Fitzroy confirm.

We gain:

Cooney - provides us with a real captain option - and we think he'll up his production by another 10 or so points per game this year - we expect him to average over 100.

Gray is a small forward who averages 85 and isn't even even 22 yet. We see a move into the midfield for him eventually - and upping his average to 90.

Birchall - Hasn't quite exploded in the way everyone expected him to - but he averages over 80 and is only 22. With the emergence of Schoenmakers should really be released to play the loose man role.

Maric - I really like the kid. He's a bit injury prone - but he uses the ball really well and is great in front of the sticks. Hes quality - so he'll get games when he's fit and we eventually see him averaging 80's.

Archer - I had to get Dan in. He won't do much for a while yet - but he's a good mate of mine.

First round pick - gives me two picks in the first round. I'm happy with that.

Lose:

Gilbert - a huge loss - but i can't see him averaging 90 this year. I really can't. The longer Fisher is out, the more he'll get shown up for having poor decision making and composure.

Masten - my favourite player in the trade - and a huge loss. Can't see him averaging much over 90 in his career however.

Dangerfield - I see him as an impact player rather than a consistent gatherer of the ball, and he's not a tackler. Fantastic to watch, but i dunno if he's a SC'er.

Knights - Very solid SC'er. Averages around 80, week in, week out.

Bateman - he's 29. Could afford to move him on to get this over the line.

Nice trade for both parties.

And yes, Nick Maxwell is a pretty elite defender in this game.

Now that this deal is finally done, my reasoning ....

Melbourne would like to thank the following players who are departing:

Adam Cooney is in for a very good year. Tipping him as my smokey for the Brownlow in fact. Think he'll average 100-110 quite comfortably. Very sad to see him go as he's a personal favourite, but TFLUA was willing to pay the price I'd put on his head so I'm happy with that.
Robbie Gray is another big loss for me. A personal favourite who's been in the best all pre-season for Port. Just can't see how he's ever going to step up to be an elite scorer however.
Grant Birchall, well how could he be forgotten? haha! Consistent, without being great. Not KPD eligible like I'd hoped he'd develop into. Should improve a little this year, never going to be elite IMO.
Addam Maric. Meh. Good user of the ball. Just can't find the thing. Very average pre-season scores and he hasn't looked like becoming anything more than a small forward.
Dan Archer was picked up in the PSD because a mate said he goes alright. TFLUA is friends with him, so paid more than anyone else would have.

Melbourne would like to officially welcome the following players to our team ...

Chris Masten & Patrick Dangerfield. My god. Both a pair of absolute talents. Both will average 100+. Cannot believe I managed to pick them up, considering I would have paid a bit more. Masten has had a great and consistent pre-season. A joy to watch. Will be the centerpiece of a future elite midfield group at the Eagles.

Chris Knights was really just in there to even things up and give me a replacement small forward to fill Grays spot. Think he can improve his average by quite a bit this year too. Has a good footy brain is still very young.

Sam Gilbert. Great player. Reads the play fantastically and because the Saints backline share it around so much he'll always be a very good scorer. No reason why he can't keep up his average or even better it slightly with better decision making on occassions. His eligibility as a back-up key defensive player is incredibly valuable to me.

Chance Bateman. Well it was either him or some spuds, so I took him. He's in for an improved year too. Just what Hawthorn need and he's a fantastic player. A little too old for my team but should be a good scorer this year regardless.

The picks were barely noticeable for me. I'll be trading from low-mid 20's to high 20's, barely a difference and I get another fourth rounder too.

This whole trade talk included close to 250 PM's! Included many argument but also TFLUA gaining a little respect from me in the end. Once we got past the squabbling, you were actually really good to deal with mate. Cheers.

Wow, just wow. Extremely poor from Tigga, I've given many PM's over the last eternity regarding dangerfield, and none have been replied to. Now RLL has my favourite players (all bar bateman are in my top 10 faves) and are now never going to get them.

Doesn't mean he has to just accept it, I know I wouldn't and I don't think you would either.

How can you say Gray will never step and be an elite scorer yet Dangerfield will be 100+ ...

Gray has shown alot more than an injury prone talented TAC midfielder.

Danger is one of the most overhyped players in the comp.

Masten looks a much better prospect however.

Even trade for me, given Cooney will be around for a few years to come, and Birchall has another 10. Possibly a win to Fitzroy I'm thinking.

Added, to anyone who thinks Birchall cant be an elite player - you are crazy! He's like 21 and already a consistent player, imagine when he develops, he'll be a 100+ hands down.

Again, astounding to hear RLL say Danger will be 100+ but Birchall will never be elite?
Imo, it's the other way around.

It's just my opinion really ...

I can't see how Gray can do much more than what he's doing now. He doesn't have any major flaws to over come, so I can't see a massive jump in his scoring. I love to watch him as a player, but he just doesn't seem to be enough of an accumulator to step into the elite category.
As for Birchall, well this season will most likely prove me wrong. If he moves to the wing, he could become an elite scorer but I'm just not sold on that yet. So far he's been consist in what he doesn't, but hasn't shown the spectacular that's needed to be elite.

Dangerfield is the type of player that I see really becoming elite. He bursts open packs, and managed 19 games despite a terrible run during the pre-season. I don't see why he wouldn't become an elite scorer.

Not only did I reply - but RLL and i have been in talks for a LONG time, just ask him if you need confirmation.

I'm very happy with that multi-player deal, and there's no etiquette that states i have to let you better it.

I got an offer i was happy with, and took it. I don't understand how that's poor form.

I get what your saying RLL, but for me anyone who shows elite glimpses has the potential to be elite.

There was a stage Gary Ablett Jnr was a 14 possession, 2 goal player... not saying Gray will be a replica of Ablett, but his foundations and style of play are very similar at their respective ages.

Danger has broken away from a few packs, you need to seriously watch Gray if you assume he hasnt done all this and more.

As for Birchall... hmm.. for me, being consistent at 21 is a sign right there that he will be an elite player. There are 25-26 year olds out there who are less consistent than Birchall... when your a rebounding defender, consistency is the first step to becoming elite in my opinion. If someone nails that at before 23, then watch out...
