In all seriousness, I'd be very curious to see the finer details RLL. It would seem to me that you have quite the challenge ahead with the natural decline your own list is due to take in the next 12-18 months.

Montagna, Judd, Sandilands, Pavlich, A Goodes, B Goodes, Schneider, Bock, Lake, Glass all very real possibilities for retirement at seasons end IMO.

Take them out and WBD list looks quite ordinary, with very little coming through by way of young talent.

Obviously you will look to fob a few of them off in GF week, but the reality is there's going to be a fair challenge ahead to keep the Dogs fantasy relevant.

Would personally prefer Swallow to Daniher and Wines to Crouch.

Could be off on both accounts but I just don't see the logic, best case scenario he breaks even whilst taking two years backwards.
Great post Sham.

It's pretty much what Lummas has been doing during his whole time at Fremantle. Bring in a draft pick or a first year player, let them develop until they're just about to break out ... then trade them out for kid/pick.

I'm completely aware that there is a challenge ahead of me, but I think some people on this site are overestimating just how big it is.

Countless times during the 2013 season other people remarked that it was my last year of challenging and that it was an all or nothing season, but have a look at the names I lost to retirement:

Bret Thornton
David Rodan
Mark Nicoski
Ben Johnson

Not exactly a group of players that are going to be missed.

Just like last season I've got a number of blokes in the over 30's category, and those players may or may not retire. Even if they do, there is a loooong time between now and when the Premiership is decided. The most important thing is that every off-season age is made out to be so much more important.

Oh and I just wanted to add that in no way am I trying to wriggle my way out of a WBD rebuild. I considered it at the end of last season, and had a number of deals all lined up that would have rebuilt my list, but at the end of the day no one remembers who had the best rebuild, it's premierships that are remembered.

The facts are:
- The average age at the dogs now is higher than I can ever remember, and the likelihood of a downfall at the end of the 2014 season is now quite high.
- There's very few players on your list who will improve on their 2013 scoring. Waite, Pav, Sandi all possibilities, but any improvements there will be offset by natural declines elsewhere (in my opinion).

I understand that you've probably got the best intentions with the offer to help lummas out - and I'm not against the principle, but I would be disappointed if you bailed and left a team that in its current state would be on the brink of a massive collapse in 12 months time (again, my opinion).

Plan A - I'd much rather see you stay at the Dogs long term and get them through whatever the next chapter is - whether that be a premiership or a rebuild.

Plan B - If you're hell bent on a change of scenery, I'd much rather you put the side into a position where people would legitimately want to take them over, and then depart.

I'm not expecting you to respect or appreciate my thoughts, but thats my opinion.

All the best with whatever you decide.

Not 100% but the only thing i would add is that he is gunning to get the KPP player which may be hard t gain in 2 years time. Are they easily traded especially coming into their prime or is it one of the more valuable positions in the game?

KPF is by far the most valuable position when they break out and it's true that they will obviously gain value when they get closer to that, however I think some of us feel that Joe is 3 or 4 years away from really breaking out whereas Lummas has paid a price which would be fair if he was 1 year away.

Credit to Gav though, nobody gets more one sided deals across the line as him.

Lummas gets a lot of one-sided deals over the line, they're just never on his side.

Yeah I agree with you there, but that's been a conscious decision I made during the off-season. It's a long time between now and the end of the 2014 season though, my list could be completely different by then.

Obviously opinions are going to differ, but if three or less of the players on my list improve their average I'll buy you a slab and deliver it to you in person. You're either haven't looked closely enough or you're just flat out misguided.

If I was quitting as coach of the Bulldogs, then I'd completely agree with you that it was really shit form. But I'm not quitting. I'm simply exploring an option that could be a win win for those involved and for the site as a whole.

Misguided or not, I see more declines in the current WBD best 22 than improvements.

I also predict that 10 players on your list will retire in 2014.

It was a your decision to build the aged list, therefore I think it should be your responsibility to see the Doggies through the next phase - whatever that is.

Sorry mate it sounds like I'm having more of a stab than I actually am.

I just don't see how its a win for a coach who is often perceived to be struggling, to get handed a list that has to be carefully managed over the next 12 months to avoid doing a St Kilda-like drop.

You're a well credentialed coach who should be at the helm during the transition phase (whether it be rebuild or some slight repositioning to remain competitive).

You've changed from judging my list to now judging my best 22. Interesting.

Once again, you're acting as if I'm quitting as Bulldogs coach and expecting someone else to come in and take over. I'm not. All I'm doing is putting an offer out there.

By the way, I don't believe Lummas is struggling, that's why I've made him the offer. I wouldn't have done it if I thought he was struggling.

Your list, your 22, its all the same mate. There's little improvement or upside with either IMO.

Good to hear that you intend on sticking it out
