a stop not that far off from the storm drain culvert she sat in, nor make any immediate move to confront the stranger standing a ways off watching. From Chain's perspective, what signs of a storm that had stained the inside of the massive concrete pipe days ago was now nothing more than a trickle of corrupted water, leaving the possible bounty plenty of space to sit fully in there and entirely out of view if she wanted to before the steel grating would've stopped any further escape. Though the woman didn't do that; she seemed satisfied just sitting out at the lip of the pipe.

Distracted, playing with the gun, it would've been easy enough to shoot her that entire time before she undoubtedly ended up possibly shooting herself. A well bandaged hand continually pulled the hammer out, clicked it into rest, disengaged, pulled it out again. Her finger played with the trigger, though couldn't pull it all the way to make anything fire. The trigger, after all, was locked. Whether this was intentional or not remained in questionable limbo, considering the slowly growing frustration knitting across the bounty's eyebrows. She shook it once, like that'd do any good.

When it didn't, she rested the gun down and just glared at the weapon.

"I know you're there, " the deep voice of the woman was loud enough to echo across the drainage ditch and reach the hunter in the poncho. No move had been made to look at Chain, like she wasn't worth it. "And I'm not in the mood. So piss off."

From the outside, Chain did little more than stand just out of shotgun range, looking down her mask at the woman in the culvert.

But concealed underneath her poncho, a gun raised in preparation. She couldn't see any trademark swords or green robes in place, but the rest of the picture wasn't so far off.

"My pardon, but you seem like you might know of something I'm looking for..." Came a small voice that notheless seemed to come from everywhere. "Something very valuable, to the right people. A certain… amethyst."

Cold blue eyes bored down at the fugitive, searching for any reaction that might betray the truth of the matter.

Any smart chick with a bounty as high as she did on her head would've been quiet. They would've played dumb. Oh no, not this one. No %*&#ing way. She'd been dragged through the mud and back so badly lately that her self preservation genes were one city away, drunk as $%!&. That said, she didn't glare at her assailant. Didn't pull out her sword from the depths of the shadows. Though her finger did twitch at the head noise this jerk was giving off, she really gave no absolute response short of a huff that might've been a snerk if interpreted by those who'd know the woman better.

"Like I haven't heard that one before, you up'n'coming pain in the @##." Casual as a storm rolling in, the bandit known as Amethyst grabbed the sawed off shotgun by the muzzle with her other hand and shook the butt of it at the air. "Don't make me beat you with this."

An eyebrow raised.

Certain things were fitting with the image on the wanted poster, but certain important things definitely weren't.

"That's a dangerous thing to be brandishing out in the open…" Chain replied, not yet breaking her deathly stillness. "Particularly if one is not versed in its proper use."

"What do you know?" Amethyst scoffed openly, brows furrowed. She slowly, like it wouldn't be noticed, moved to hold it by the handle. Yet her grip was way too lax, and her finger never really cares to go for the trigger. "I could still kill you with this piece of worthless garbage if I had to." She waved it a little.

"And what does it matter to you, anyway?"

The masked figure's unchanging posture indicated how little she thought of Amethyst's threat.

"Professionalism, you might say." The huntress said finally, taking a step forward down the culvert. "At the end of day, what separates reputable bounty hunters from common mercenaries is a certain… commitment to public safety."

Her blue eyes narrowed at the gun in Ame's limp-wristed grip. "And someone bandying about a gun they know nothing of is a threat to public safety."

Safe to say the demeanor of this bounty hunter or whoever the %*&# they were was starting to put Amethyst into a bad mood. Wasn't only that they didn't heed her passive warnings, it was the way they were doing it. Standing there, judging her, the wanted woman couldn't get why the hunter was taking the time to say all this. Most mercernaries would've done more by now.

Not this one. This huntress in that lightly colored cloak and dagger get up wanted to talk about the gun in Ame's hand. She finally fit her finger to the trigger, visibly unsure once Bandita over there started stepping up and invading her comfort zone.

Each step forward brought Ame's dark green, murderous eyes more sturdily upon the huntress. She didn't approve.

"The public can go shank itself up the @##." she spat, sitting up to face the oncoming threat and putting her free hand to the darker of the two swords. Other hand still on gun. "I don't know what you're getting at, but are you going to attack me or not? Because if you start going on about some dark past I'll choke you in the sewer water before you're done."

The bounty hunter's forward march halted as Amethyst put a hand back to some other, unseen weapon. "Why would I announce myself and walk into range of your weapons if I intended to strike first?"

While her hands were aimed at the ready behind the poncho, the visible prosthetic hands dangled empty in plain sight of Ame. At least until Chain raised one to point at the shotgun in her hands. "If you're going to insist on carrying that around, you can at the very least concede a moment of your day to learn how to use it properly."

Amethyst kept her hand to her sword's handle, her thumb on the scabbard, even after the unknown bounty hunter halted. From the looks of it she was prepared for anything, and had likely faced everything up to this point from the rough-edged look about her.

A truck whipped by on the road, throwing its day lights through the smolder of city life. As the lights passed the culvert, Chain could make out the wild glint about the bandit's eyes, the dull shine of the filthy gun, the scabbard of two swords, and then behind Ame leaned up once in the shadows the outline of another object. A case if her gun trained expertise were anything to go by.

Either way she said her piece. "Why would I announce myself and walk into range of your weapons if I intended to strike first?"

A quote that almost coerced another witty reply, if not for Ame closing her mouth before the words left. She thought about it instead. She frowned. "Point taken."

Shifting, almost uncoiling like a snake, the bandit slipped her leg over the edge of the concrete, followed by the other, then stood. Watching Chain's hands, her shrouded expressions, and occasionally flicking her gaze to other places where Chain might have allies waiting to shoot from a distance. There was no trust between them, and why should there be? One's a badguy. One's a hunter. They were natural enemies.

Ame scoffed to the latter comment. "Feh... So what, you'll show me?" She pointed the gun at Chain, more of a gesture than a threat. Then the sawed off shotgun went slack and dangled trigger-side from her pointer finger. "Real funny. But you wont get your goodie points in today. The gun's broken."

As Amethyst uncoiled herself warily, and gave her grudging assent to Chain's offer, the bounty huntress stepped forward, coming to within ten feet of the other.

"If it is broken, it may be easily fixed." She stated, raising her prosthetic hand once again.

kssshhhhk Ame would be treated to the sight of the hand and disembodied forearm crossing the distance to the shotgun on the end of an unreeling chain that disappeared under the masked one's poncho.

It wasn't a lightning-quick motion, however. Ame's reflexes were perfectly able to pull back or swat the hand away before it latched onto the gun.

Despite the bandit's paranoia about Chain and her kind, the very slowness of the act made it seem unlikely that the bounty huntress was trying to snatch it away.

The bounty hunter stepped forward, getting within distance of being slashed into bloody chunks if Ame had any say in the matter. Honestly, on a regular day Ame would've likely taken up the chance to fight if it put her into a better mood. But she didn't make any move to kill Chain. Maybe she had her reasons, who knows at this point.

The chain arm coming her way, slow as it was, put a few passing emotions visibly across the face of the wanted woman. First was the traditional glare, then surprise, followed closely by her eyes opening just a little wider in an almost child-like fascination. The later of those expressions was fleeting at best, because when she realized what the demonic, floating hand was reaching for, she held the gun closer out of spite of Chain's telepathic grasp. "O~oi..."

Distrust returned. "It might be broken, but it's still my gun. Got it? This gun belongs to me. If you get some wise @## idea to run off with it, I'll hunt you down like the dog you are until you're good and dead. I mean it." She couldn't decide whether to glance at the hand or Chain, herself. Uncertainty crossed her more than once. "And if you do somehow fix it, I'm not going to pay you anything. I'll owe you nothing. Okay?"

The metal hand hovered in mid-air as Ame pulled the gun back with reservations.

"I've been on the other end of enough such chases to know better. There are few guarantees in life, but rest assured you will not find me absconding with your property or charging you for a service not agreed upon beforehand. My attempt to fix your gun is nothing more than a courtesy to you and the public, which you are free to take or leave." Replied the bounty hunter flatly, somehow hinting that while no offense had been taken, there were finite reserves of patience to be had.

Contempt and the fragilities of patience began to linger between the wanted woman and her gun-toting counterpart. Amethyst glowered at Chain and would have spat at her telepathic words if she had a mind to. Through it all attention moved as if a boat on the ocean to the full area. The streets above, a car passing by that - to the over-active imagination - seemed to slow down ever so slightly before it slipped off, the windows of a brick and mortar building not far away, angles of rooftops. Shines of light that could be a sniper.

"Fancy language for a mercenary, " muttered the bandit, handing the useless hunk of metal to Chain muzzle-first, before releasing the trigger. There was a real chance Ame could've accidentally engaged and the bounty hunter would have to find herself a new prosthetic... If it were loaded.

Nothing of the sort happened.

Instead, a dark Linklin town car crawled to a half on the edge of Ame's vision. The window opened a crack. The swordswoman took notice almost immediately. With no small hint of understanding the situation, Amethyst went to both unsheathe her black-scabbard sword and rush towards Chain - around her hand and the tether attached to it. The sleek, long blade slipped into the air without a sound.
