Hello friends, I know there are probably a few on here wondering where I’ve been or what I’ve been doing and why the hell I haven’t been on and that’s more than justified. I hope I can explain everything but for those who are wondering, I will be stepping aside from my AFFL head coach duties effective immediately. It might sound like a cliché but it truly is with a heavy heart that I do this because while it’s my third time on the site, it is by far the most enjoyable I have had. I’ve felt accepted back into your little community and felt like I won as many trades as I lost – something I think is fair to say did not happen in the first couple of times all those years ago. As you know I got a new job recently writing for the website I created, AFL Draft Central – full-time. But it is a bit more than a full-time job in the sense that I have gone from a journalist role where I had the simple task of putting together enough articles to fill a few local papers, to now overseeing more than 40 volunteers who write for the site. On average I’m messaging/calling/emailing probably 20 plus people per day whether it is chasing up stories, ringing for interviews, or checking up to see if the writers are on track. We have only just started our coverage and it is only going to get busier. I approached RLL a few weeks ago about my concerns because even before I stepped foot in the office, I could tell this commitment was going to be like nothing I’ve ever been involved with before. For those like Stife who know how much passion I have for the site and dedication, I don’t want to leave any stone unturned in creating it into an global phenomenon which many might scoff at now, but in all seriousness, long-term we’re thinking ESPN type stuff – multiple sports on various sites (no impact on AFL Draft Central, but other sites coming under the Adzee Media company). I apologise wholeheartedly for not being on the last few weeks, the reason behind my absence was because I was still weighing up my decision, not wanting to leave, but every turn I took I realised there was literally only one conclusion. I did not want to make any trades that ultimately could be looked upon as “compromised” and I did not want to be that coach that traded out right before leaving, or even worse, stay on and then become the most hated coach when I went ‘missing’ for a week or two here or there. It is worth mentioning that it might be farewell from the coaching perspective, but I’ll still be around. There might be a few weeks where I go missing, or I might be on for a post every now and again, but I have enjoyed my time here and if the stars aligned in the future, I would have no hesitation putting my hand up again. I feel I threw everything I could into it up until the end of the year before my job took up my time. But the job means a lot to me and it’s more than just work, it’s a passion and I have to put it first. Other sites you can come and go, but the respect I have for AFFL, its history and all of you helped me make a tough decision easy. I just could not justify juggling the commitments without being a detriment to the site and that is the last thing I ever want to be. So in summary, I apologise for my absence, but hopefully you can all forgive me and understand my reasons behind stepping down. I did try and do the maths, but at the end of the day, it’s just not going to balance effectively. I’ll be around and look forward to chatting from time to time, but in terms of head coach, I will be taking a step back. Perhaps I will be able to provide more neutral draft analysis towards the end of the season, but either way I won’t be a stranger like I was for many years. Thanks for all your support and I again apologise for the decision I’ve made as it’s not one I’ve taken lightly. Thanks, Pie
