Dear all As everybody is well aware by now, the AFFL admin has undertaken a comprehensive review of the current league structure – which included, amongst other agenda items, consideration of reverting back to a 16-team format. The review involved ongoing discussions amongst the admin team over a three-month period, and a public consultation process that included liaison with every coach regarding their intention and commitment to the game. In line with the review findings, the admin team would like to propose the following; 1 - AFFL will remain as an 18 team competition for 2017. 2 - Effective immediately, Wacky Tiger has been appointed as the new coach of the Carlton Football Club. Wacky brings a wealth of experience, and he’s available to commence trading without the need for admin approval. 3 - The draft picks thread will be updated shortly so that picks reflect the number (i.e. Geelong’s 1st = Pick 18) 4 - Additionally, the trading of 2017 picks will be available within the next 24 hours. Once Stoney sets up the 2017 draft pick thread, these picks will be eligible to be included in official trades. One thing that is abundantly evident from this process, is that we are universally committed to ensuring that this game continues to remain as the benchmark of AFL fantasy games. However it’s important to note that active coaches are paramount to the success of AFFL, and therefore we’ll be relying on increased effort from everyone across the board. Reverting back to a 16 team competition for the 2018 season is still a very real possibility and if is likely if we have the same concerns regarding coaching activity and performance this time next year. The admin team would like to thank everyone who contributed their thoughts and ideas during this time. Here’s to a BIG off-season, and a sensational 2017! AFFL ADMIN. |

Congratulations Wacky The Blues have A LOT to work with, and I actually regard it as one of the more exciting lists to manage with the number of high draft picks and recent draftees. With a bit of work, I can see that list being shaped into a nice little dynasty to be competing with the likes of Port Adelaide, Brisbane and Essendon over the next decade. Now let's all try and rip the newbie

So pretty much nothing changes? Even though we've got one coach who still can't update their list despite being in the job months and another who in five+ years on here has either been on leave due to work or travel for 70% of their time on here? Ok then. |

Gotta say I really have no doubt that we'll be back looking at this after Christmas for 2017, let alone the 2018 season. I won't fight the decision, but IMO it's a poor one. This also leaves us with nothing to do until November, at which point about four teams will have something to do and the rest of us will be spectators. And you guys thought the last off-season was bordering on fatally long... |

Can we get some feedback from the other side please? I know RLL was the most staunch opponent of the cutbacks, would love to hear the thoughts of the bloke in the bottom six on the site for coaching activity on how exactly we should turn around the unacceptable levels of coaching activity. Lliam? |

Lummas' activity over the finals series may have saved him. As for Dono ... not great so far. In his defence he took over a shit list, but since he's been in the job he's probably only succeeded in making it even shittier. And list shitness is no excuse for failing to update team lists. |

This was the most broadly that the admin have ever consulted with the coaching group before making any site decision – so from that perspective, the process was solid. Personally - I swayed back and forth over much of the past month regarding my vote, and for the most part I was a fan of the 16-team model. I don’t disagree with Colby/stife that the reduced model could be a viable option, but at the end of the day there was a lot of support to remain as an 18 team competition – and having weighed up all the pros and cons; I also support it - for now. If the situation changes, or doesn't change, I'm sure we'll revisit this one. |

At one point it looked as though the reduced model would be the way we'd be going, and on that basis - every coach that had received scrutiny was "on the block". From my discussions with a number of coaches, I asked who would be the two coaches they would get rid of if they could wave a magic wand; there was actually no real consensus. Earlier in the year, Deledio2Conca, Lummas and Pinny were the three that gained a bit of momentum. Since then; -D2C has resigned on his own terms – broadly speaking. And we’ve replaced him with someone that we have a great deal of confidence in. Wacky Tig – don’t let us down! -Lummas has received almost universal support of late, and even some of the biggest advocates for his removal have gone on record as saying that he should stay. -Pinny has copped a bit of flack generally when there’s no other obvious scapegoat, but based on trading activity lately he’s been far from the worst, and his issues around failing to update his list have been a non-issue since his public warning earlier in the season. -Dono is the only person who lacked significant support – and it would be a fair reflection to suggest that he has bit of ground to make up to earn the respect of the broader playing group. It's worth noting also that none of these coaches were part of the half dozen that we identified in Stife’s infamous 2015 thread “An open and honest look at the state of AFFL”. Of the 6 coaches in the gun last year, two were sacked, two changed clubs, and two remain at their current club. |

I'm gonna be blunt on this one, but I'd be surprised to hear if there was anyone on the site who doesn't believe that we should probably call time on the Dono experiment. Now we're in a position where we absolutely have no choice but to stick with him, regardless of what happens to the Richmond list in the meantime. I understand that it's good to get Wacky a position, but at the same time I don't think it was essential that he get that job right now. Whether it's by stepping down or being pushed for lack of effort, we'll have someone else wash out by the start of the upcoming season with nobody to replace them with. I don't know guys, I just don't see how you can evaluate the state of the game over the two years and decide the best course of action is sticking with the status quo and hoping everyone picks up their game enough to justify it. My bet is we don't make it to the end of January before this starts getting a push once again. Edited by Colby, Aug 16 2016, 03:12 PM.

Essentially 17 coaches were seen as suitable and assets to the site. A 17 team competition was never a realistic option so it had to be 16 or 18. I'm going to be honest here, my vote as admin came down to two choices: A) Remain 18 strong and have Wacky as a coach (two desirable outcomes) B ) Reduce to 16 and Wacky not coach but also, it's highly likely that Dono would've been given time to adjust to the site as an observer (one desirable outcome, two undesirable outcomes (sorry Dono)). . |

That Sloane for Barlow & Hawkins trade was just about a sackable offence in and of itself. |

If same logic was applied to everyone's howler trades over the years, you'd have maybe 6 people playing AFFL. Put it this way, stife and myself made a dickload of shit ones - and we're two of your strongest now, so go figure. |

Well just to correct you there, I wasn't a "staunch opponent" at all and I think the other admins can confirm this. I'll admit that my slight preference was to remain as an 18 team competition, but only if the site would be stronger as an 18 team competition and I think with Wacky on board we are. As has already been explained, the site has already become stronger through this process and this will continue throughoit the off-season and into 2017. |

Have heard vastly different to your first point, and I just don't understand your second? How has the site grown stronger because of you guys deciding NOT to do anything? I'm not even saying it's the wrong call this time, I'm just wondering how exactly you think that's true? Also, to Eski's point. If the review found that we had 17 coaches who were all "an asset to the site" then the review was wrong. 17 assets to the site? C'mon. |

Also, on the topic of suggestions for next year and somewhat in response to point #3 in the OP, I'm going to suggest that we give Pinny his picks back for 2017. Yes, he's a dumb cunt and doesn't deserve it, but the list does. It's absolutely vital that we don't let any lists turn to complete garbage anymore and West Coast absolutely need to have their draft picks for next season if they're any hope of getting back to the bottom of the pack. The other choice is equalisation which I don't think anybody is keen on doing. |
