Funny that nobody has discussed episode 5. I had hope after episode 4! Its was actually quite enjoyable! but, Episode 5... *sigh* In some ways the second half was very interesting since it was a very dark twist on the show, Reminiscent of Paranoia Agent. But the interesting and dark points of the second episode are completely overshadowed by the extremely mediocre (and gross) first half. I agree with what i heard on a podcast, that the show has so much potential for excellence and genius, they've even touched on it! but- they just don't take advantage of that for the entire show, instead making booger, poop and masturbation jokes. Such a good idea flushed down the toilet of potty humor.

Sing it with me, folks. That's the point! P&Sw\G is using influences from American animation and inverting the moe tropes that are over saturating the anime industry right now to illustrate everything that the industry is doing wrong. So many other shows have the potential to be great, but are flushed down the toilet of homogeneous goo. |

Prefacing my book here by saying that this is My opinion, feel free to disagree. I don't mean to say anything offensive, just stating my thoughts. So If you love the show and are going to be mad at me for hating on it, skip down to the summery at the end. The animation in Panty and Stocking is wonderful and never ceases to amaze me. Episode 5 had some downright spooky animation in the second half, and the contrast between the cartoony and the dark worlds was fantastic. Did I mention the music is awesome? I have to entirely disagree with you on the inverting moe tropes point, though. Moe, its true, has been a very dominant reoccurring trope over the last 5+ years, (longer if you actually look at what constitutes moe.) but why would that be something to lash out so violently against by making an entire anime dedicated to do the opposite of moe? or as you say, everything the industry is doing 'wrong'. Moe is tool, just like the tsundere character type is a tool, like the giant robot is a tool, like the loveable scamp is a tool. They're all tools for the story writers. When used tastefully its fine the problem is when a trope is overplayed or run into the ground. (See peoples problems with K-On!!) Moe isn't bad, Look at Azumanga Daioh. Chiyo and Osaka are moth Moe-type characters and also two of the crowd favorites. Lucky Star is actually up of a most Moe cast, to be fair not everyone liked Lucky Star, but it was still well received. Its a common trope of any anime series that has slice of life or comedy elements. Why would Gainax want to point out something that: A. is already well stated, (Moe overkill) and B. is not that big of a problem. Why is it not that big of a problem? Because the Moe wave is fading out. Moe Spike in popularity cause it was fun and it sold well. well, now people are getting kind tired of it, so its fading, just like magical girls, just like mecha, just like Fruits Basket style harems. its natural for something to spike in popularity, then fade. but its not going away by any means. Its becoming another tool for storytelling or comedy or whatnot, just like magical girls, mecha, harems, ect. So what, in my opinion, is Gainax doing? The guys over at Gainax, I think, wanted to produce something shocking. Jarring and unlike anything else on the market. Much like they've done many times before. What you're saying is partially true! they looked at what is out there right now, and produced something that doesn't exist at the moment. Though in anime today, nudity or practically nude characters and sexual innuendos are fairly common and thus, no longer jarring. So what is Gainax to do? go beyond innuendos. So they made a truly original show. Crazy animation, crazy characters, original story, simple but fun plots, it all sounds so good. So where does it trip up? In my book, it trips up by focusing too much on trying to be racy and simple. This show has a wonderful world. But it kinda ends there. Panty and Stocking are two-dimensional characters, There is no progressive plot, there is no conflict or resolve. Panty and Stocking are flat characters, they are what they are and no more. In fact, I really don't like them, they're self-centered and rather annoying. If you've ever tried to write, you know its hard to make a story fun if you honestly have no liking for the main characters. Which leads to the second point. Panty and Stocking has no progressive plot. K-On has no progressive plot. But K-On has characters that you like and are meant to connect and identify with it, that's why its a character comedy. In Panty and Stocking, like I said, I don't have any sympathy or positive emotions for the main characters, so the lack of plot causes the show to not have any appeal to me. Even if I don't like the main characters, a good plot can hold me till the end. (see Scrapped Princess) Panty and Stocking has neither. That I don't find their idea of comedy amusing. Finally, Panty and Stocking has no conflict or resolve. You always know that they're gonna win in the end. Always. Every ghost is the same, shoot it a couple times and its dead. Okay, so what about character conflict? Sure, there's some character conflict. Panty and Stocking get mad each other and stop working together, or Panty becomes obsessed with fame, or stocking gets fat. First off, thrilling. Second, you know everything is going to work out in the end because each episode starts fresh. So far at least, there is no reoccurring villain. Thus, there's no one to threaten them or change their life, nobody to strive to defeat to fix their problems. Instead the progression consists of reluctantly fighting until they get an unnamed amount of coins. In summery, I can see why someone could like this! Its got humor that some people enjoy, the plots are simple and fast. Much like current American cartoons. But really, Its just not for me. As much as I wish it was.

Well, You know how I just posted a massive rant about all of the problems in Panty and Stocking? ... Episode 6 fixed a lot of them. It was truly excellent, up with Gainax's standards. My favorite episode of the series yet, and definitely one of the best anime episodes from this fall season. Honestly. this was GREAT. Hoodieboy, you have fair right now to make fun of me for loving this episode so much. Heres a Torrent of the 720p version. Here |

sorry 'bout shrinkin' ya Starlogic, just in the interests of space 'n' all... I like shows with no progression of plot. I actually think progression of plot ruins a lot of fiction. It's what happens in Real Life, but stories don't have to be like real life, and that's one of their strengths. The characters can stay the same. I also like shows with unlikeable characters. I think it's a shame that producers seem to think there MUST be characters for the audience to identify with. Why? There are loads of good stories (a lot of classic movies even) where every single character is someone you'd want to stay *far* away from. It's one of the things that bugs me about Invader Zim fans; it's a hilarious story where everybody hates everybody, but so many fans need to twist it into something else. And plot in general? Sera Rose covered that pretty well on the back page of one of Aaron A's comics; I wish I could remember more detail. Suffice to say that it's interesting, but not always necessary, and certainly not the be-all-end-all. Even resolving a conflict isn't always needed for a good story. There's a lot more room to play around than your (and my) English teachers said. SO ... that being done with ... I *really* want to actually *watch* these, unhindered by tiny boxes or even needing to be online; I can't really pay attention properly. Does anyone know where they can be *downloaded* for later viewing? (I tried that bit-torrent thing Starlogic posted, but I've no clue whether I can make it work.... |

Wow, your views are interesting and worth considering too! You guys are like the opposite though, lol. Would would have thunk ol' P & S would have invoked so much discussion? I don't know if they are downloadable anywhere, alphatroll. I usually go to www.savevid.com and have that convert the youtube videos to mp4 files. I downloaded the torrent for that file Starlogic provided but the video didnt show any subtitles even though the file is supposed to be subbed! I have captions/subtitles enabled and everything but I still dont see them, I use Divx for MKV files.

Ah! Theres the problem, I used VLC to watch it and it was fine. the subtitles are split into a seperate track so that you can turn them on and off if you want. VLC read the file fine. (you should really download it its the best thing i've found so far, since it plays practically every video format. including DivX) As for alternative downloads for the episodes, Here direct downloads for episodes 1-6. (lets hope they still work.) Episode 1 Episode 2 Episode 3 Episode 4 Episode 5 Episode 6
Really shrinking isn't that bad of an idea. I like stories with no progression of plot too, I liked K-On, Lucky Star, Stargate (at times it didn't really progress.), The 'Series of Unfortunate Events' books didn't really progress the overall plot until the last few books, just to name a few. but if you're going to have a slow plot, you've gotta rely on your characters and content of each episode to keep the viewer interested, and I feel Panty and Stocking are weak characters. I don't have anything against lack of plot. thats a technique But even though everyone in Invader Zim hated each other, you still liked all the characters! In Pani Poni Dash most of the protagonists are anti-heroic, but i still like the characters. Pinky and the Brain is another show like this. Stories where the villain (or hero) is really evil and you hate him, sure you hate him but that's still an emotion you have toward him. I'm not referring to the fact that the characters are evil or just generally not good characters, I mean that when I watch the show I could care less about what they do, I'm more interested in the enemies they're fighting or the side characters they meet. Panty and Stocking as characters are uninteresting. Yeah, resolve isn't always needed, that's true, and you've got me there. That wasn't a fair argument. I guess I feel the shows resolve is rushed. when I watched episode 6, (spoiler, its one episode, not two mini-episodes, unlike the others.) they had time to elaborate and use their world they built, things weren't rushed but the exciting pace of the episode was kept up. Then looking back on the previous episodes, each episode ends really quickly. My opinion. ![]() |

Thanks everybody, I burn'd some midnite oilz & figured it out, stayed up mosta tha night watching 1-4 before getting too tired. FTR, I thought 3b was positively BRILLIANT - undeniably extremely raunchy, but also so universal it verged on mythic. I've known some soldiers who've seen real action, and I'm positive every one of them would have both identified and laughed their asses off! 1a OTOH was kind of a weak one for the starter; I'd have tossed it in later & picked something better to introduce the show. |

If you love Transformers, you'll love episode 7! They make fun of the Michael bay Transformers movie and American cartoon Transformers! They also go to a casino in part 2 and Scanty & Kneesocks the demon sisters come back with more evil hijinks! A great show all around.

Part one was hilarious, but part two is my favorite episode so far. I love those plots where the characters need to raise money and get carried away with it, and the subversion of that was great. |

Part one: though the plot was pretty bland, all the transformers references were wonderful, and hilarious! I loved some of the shot-for-shot references from "Transformers: The Movie", It was truly a fun episode. Part Two: I liked this episode, It had good humor, the 'stripping' wasn't overplayed, the story was original, and the montage at the beginning was hilarious.
