In the early going, RLL and JM had a clear preference to retain 18 teams. I don't think either will mind me saying that.

As time went on, it looked likely that we'd end up going down the 16 route - and there wasn't a single admin who was staunchly opposing any move.

Every effort was made to make the best decision based on the feedback we received from all coaches. And I think we achieved that in the end.

It was a good exercise and nobody is saying that the 16 team model lacks merit.

I'm not against equalisation, but I'm against it becoming the norm every year.

That said, the West Coast situation is unique - and I don't think we ever thought that updating your list would effectively disqualify someone from an entire draft year.

I do have my picks back bro, I lost my 2016 ones not 2017
Oh really? In that case carry on, thought you had two years of no picks.

Dropping to 16 teams was, and is still, a viable option and one that is very much on the cards if we don't see an improvement from some. It was incredibly close to happening right now and plans for the change had pretty much been finalised. I actually thought we'd be making the change.
But personally I'm a lot more comfortable with giving it another year with 18 teams and changing next year if need be. Changing to 16 teams will see two full lists distributed among 16 teams. All teams will have more quality and depth, player values will probably change, on-field positions will be easier to fill, injuries will be easier to cover without trades... it doesn't guarantee that things will pick up and could actually result in a decrease in the need to trade for a number of teams. What happens if a number of coaches who already have a habit of sitting on lists and trade only when they need to no longer need to trade? It could just lead to more complaints.

With regards to this leaving the site with nothing to do until November, any drafts for the players from the 2 teams dropped would only fill one post-season anyway so it's really just a short term increase in activity. And if we go to 18 teams for 2018 you'll be able to do it this time next year instead of having nothing to do until November after the 2017 season.

I also think that having Wacky in and giving Dono a chance to lift is a better option than just dumping Dono and not rewarding Wacky with a position after he's already done an incredible job of boosting the site over recent times.

Surely given the evenness of the competition and the quality of some of the lists entering their potential premiership window next season along with the addition of Wacky it doesn't hurt to take a year to assess the real need to drop 2 teams before making a major structural change that would be very easy to make in the future but very difficult to reverse.

It won't be the same as other seasons where coaches could do very little as it was difficult to make coaching changes because we needed to make sure we had a good option waiting to fill their spot. People now know that we don't need someone to replace them. If they're not performing two of them are out.

Give it a year under these conditions and see what effect it has on the competition.

The voice of reason as always JM. I've accepted this is the way we're going, hopefully Dono and Wacky both make the decision more than justified.
