The avatar Im currently using now is my main character Stacy in a series called Hoodie Girl (also her nickname). Most of it is in my artwork at DA and at home and in my head. :D She's a pretty nice person, I try to keep her from being too Mary Sue-ish but she is just too cool, heh. Even her jacket has the title. I may choose to make it as a webcomic but I think I want to wait until I have the confidence to do strips at regular intervals and get a wacom tablet. Ive actually been working on the series a long time (ever since I was in college 10 years ago), usually just doing slice of life plot points and also she and her friends are used quite often to model different clothing and style ideas I come across. I think down the road I may change my name to HoodieDude as I may use Hoodie Boy as a nickname for another character.

Most artists draw to make themselves happy so even if I dont ever get any fame, at least I put my ideas out there on paper.

This is a good idea for some time, but don't wait too long. Sometimes the best thing to do is force yourself into the role. That way, you KNOW you'll be sure to keep up with the work since you have a schedule and people depending on you. It's a lot harder to say "meh, I don't feel like doing it today" when that's the case. I used to put stuff off and say "yeah, I'll do that someday..." all the time. "Alone in a Crowd" really changed that for me. Instilled a sense of "carpe diem" in me!

Jumping right in is also a good way of finding out if it's truly something you want to do. There are people who think they want to start a comic, then, when they actually see what it's like, realize it wasn't what they thought. But with your attitude of making yourself happy and just getting it to paper, that may not be as much of a factor with you :)

The best thing to do in the world is to try. Otherwise, how will you ever know?

Anyway, best of luck with it! She looks like a pretty interesting character.

I just dont feel Im at a level where my writing skills could really carry a strip, I mean I have ideas of what my characters do and what they go through, but its the stuff in between Im worried about, plus I dont know much about writing funny dialouge either.

Plus my laziness and depression gets in the way, I wish I had more energy to draw but then I put it off too much to do other things that arent important (used to be video games, now its just too much internet).

Ive been planning to put a timeline of events/profiles for my charas, Ill either post or PM you the info if you like to read about it. Perhaps having some personal input could give me a jump start I need.

Remember, all webcomic artists are lonely single white men with glasses, and maybe one day I too shall join their ranks, lol! (Seriously though, the stereotype seems to have some truth...sheesh! And have you ever met an artist without one or more emotional problems? lol. You got to have a sense of humor about yourself. :)

Maybe starting out with a series of drawings, gradually working toward more complexity & 'finished-ness' would be a good start. A lot of people on dA etc. have self-imposed schedules to post *something* like every week or even every day!

I agree with Mr Blue there, just draw and build up a sketchbook of ideas and so on. Even if you never use any of it, 1) you'll be practicing your work, 2) you'll hopefully be enjoying it and 3) you might come up with ideas you want to use later. I don't draw comics per se but I do write, and it's taken me a good few years to perfect the art of the flash fiction - and I still don't think I'm good enough! Just keep on at it.

(Yes, Tom, I realise I'm echoing your words to me!)

I had those issues/ fears at one point. They do tend to stifle creativity. I wish I could tell you how I left them behind, but I don't actually know. One day I simply did and realized doing what I'm doing now was more enriching than what I was doing before it.

Sure, feel free to send it along. Please forgive me if it takes me a while to get back to you though, k?

Kris Straub and Danielle Corsetto are not amused :P

No, it's true though, that does seem to be a strong stereotype. But what isn't a stereotype and seems to be for damn sure is that we all have emotional problems or anxiety of some kind. I know I do, so that makes me a real cartoonist, right?

I think some of The Simpsons most memorable and exceptionally written episodes are centered around Lisa.

Great choice :happyhope:

The MyPod episode is brilliant, being the Apple fan I am; that made it extra funny :happyhope:

Did you also know this fact:

Japanese broadcasters reversed viewer dislike of the series by focusing marketing of the show on Lisa. Lisa's well-intended but ill-fated struggles to be a voice of reason and a force of good in her family and community struck a chord with Japanese audiences!

Amazing right?

Huh, wow, no, I didn't know that. That's pretty interesting! It makes a lot of sense though, considering the Japanese structure of values.

I find it interesting that my connection and draw to The Simpsons changed over the years. I really did grow up with the show: when I was very young, Bart was my favorite. Then when I was a teenager I watched the show for Homer. I appreciated his humor more than any of the other characters at that point. Now that I'm in the second half of my 20's, Lisa's become more my favorite character because I can relate to her in so many ways.

I think the episode "Lisa's Substitue" should be on the list of the most powerful pieces of animation of all time. "You are Lisa Simpson." There's just so much meaning!

(I'm a classic Simpsons fanboy as it is, heh  )

Another good Lisa episode that has similar plot points AIAC would appreciate, would be the episode "Summer of 4ft. 2" where Lisa goes to the beach and tries to be cool but finds friends that accept her for who she is. I really liked the outfit she wore in that episode but the animators didnt want to put her in it again cause I guess the many colors were hard to animate. T_T

I wish there were some better pics but its hard to find. I did link to a place where you can watch the full episode though.

Oh yes, that episode is one of my favorites :D I love how they played with Bart and Lisa's personalities in that one. The ending's really sweet too.

Animated sitcoms used to be genuinely funny AND have heart. Now they're just...drunk college guy humor.

Cute! My current avatar is Faith from the comic strip where she is in gym class. I liked the expression because it seems appropriate for being a critic. ;) I might try out a Panty avatar since you have the Stocking one unless someone else wants to do it first.

Oh, also I love Starlogics new animated avatar, I guess its fun to watch girls walking, isn't it? ;)

I was gonna ask who you are and what you've done with Starlogic (due to the whole lack-of-drumming thing), but that ending sequence pretty much filled in the rhythm section! B)

Aaaaand here we gots somethin' that started as fancy vector stuff but simplified down to a few pixels pretty nicely. That sucker's less than half a kilobyte, folks. Though Reynard & I may be the only ones who remember a time when that mattered....

Plus, it felt so nice 'n' Pilgrim-y ;)

Wow, that looks like a really cool and well animated anime, I'll really have it check it out.

Since no one wanted to do a Panty avatar, Ive made one. I wonder if anyone else will be Garterbelt? lol

Actually, I used to make custom avatars/signatures for people over on the Ichigo's Forums (Anime and Anime music were the primary topics) and, yeah, they had some pretty stringent rules on how much kilobyte-age one could use.
