Melbourne recieve: Gary Ablett Jnr + Hamish Shepheard

Adelaide recieve: Brad Sewell + Daniel Cross

Sorry to give gab to Melbourne guys but he gave the best offer IMO. Basically I got rid of him because I wanted a bit of depth- something I lack. Two 100 ppg players helps that and sewell has improved by about ten points each year so can't see him not being a good captain for me. Shepheard was added due to my list size so a bit of a bonus for rll.

As for rll he gets an x factor that'll make him close to unstopable although I don't know whether ablett will have another 150 season.

Thanks to cleishy as well who was the only other coach really in the hunt.

Confirmed.
Was a little hesitant because I really like Cross and Sewell and I'm obviously giving up alot. But it's Ablett! I now have the best player to captain the best team.
Cheers dtm. A pleasure to deal with you, as always.

Disagree. good trade for Melbourne.

Sewell and Cross are good midfielders but unspectacular at best.

Neither will take Adelaide to a Flag, to be honest unless your a definite top 4 contender I dont see why you'd trade for mid-late 20s players, especially when you have a guy like Gary Ablett Jnr who could land you an abundance of youth that would set your team up for the enxt decade.

But each to their own... well done to RLL, and DTM is happy so i guess thats all that matters at the end of the day.

Melb = dead certainty as both Cross and Sewell are replaceable.

Think you're massively underaring sewell Stoney. Both him and cross have at least 4 seasons left and I really can't garauntee I'll be around when the next group of young players are starring.

I traded ablett for youth

Footscray recieve: Chris Yarran + Stephen Hill + Bernie Vince + Jack Grimes

Adelaide recieve: Gary Ablett Jnr + Travis Varcoe + Scott McMahon + Daniel Merrett + Andrew Raines

Got pick 1 with vince, so yeah.

Hmm you're probably right mate, just when I saw you advertising him I was expecting probably 3 x 90-100 players would b needed to get the great man.

Don't let me mislead your players, both a good consistent players, i had just built up (maybe a slightly bias) picture that Ablett couldve gotten more if the deal hadve been shopped more aggresively (ie pming clubs with offers ablett for player x, player y and player z).

Interesting to see that perhaps one of RLL's guys who maybe would have got the call up into his 22, Cale Morton, hurt a PCL over the weekend and will probably miss a bit of footy.

Was devasated. Apparently going to miss 10 weeks. He WAS going to be on my bench.
Ahh well. His brother now gets the call up. Birchall unlucky to miss.

Disagree. good trade for Melbourne.

dtm06 improves his teams total score by about 5 points per match and strengthens his 22.

RLL improves his team by about 2 points.

Provided the players keep their 09 averages.

Win for both.

A 5 point increase is massive! Shouldn't be underrated.

Dont get me wrong, i think a 5 point increase is great... but i still think GAB couldve gotten more if he hadve been on the market a month instead of a week.

I think RLL increases his team by more than 2 points, because players like Morton, Birchall, Greenwood are all due for breakout seasons (maybe not Morton now with the injury). I can see Cale being a 90+ and Birchall therebouts. His improving depth + Gary Ablett Jnr will result in a much more substantial increase than 2 points.

Was actually almost a four point increase on average with Ablett as captain, and Cale Morton coming into the team (based on 09 averages).

With dtm having specific needs for him to trade Ablett, I think he got the best deal possible.
He set out for a 110ppg scorer and a 100ppg scorer, and he got better than that. Definite win for him.

It might be a win-win in terms of addressing team needs, but in every trade there are two teams... and unless it is decided that the trade is a draw, there's a winner and a loser.

Given the calibre of players to replace Cross who has zero improvement left, I think Melbourne improve their list and chances of retaining the title moreso than Adelaide improve their chances of challening for the title.

= melbourne win for me.

I just dont understand why 2 x mid-late 20s scorers with no improvement left would be considered a win for the best captain in the game??

Here's the outcome, in simple terms:

- Adelaide improve their average score, which means they will probably make the 8.

- Melbourne get the best player in the comp to garuntee them a three-peat.

Dtm has stated he doesnt know if he'll still be around in 3-4 years, and thats fine. But im of the opinion that unless your going to win the comp (or have a realistic shot at it, ie definitly a top 2 or 3 team), then i dont see why you would trade the best player in the game for players with no improvement left in them. Esp when trade bait like Ablett couldve landed a bundle of youth that would help to set up the team post-Melbourne era.

RLL and Melb have a monopoly in this game and I cant see em being beaten. Trying to trade yourself in a team that can beat them, in my eyes, simply cannot be done with the quality and knowledge of the current group of managers.

Look at the lineup, the Dees have the best defenders (minus Lake) in the comp, they have the best two kp forwards imo for the next 2-3 seasons in Roo and Bud, their midfield is domiant, he has 2 of the clear cut top 3 rucks in the game (Sandi and Clark... Cox being the one he doesnt have), and they now have the best player/captain = 300 ppg instead of 250.

In summary, unless your content playing for second, there is no point trading for anything other than youth in this game.

That said, dtm may have increased his side's position up the ladder by 1 or 2 positions, and if that was his ultimate goal - then good work.

If your trade doesnt help you towards a premiership, then it's a loss in my eyes. Like it or not, it's my opinion and i'm just justifying why I think Melbourne won the trade.

Somewhat agree Stoney that RLL's team has become a farce (In a good way RLL haha) in that no one is going to get close....only thing people can hope for is a bad Round 22 for him and to catch him out...but it won't happen.

Disagree with the point that you can't trade to a premiership though. I'm of the opinion that you don't need a FULL rebuild to have a crack at the flag. All it takes is to spot a couple of sleepers and win your trades (even if only marginally)...and your team will get better and better as time goes on.

Obviously I don't agree with you. And I don't know why there can't be improvement in Cross and particularly Sewell who has improved to 111 and had about 10ppg for each of the past 4 seasons.

The way I see it stoney, I was nowhere near rll obviously before and am not now either. However, my team is stronger for the trade and I really don't see how that can be considered a loss for me. Maybe Melbourne are the bigger winners, and I could accept that, but at the end of the day I don't really care as long as I've done well out of the trade.

If there are losers it is those teams who can challenge him who didn't put in a serious offer.

And Stoney the market certainly wasn't there for 3 90- 100 ppg players for ablett. I've fielded offers for months now and that is a long way off the mark.

I am categorically saying that it is impossible to trade in a 22 that will average more than Melb in 2010.

In order to gain, you need to give... substantial wins in trades with 4 weeks until rd 1 of the afl season starts wont get you into contention. Note - minor wins in trades since 2007 gets you a team like RLL has right now ;)

All 16 teams have their good players locked or with extremely high asking prices, and these are the players you need to win the comp. But their spread between 15 teams, and no team gives up these players without wanting good in return. And as i said, slight wins wont get a premiership with only a month to go until Rd 1 of the afl season commences.

St.Kilda have the bulk of proven scorers, but wont give up ANY proven scorers bcoz they want to have a crack - and they have a realistic shot at 2nd imo, but as of next season their list will be as valuable as a $2 hooker.

To get the calibre of players into your side to actually beat Melb this year is rediculous. Freo are the only ones with a shot, should they trade Gibbs, Kruez and Murhpy in deal (ala the Selwood deal for Corey, Newman and Chapman, or the Naitanui deal for O'Keefe, Dal Santo and Guerra). - but other than Geelong, no other teams are willing to do those sorts of deals. So, unfortunately for Freo, I'm out of good players, and no other teams are willing to offload multiple big names for players who dont already score well / in pursduit of youth.

Okay, maybe I am overstating the market value of Ablett. I wouldve assumed it was stronger.

I'll call it a day on this thread with this post.

In no post did I ever insinuate Sewell / Cross were bad players, you got good players dont get me wrong. Theres a diff between no good and no improvement left. Their style of game, calibre of players that wont improve much on their current scores, if anything I think Sewell has peaked and will go down - again personal opinion. Cross has stagnated around the 100 for a few years now, and will stay there without improving.

Personally, I wouldve done thing different in your shoes, but thats the beauty of the game, everyone is doing what they need to do to win/improve according to how they believe will best accomplish that.

Hard to argue right or wrong, it's all about the individual i guess.
