Well, this has to be the strangest Hope and Faith type paring Ive seen yet. GAINAX is coming up with a new anime coming out in October in Japan called Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. Theres is a huge buzz about it already. Some artwork is out already, and it seems its gonna be a crazy, tounge in cheek, loads of sex & violence story not for the kiddies! The style is real unusual and reminds me of stuff I saw in the anime film Dead Leaves, and American cartoons like Power Puff Girls and Invader Zim.

Here are some pics and links for you guys to check out, im sure you guys can find more. What are your thoughts? I like the character designs alot. Apparently these two girls are rebellious angels from heaven sent to fight ghosts and monsters down here. Panty can turn her panties into a gun and Stocking can turn her stockings into swords! Garter Belt is the priest who briefs them (pun not intended, but should it be? ;) on their mission. Stocking is a goth lolita who carries a creepy stuffed cat and Panty seems to like gold chains and pearls and get this, she "really likes to have sex with guys" so thats good news for us ronery nerds! XD

So I wasn't the only one who saw this!
I'll definitely try it out, Gainax's stuff is always worth a look.

The name is so strange though...

Erm - not to be mean or anything, but how in the world is this a "Hope and Faith type pairing"? It's like saying apples and oranges are the same cause they are both fruit and grow on trees.

Also, it was weird when you said it was not for kids and really violent type stuff, and then compared it to Powerpuff Girls...

I think he means by saying that is to bring Two Characters who are more-or-less diffarent in characteristics from eachother and have them to be considered a Duo and form One Role.
Much like Powerangers are considered a Team, yet takes 1 Role, or something, im just abit tired so its hard for me to think of examples.

EDIT:

Best example ever is Hope and Faith, really xD

Gainax has always been a favorite of mine. This one certainly looks...different!

The art style does look really cool, and the characters do look like a lot of fun. Definitely digging the goth-lolita design. Though I'm curious as to why they have a dog that looks suspiciously like Gir...

I was about to say I'd like to know more about the story, but this might be one of those cases where the story doesn't necessarily matter (if that comic in the last link is any indication. "Sex duel," huh? Well that's a new one)

Hmmmmm.....yeah, I'm curious :)

I think he was referring to the art style. which is very much like the Powerpuff Girls, Invader Zim, My life as a Teenage Robot and other 'kids' shows. but at the same time containing mature themes and content, unlike the aforementioned shows.

(interesting read, the Project Haruhi Write-up.)

A parallel of this would be 'Popotan'. where it contained adult themes, mainly nudity, but the core themes of the show would be excellent for a developmental teen. as it touches on dealing with difficult people, moving away, love, being yourself, making friends, the list goes on and on. It has straight up morals to each story! but the adult content seems oddly out place, seeming to only be there because of what it was based off of.

I think it's probably the way Tom has managed to *personify* yin & yang in them so perfectly, probably without even intending to.... right down to hair colors!

Yes, that is what I meant. You see alot of light/dark, optimistic/pessimistic, outgoing/reserved, etc. types in fiction. Also this one is blonde/brunette which of course reminded me of Hope and Faith. ^_^0 I think I may make a topic about Hope & Faith-ish "couples" in fiction. I can think of a few already.

Trailer!
Ooh, thanks for the trailer! The animation looks really neat, Im surprised they use so many American sound effects, they must be a fan of American comics and cartoons, you can really tell. Its an interesting mix with the Asian influence. A nice refreshing difference from all the other animes. The music for the trailer was annoying, I hope its not like that all the time, in my opinion anyway. Ive been collecting alot of the artwork so I hope to do a fanart someday.

Trailer!
Well, after seeing that, now I'm VERY interested in seeing this show. The animation just looks so darn cool and original.

I agree with Hoodieboy though, I wasn't too crazy about the music.

And hey, isn't it great to be able to embed Youtube videos now? :hope: I do know it's possible to make them bigger if you want too.

Holy crap! Four seconds into the trailer and there's already a blatant Powerpuff Girls reference! This is what should have happened with the Powerpuff Girls anime, minus the overt sexuality of course.

I know what my favorite cartoon is going to be in the next year...

My favorite bit of irony in this: They are satirizing the hyper-sexualized state of many Japanese cartoons, most of which favor the upskirt panty shot in battle - The irony, though, is that Panty can never have one of those in battle since, well, she uses her panties as her weapon.

I just hope there's some amount of positive GLBT content, even for just an episode or a few passing remarks.

EDIT: and the music, minus the orgasms, also seems like it's ripped straight from The PPGs.

Whaddya mean "Tarantino"? It's pretty obvious Kevin Smith is involved in this *somehow*!

I meant it in the violence mixed with sexuality, Somewhat akin to Kill Bill.

Looks like I was wrong. They have apparently gotten a broadcaster that will let them do whatever they wish without censorship. As far as Japanese law will allow, at least.

I just saw the first episode and it was glorious.

The show is still trying to find its legs I think, but it's still a really good show. I'm really liking both Panty and Stocking, though some of the characters come off a bit one-note.

The vulgarity can come off as pretty gratuitous at times and isn't what I laughed at for the most part. However, I loved the quieter bits of humor, such as Stocking just going back to bed with an alarm blazing at the beginning of "Excretion Without Honor or Humanity". Then again, all of "Death Race 2010" was hilarious and that was even more high energy than the other one. It was more clever though.

My favorite frame from the opening, spoilered for size...
