It seems that free market is only a free market if it suits the government. Supermarkets are selling beer at a loss to get us into the shops. Pubs put on happy hours to entice customers, but the government are not happy. It is trying to stop the practices as in encourages binge drinking. Surely they should target the few who can't drink responsibly. What do you think. |

We're having exactly the same thing here. happy Hour has been banned, off licence hours have been cut to 10.30pm closing and the anti-drink capaigners want a 50c increase on the pint. Sod he fact that I have 6-7 pints once a week in my local, I should be targetted with the 16 pissheads who binge ILLEGALY. Stop the supply to them, not target the people who can hold their drink. |

I agree with the government here in respect to alcohol being too freely available and too cheap (well, in supermarkets anyway, not in pubs though. Its quite expensive there). If I was one of those minister types I wouldnt be harping on about how we need to put a minimum cost per unit on alcohol. I would ban the sale of alcohol from anywhere other than pubs, clubs and licenced restaurants. Outside of these areas I would also allow alcohol to be bought from specially registered Off Licences and they would not be allowed to sell to anyone under the age of 21. They would also have to price their products responsibly and seeing as the sale of alcohol would be their main source of income they wouldn't be making a loss on it by selling it cheap, thats for sure. I addition I would also ban the general sale of cigarettes from all shops and move these too to these off licences. If you want alcohol and/or cigarettes the you would have to go to an alcohol and cigarette shop. After all, if you want to buy a house you go to an estate agents. If you want your teeth looked at you go to a dentist If you want a burger and chips you go to McDonalds etc etc etc. I rest my case m'lord. |

I can see both sides of the coin here, but having lived with an alcoholic I can honestly say that it was cheap beer/cider offers that took him down the slippery slope. I'm not saying that he wouldn't have ever become a heavy drinker, but the cheap availability of it in a local off license definately encouraged his habit. What the government need to realise is that the majority of the population are responsible drinkers and that they should come down harder on pubs who continue to serve people who have already had a skinful, and those who sell to underage drinkers. A lot of the supermarkets in Wrexham have over 21 or over 25 policies where you have to provide ID if you look under these ages and this must go a long way in curbing the availablity to youngsters but parents should also be more accountable. |

I would say that the authorities need to be a lot harder on any shop found selling alchahol to under age drinkers, not penalise the rest of us responsible drinkers, who do not create any problems. Whacking the prices up would just be another stealth tax and it is like doubleing the price of petrol for everyone, in an attempt to stop speeding....ridiculous. |
