The cops know they are hunting a "Pro" group... Whether it is an inside job or not is unsure but, that the culprits know what to overcome and how to get what they want is pretty clear. Very sad for Car shows and the those that enjoy seeing these cars on display. As none of us want to see more cars hidden away under lock and key.. The whole situation puts a shiver up my spine, as it's bad enough that we have to watch out for normal car thieves let alone "Pro's" that have your particular car in their sites.... Lokjaw. |

Yes not good news at all You will all be horrified to hear that we took the Landau down to Wintersun - have been down the coast all week - have you missed me? Anyway, there were lots of police about, but obviously that didnt help these poor people with their beautiful cars. The guy with the hotrod apparently heard it start and then they did a huge burnout up the road and he saw it out the window screaming off into the distance...hopefully this is not the last time he see's it. This year we deliberately avoided staying at a place with a huge underground security carpark as you are too far away to hear or see anything...these were the places targeted last year and again this year. We had a place with an attached garage and we slept on the other side of the wall - no more than 1 metre away from our head was the car...they would have had to be really really quiet to sneak it out and luckily for us they didnt. Still the whole time we were there we took a different route home each time, just in case... It also made me look closely at anyone (and there were a lot!) who talked with us about the car for some time as you just never know if someone is actually just talking with you to find out how they can steal your car...makes the whole car show a bit depressing really. It will be a shame if this makes people stay away, but I totally understand why they would!Lisa |

It's an unfortunate downside of travelling away for a major event. The secure parking with your pride and joy right next to your room is the only way to go.(Adelaide GT nationals accom') Staying away from the central accommodation has some negatives but it pays off in the long run. |

Hey Lisa good to see you back on board, absolute disgrace that the show and the event is notorious for car theft of the vehicles people have poured their blood, sweat and $ on... it begs the question, how do you deter these types of thieves??? argh! |

thats the problem George, i dont think you can deter these AH, money talks and so its the guys OR girls at the top they need to look at. A car Jacker/thief/driver/transporter is only in it for the rush i think.. FOR EXAMPLE: you would never see allan moffat or the bowden family stealing an XA rpo sedan because they need spares for the phase 4 will you?? So the guy at the wheel has no interest in the car but to drive it as hard as he can and then get his money. Why can i see things getting so much worse for the car scene? it is so blatently clear that people love having a close up look at a classic at a show and talking to the owners etc etc.. but unfortunatly that might all be coming to an end and these cars.. not just coupes.. will go ack to the unfortunate days where they were locked up in the shed for so long that they became forgotten... like the way of some barn finds these days. |

A 24hr guarded secure lock-in eg: arrive whenever but no vehicles out until a certain time, then everyone can collect their vehicle at once and through one exit. Would work great for carshow type events, but not for the likes of Wintersun. |

Eddy is dead right! It doesn't cost much to hire a guard if there are a few of you. We "Classic Ford Club of Tassie" do it when there is a meet at the other end of the state and we stay the night. OR Use a mate's garage! We have members in every state now so I'm sure we could help each other out with accommodation for our coupes! Jon |

The place i stayed at during the Bathurst GT nationals years ago hired a security guard to watch the carpark, the young bloke on nights was a brighter spark than many. He realized pretty quick that although he had to let them past his little "guard post" anyone could drive off in one of the numerous cars he was tasked to watch over without him knowing if the guy really did own it or not, so he came up with a very clever trick. He got everyone to write their rego number down, and then under it, put a password. No password, no leave. His thinking was that the password allowed you the freedom of having a mate or family member get the car for you, but anyone without the correct password would not be allowed out. One guy forgot his password, the guard asked him straight off, whats in the glovebox? what brand of tyres are on the car? and whats your mobile number, then rang it to see if it'd go off in his pocket or not. We were all pretty impressed with his attention to detail, for a young bloke on a shitty wage he was above average in his approach to his job. And well tipped on the day everyone left. |
