Hmmmm, kinda gives new meaning to "busman's holiday".... Of course, where I live there is neither public transit nor even a cab service. Plus, the sidewalks are littered with razor wire and landmines. ![]() (Slight exaggeration, there's only sidewalks in about half the town anyway, and most of them look like they're made from old tombstones. But I did pull a 1/2 inch piece of bottle glass out of my shoe the other day. It was buried about 1/2 inch deep.) |

Woof. What a day. It's been raining so much in the area that there's been some flooding. A lot of people woke up to basements full of water. Luckily we weren't one of them.........at first. Halfway through my day at work, I was very concerned whether I was going to be able to get home later with how many roads kept closing. Upon getting the call that the basement was flooded (14 year here and that's NEVER happened), I figured it only made sense to leave early. Man, some of the roads were REALLY bad on the way home. There were a lot of spots where they were overtaken with water, and I was just parying my car could make it through. Luckily it did, but I can't even tell you how many times I must have said "holy s***" on the way home while looking at the scenery. Especially at a river near the end of my road! It was so strong and expanded that it was flowing through the side of this one house's yard Must have spent an hour and a half taking buckets of water up out of the basement. The tragic thing is we didn't even make a dent. Completely a losing battle. Thankfully there's a company on it's way to install a pump to clear it out. Otherwise, it's just staying a pool for now. Its not raining very much now, so hopefully things should subside. As much of a pain this has been, it could have been SO VERY much worse. Apparently closer to wear I work a dam burst and the water washed away so many houses. That's just awful; those poor people I'm lucky in that, while I do live right by a big river, my house is also at the top of a very steep hill.Ah, New England. @BaZul:Somebody better give that guy a hand. ..........see what I did there?...........*crickets* |

@Tom: I live in a house on a steep hill. So I'm safe if flooding round here EVER gets to the level you had Today was another day that shows me why I hate Public Transport. Went on a bus today... got stuck in a big traffic jam. Stayed there for 45 minutes & arrived over an hour later back home... If ANYTHING happens on tomorrows bus journey I'll kiss buses goodbye & go back to trains!

I have to remind myself that math doesn't come naturally to most artists.... but I coulda toleja thattun! Bucketing out the basement is like, well, drops in a bucket....If I manage to find links to some good pics of the 2008 flooding in Iowa I'll show 'em (try google if you want). There was an ongoing exhibition in the Cedar Rapids art museum for at least a year afterward, and that was some amazing stuff. It was ranked as a once-in-a-century event by a bunch of bigshot meteorological organizations. I can remember at least two years when it got pretty bad (including the one when the dam overflowed and exposed some really cool fossil deposits), but this topped 'em big time. *I* didn't really notice so much, 'cause these days I live pretty far from the rivers, but driving around in the country it was very easy to wonder why they don't grow rice here instead of corn

In my defense, it was not MY plan, nor did I like/ approve of said plan. I was just stuck with it Though for the record: yeah, math is not my forte  @CreamCrazy: Woof That sucks! Stuff like that (among many others) are why I stopped using the employee buses to get to work and just drive in myself. I'll pay for the gas! It's worth it to avoid the frustrations of the bus.

I can now officially announce that, starting April 19th, I shall be working for this little software company called Microsoft. I've been wanting to announce this for so long but I really needed to wait until things were more official. I don't think I could possibly be any happier. |

I got to see / hear Finn Zetterholm tonight, at a local establishment; he's a Swedish folk singer who I've been a fan of for years. We weren't so many; maybe 15 people, and so they put us in the smaller of their two rooms, and it got much more intimate that way. So lucky for us who came there! And after tonight I have tons more music to go through, I know he's written childrens' books too (had no idea) and it was just awesome fun to hear about how he got started and the crazy things he's done and the people he's met (including the king and some other poets/folk singers I happen to like). (If you know about Vreeswijk, he was in the mix. And Olof Palme, before he was statsminister) He mixed poetic songs with totally indecent ones, and did the same with the memories he went over, funny things, sad things, one after another, and some of my favorite songs of his. I had such a great time, I got the opportunity to tell him I love what he does, and I got a freebie signed CD, too
Way to go! BaZul: Mr Crowbar. OK, for some reason I find that thing creepier than Pyramid Head. |

Woof. I'm sure you've got stories to tell from THAT job. And why did that make me think of this scenario? "Big Money's Tech Support! Yeah, you got a problem wit your PC? Jump sideways through the air and fire two guns at it. It wont solve your problem, but it will "fix" da computer, if ya know what I sayin'." I don't know, my theory is that anything can be made funnier with the addition of a mobster/ gangster guy. |

Ironically, I also used to work for HP. Right around the time that song came out, in fact. And *far* more stories from *that* gig! Never did have a plackard, though, and 9-to-5 would have been *way* too much to ask ![]() So, Doc, once you're payin' tha billz wit' ya mad programmin' skillz, will you still waste time with all us chatroom yakkers?

The only interesting story I have from today is that I got a haircut. I waited entirely too long, as usual. It was beginning to get rather annoying. Here's the BEFORE image, in all its uncombed, straight from out of bed glory: http://img101.yfrog.com/i/4gbl.jpg/ And here's the AFTER picture (much better, eh?): http://img59.yfrog.com/i/9dx.jpg/ Posting that because SOMEWHERE I must be SOMEBODY'S Bishōnen, right........right?..........

I haven't signed into MSN for a few days now, so I'm not sure how it's working here. I still haven't gotten a messenger client for my iMac yet. I've just been using BeeJive on my iPhone. (Can anyone recommend a good multi-program chat client for the Mac?) Hope yours gets squared away for ya soon! |
