Discussion down the pub last night, thought I would bring it to the knowledgeable sorts on here..........

For me:

1. Pele Had it all, World Cup winner at 17 scoring a spectacular goal in the final as well. Never even booked if I recall correctly, and still a role model to soccer players the world over
a distant second: Maradoughnut. Suspect temperament let him down despite his awesome skill. Too much whining, moaning and petulance. Great hands through......well one in particular
3.PLatini : for me, could do it all. Terriffic vision, passing and shooting. Also known to head the ball on occaision too.

Never really got the whole Cryff "thing". I thought he was more a part of great teams, rather than an individually great player. Really good, just not up with the Peles of this world.

Reads better if you typed and SHOULD BE a role model to soccer players the world over (the over-hyped/paid cheating players of todays games are more remembered for their antics rather then skills)

Agree with Pele as No 1 - and a true example of the word Sportsman in all it's meaning.

(Maradonna will always be a fat cheating pygmie as far as I'm concerned tho!)

Pele would be my top player as well and had he not have been robbed of his best years I think that Van Basten would have been know as one of the best players of all time and deffo was my face player ever.

I think that Maldini should be in any top 10 players fo all time both due the longevity of his career and the fact that he could play both left back and centre back with equal ease and oh yeah the fact that he was fecking superb.

Easily Maradona.

The way he carried the Argies was a sight to behold.

He's another one of those players that fit into my "hate them but would've loved them to play for Leeds" bracket

Cannot believe Ken Dodd of the Knotty Ash 3rd 11 1958/1974 has not been mentioned, he single handedly won them numerous league titles, most of them going into extra time.

Now back in the real world.

Think for me Pele was the greatest ever, Maradonna 2nd didnt like his 3rd album though. My unsung star player, if you forgive Diamond Lights(SEE WHAT I DID) has to be Glenn Hoddle. I believe him to be the best English player.

I was waiting until some wooly woofter mentioned Glennda Hoddle, so I wouldn't be called a ponce for doing so. great player, and for me, one of the top 10 of all time in the modern game. His range of passing was pure magic. Couldn't head it or tackle, but his vision was immaculate.

I always wondered who Beckham's role model was?

Somebody phoned radio 5 and said "Why is there so much sympathy for Ireland" and if it was England people would say "get on with it and stop your whinging". He must have forgot about Maradonna. * double smirk *

I think it's hilarious.

Just as I thought all the hand-wringing about Maradona was too.

It's football.

Leeds were beaten by Bayern Munich in '75. Jeff Astle was offside.

Get over it.

Not wanting to cause outrage, back to the original topic though, i believe one of the best players i have ever witnessed with my own eyes, has to be Terry Henry. That does not include his performance last night. His attempt to play Gaelic football was shameful.

I have to agree with you that Terry Henry is one of the best I have ever seen with my own eyes.

As far as who is the best ever I'd go for Maradonna. He carried 2 fairly average Argentina teams to consecutive world cup finals winning one of them all at the same time as having a massive cocaine habit. It makes you wonder what sort of player he'd have been without the problems he had. Or maybe it was those problems that made him great.

I wish that they would just forget it now and move on. Rules are rules, and the game is over. Would we give the French a replay if Keane or Doyle had handled it? I fucking doubt it. Pity for the referee and linesmen, who I thought were excellent up to that point. Thierry Henry getting called a cheat by Ant & Dec from Australia is a measure of how far he has fallen in my estimation, but that's his problem, he's hardly too worried on what I think of him. Maybe there should be a system like Rugby where they have the citing commissioner. If he was banned from the next 5 WC games he might learn his lesson. What happened to UEFA sticking their nose in as they did with Eduardo?

Good man, Thierry, set it all off again. He knows fucking well the French FA won't go with a replay, so why say they should? To salve his own conscience? He should have done that at the time. FIFA can't let this go to replay, as the consequences for the game will be horrific.

We see footballers cheat in nearly every match but what Henry did will taint him for the rest of his life now. A shame really because I agree with Daz and Carlo that he is one of the best players I have seen play live.
