As much as I'm annoyed with the fact we're paying Pods I don't know why he's not a better option than any of our current available forwards, either. |

Tom Lynch is in Adelaide's best 10 players Jacobs should be dropped for McKernan Wright is the 2nd best clearance player at the club Brad Crouch was no good David McKay was rated higher than Danger Honestly Stife, your record on all things Adelaide is terrible. |

People only remember the failed calls :p MacKay was certainly a backfire, I do still believe that the club rated him through the roof for some reason though. Certainly hasn't improved as a player since he broke into the side though. We all know my motives for the crouch call were a little misplaced. And yeah, I do think Lynch is in our best 10 players. Walker, Talia, Rutten, Danger, Betts, Sloane, probably Douglas the only ones I could convincingly say are better. Crouch certainly on his way and if Wright has the season I expect he'll be ahead too, then blokes like Brown are awesome at their role and Laird/Otten/Jacobs probably form the next group. Thompson right now is nothing more than a normal 4th/5th midfielder and really, I'm sick of blokes who are your 22 possession ok users of the ball being considered guns over players who play their role better than most. In short Thompson's like the 50th best mid in the AFL if not worse. Lynch would be in the top 30-40 forwards so I'd have Lynch ahead of him. I think Lynch sits between 8th and 11th, yeah. The fact that he'd fit in anywhere on the part barring ruck and inside the center square and do well goes in his favour. And Wright certainly is the 2nd best clearance player at the club IMO. Crouch will challenge him for that this season but everyone's wanking over Wright right now and the part of his game that's best when he plays midfield is his clearance work. And I never said that Jacobs should be dropped for McKernan. I said I wouldn't have a problem with it. The new ruck rules really fuck Jacobs and it wouldn't be bad to see how someone who rucks with a completely different style goes with them, especially as McKernan offers a lot more around the ground. I don't think Jacobs is worse than McKernan though! |

Do you think Wright will go back to tagging once the season proper gets underway Stife? |

ftr this is just a 22 I'd start with off the top of my head FB: Otten - Rutten - Brown HB: Laird - Talia - Smith C: Sloane - Crouch - Douglas HF: Lynch - Johnston - Thompson FF: Petrenko - Podsiadly - Betts R: Jacobs - Wright - Dangerfield IC: Ellis-Yolmen - Matt Crouch - Reilly - Grigg Lyons/Shaw/Kerridge/Hartigan/Porps/Jenkins/McKernan/Jaensch/Mackay all really unlucky for mine Petrenko's pretty useful at providing pressure/forward tagging and you don't want too many cooks in the kitchen. Thompson's not the player he was but, a bit like ricciuto/goodwin, could be a 30-40 goal forward. Obviously having him on the flank isn't saying he should be a forward but I'd certainly back him to have more effect down there than Porps/Lyons/Another tall but we've got 5 better midfielders I reckon and we can't start them all. Obviously he'd spend a lot of the game through the middle and blokes like Wright/Danger would also rotate forward. Ellis-Yolmen looks a player too. Most probably haven't seen him but he plays a really different brand of footy and I kind of reckon we need that kind of player in there as the sub or something like that instead of vanilla players who can't be relied upon - Lyons/Kerridge/Mackay etc. |

I hope not. You'd hope his performances in the 2 nab challenge games have at least earnt him a shot at proving he's more useful when not tagging. He was a pretty fucking good forward for us in '12 iirc too so he's shown when he's free on a flank he's good, I reckon he could be even better through the middle. Van Berlo being out might hurt a bit and we certainly don't have a genuine tagger as a result but I wouldn't be surprised to see some other blokes be given a chance to earn a spot in the 22 as one. I think Kerridge has a game that might do a good job tagging, for example. Otherwise I can probably see Luke Brown/Brent Reilly/David MacKay doing it and if successful, continuing to do so. If Thompson continues to slide perhaps they'll see if he can too. Then again fuck taggers anyway. Shit footy |

I'd probably be likely to make the call if he'd played a full season but 14 games (especially when allowed to just float free) isn't a big sample at all. Still a bit to work on with his game to call him a top 50 midfielder in the league. But I've no doubt Crouch will perform better this year and I certainly think Crouch *is* a better player, I just can't justify calling it on 14 games when he's just floated free. |

Comapred with the what, 17 games that Lynch has played? He did nothing in two years at St Kilda, and did nothing in his first season at Adelaide. If anything I think it should work the other way - Lynch has been in the system for 4 years whereas Crouch has been for 1 (possibly 2) years. |

Ok stife. Crouch's debut season he went; 2nd at the club for disposals per game (behind only S Thompson by 0.18 disposals per game) 5th at the club for contested possessions per game. 5th at the club for clearances per game. Also Matt Wright who is apparently the certain 2nd best clearance player at the club, was not one of the 4 players who ranked ahead of Crouch in that category. Yes Wright had sub games, no that doesn't mean that we should double all his stats. He might also dominate the clearances in the SNAFL. But the facts remain... he has never been a top 4 place getter in Adelaide clearances, he's 24 y/o now and played close to 60 games. You would think that if he's the second best clearance player at the club, there'd be some plausible evidence to back it up. Which there isn't. |

He's been absolutely shafted for his whole career until '13 Never got the opportunities at the Saints and I don't know why, then came here, had a great nab cup and got a game in round 1 as the sub. 7 kicks, 1.2 in just over a quarter then the next week coming on as the sub mid Q1 thanks to injury and getting 17 touches, 11 marks and 2.1. That's a pretty good game. Can't really fault his r1 or r2 performance given the circumstances and then in R3 he gets to start and has a meh game, 2 goals and 6 touches (but then again as a forward 2 goals is still okay!) and is subbed before 3QT. Somehow despite either playing a role or going above expectations he's dropped until round 8 where he comes on at 3QT as the sub and gets 6 touches, then we don't see him again until round 16 Inbetween all of this he's either kicking bags down forward in the sanfl or getting 25-30+ touches off half back and not getting a chance. I don't know what he did wrong to get dropped and then he's pretty much set up to fail when he gets a chance. I'd say if he didn't kick that 10 against GWS despite the fact that now with hindsight we know he's got ability he'd not have had much of a career. I think the crows saw he was on the block at st kilda and realised that given the position the club was in, bringing in a player who'd been in the system a few years and was once a high pick was probably a better move than the kid they'd have got with the Maric pick (38?). I think he was brought in to be depth in case of injury and as such pencilled in as such. He didn't do anything wrong in 2012, really and still couldn't get a game until round 4 in 2013. I mean yeah, he hadn't done much until last season but I don't know what more he could have done to earn an opportunity to prove himself either. Shammy can go on about all my missed calls but really, I called Lynch as a good player well before he did anything of note, I called Johnston as a good player and when he eventually comes into the side he scores 11 goals in 5 games, two of which he really did exceptionally in. Yeah, small sample - but it's still a pretty good effort nonetheless. I called Laird as a good player (constructed a deal with Conca about him that ended up being much bigger but initially only wanted Laird) and pumped him up well before he broke through. Eddie will tell you if he were around how hard I chased wright before he broke out in '11 or '12 whenever it was too. Hartigan I called for an okay career and nobody bought it and he looks like being a good player and I also (along with RLL, to be fair) also called Ricky Henderson for being a gun well before he did anything of note. Yeah, as mentioned above I've got some publicly acknowledged shockers i.e. crouch and the mackay call (although it was more of a quote than a statement of my opinion on him) and I'll also fess up to thinking Petrenko would be far more damaging than he's turned out to be and I certainly didn't think Grigg had the game to be a good afl player and now I think I'm wrong there (hope, too!) but at the end of the day they're left field calls for a reason, normally when you make these ambitious/strange statements you're going against the grain and to be fair, I'm pretty happy with the strike rate I've got among crows as I hit more than I miss. And when I hit I'm certainly part of the minority. end overly emotional reply to shammy's throwaway comment |

I think Crouch is a gun. I love the bloke. I'm weary of professing it given where I've come from and the extent of my backflip and how I'm likely to be called on it but I don't dispute anything you're saying about him. As I said - Wright is a personal opinion. I believe if given the opportunity he'd show his proficiency for winning clearances. He's just been valuable as a flanker/tagger thus far and we haven't needed someone for clearances as we're already pretty reasonable there whereas we lacked flankers/taggers when wright played there. Just wait and see, I guess. It's a left field belief but it's one I think will be proven if he plays inside the squad much this season. I certainly understand the skepticism. |

Yeah I was about to say, Esky. Seemed a little strange lol. I love/used to love porps but after the borderline offensive 2013 he had I think he doesn't have rights on a spot anymore. Without looking imma gonna guess that McKernan's on your AFFL list too. Not sure about the Lyons love either. I certainly rated him as a kid and loved our pick and think he's a good player - and I certainly expected him to be one I just don't think he's a better player than what we've already got. Don't expect anyone else here to rate Ellis-Yolmen a best 22 prospect either. Aware I'm alone in that one but mark it down anyway for me to bump. |

Ellis-Yolmen is a huge upside, chances are will be a flop type imo. Has some glimpses of superstardom, and bucket loads of crap. Agree re: porps. If we look purely at 2013, his place in the 22 has to be questioned. |
