Fair enough Stoney, but nowhere have I said I'm trading to challenge this year (Sewell and Cross are 2 and 3 years younger than ling who has 3 years left according to you). So 5 and 6 years left each should mean I can make enough trades with wins to build a good enough squad to challenge if i'm good enough. I'm willing to back myself rather than go through the long path of a full rebuild. If it doesn't come off then fine and I'll be the first to say I wasn't up to it. But back to this trade, take out the fact it was me and rll, I don't see how it can be viewed that there was a real winner or loser. |

Very good point. The trade is an even one, but each team gains differently. |

I'd go as far to say that RLL would beat a 22 combined of the best of the rest |

Yeah I had a week off during finals, so I played an All-Stars team coached by Casey18 (shudder). Was made up of all teams that were out of finals contention, and those that also had the week of during finals. Won quite convincingly too. |

@ Stiffe... thats what I mean, you cant trade to beat his 22 for 2010. @ Dtm... I never said you expected to challenge, but if your not going to challenge, why trade for older guys is my point. Re Ling, has just been named skipper, and he does have 3 left in him. He wont be a terrific scorer, but he'll play. Sewell and Cross have peaked, and will decline, they may have 5 and 6 respectively, but cant see them being premium scorers for anymore than 3. If you rebuild smartly, a rebuild last 2 seasons max, and you'll have yourself a premiership team in the making. I'd rather 3 years of bottom dwelling then 7 grand finals, than 10 years of top 4 finishes and zero premierships. @ dtm take out the fact its you and rll - the actual managers have nothing to do with it. Its the team lists and where the team is at. A mid-ranked team trading for 2 players at their peak, over the age of 26.... |

I don't remember this. Shows how long this game has been going. I was probably playing in the finals at the time but. |

The thing with Birchall is that he always has been a consistent scorer without being spectacular |

I disagree with the way you rank the players. But that's fine as it's just different views. I will say though that elite scorers (which Cross and Sewell are - the scores don't lie) tend to be able to keep the high scores until they retire (or maybe the year they retire). Therefore I think you are wrong when you say they only have 3 premium scorers left. It's true you can rebuild smartly, but you can also trade smartly in 2 years and build up a strong team that way as rll has done. I want a challenge and the second option is more appealing to me. Also Gab is the same age as sewell and one year younger than cross. The way your talking, it sounds like I've traded out the best young player in the league for 2 old grandpas whereas they are all very similarly aged. Just re the last point you made, that is what i meant. Ie take out the fact its rll and myself and our lists. |

You were talking about a replacement for Cale Morton, and how this trade would affect his midfield rotations |

GAB is older as well, but being as good as he is, I assumed he could get the two players u got + something more.... Jr is definitly not young, just plenty of trade value. When you have someone like that you can get good youth. I see very few teams trading gun young stars for either sewell or cross tbh. If you take out the lists and whole point of the game, Sewell + Cross beat Ablett and Sheppard, but when you factor in list management, where lists currently are at etc, where they should be headed, what each list needs to do to win a premiership etc.... quiet time now stoney. farwell all til tomorrow. lol. |

Haha stoney, but surely if I keep winning every trade based on its merrits, I will end up with the best 22 players in the league eventually? I also have no intention atm of trading either Cross or Sewell as I think they can be part of a side that can challenge. Also, as I said previously, I'm not really interested in the young guns atm. Most are too overpriced. And Stoney, the market is not there for the 2 players and someone else. Well at least from no one that contacted me. Most thought my asking price was too high. Should I have taken lesser players from a lower ranked side than melbourne because it meant I gained ground on the Dees? I understand what you're saying, I just don't see why I should concentrate on anything other than making my side stronger. If I keep doing that I'll end up near the top - the only question is 'can i?' Anyway stoney, it's been an enjoyable arguement! Nice to have a reasoned one haha. |

2010 is what I was referring to. And even so, until RLL team gets older and slower, I think he'll be able to stay one step ahead of the comp. The real challenge is to ensure people who go after his guns in the long run dont end up paying top dollar for a 27 y/o Franklin, 29 y/o Reiwoldt or a 32 y/o Ablett Jnr. Age is the only thing I can see slowing Melb, but I'm sure some idiot coaches will make some trades that all but ensure they stay at the top forever.
