Not really a Dean Koontz fan. I read Soul Survivor but found it didn't create the tension like King does. Stephen King is god of horror in my opinion

King is pretty good but I find Koontz is better at Character Building. I think King lets himself down badly on that note. Although his books are generally a bit scary, I think this is diluted a bit by the fact that you dont really connect with his characters and therefore dont feel like you are "Sharing" their experiences. You do tend to get that with Koontz. I am suprised you dont think Koontz builds the suspense. I would recommend the Odd Thomas series or a book like Phantoms or Midnight.

Another thing you get with Koontz that you dont really get with King is continuation. Koontz likes to feature his characters in more than one book, the Odd Thomas series being a prime example. I also think Koontz has a wider scope than King as well. King is pretty much all out Horror, where as Koontz touches many genres, from the supanatural through SciFi to just your plain old ordinary household phsycopathic serial killer. He has even written a few childrens books. If you have any kids, I would highly recommend "Santas Twin" and the follow on "Robot Santa"

To be fair, I am basing my views of Koontz on the one book I have read, so its not really a thoroughly knowledgable. If you were to recommend any of his books (bearing in mind I love king books so that sort of book I like) what would you recommend? I might stick some on my christmas list for santa to bring me

really very nice person
i agree that Koontz does build his characters very well, that's why i used to enjoy reading him, but then i found he was spending possibly more time on that than fabricating a good scary storyline. I love Koontz's early stuff, but the last few i read turned me away from him. Probably haven't read one of his for a couple of years now..maybe i should try again?

Midnight has got to be my favourite. Phantoms is a good read as is Watchers, but I would recommend Midnight.

Check out the reviews/info on my site: -

Midnight

Phantoms

Watchers

King was the Daddy, but not as good as he was. Have to disagree with Quej on the characters, I do feel connected to them in most books, and as for continuation, the Dark Tower series is quite possibly the most absorbing read I have ever had.
Odd Thomas series were very good, well worth a read. Sad, but hopeful at the same time.

Jonathan Connelly will be the new Daddy if he starts writing about different charcters. Charlie Parker, Louis and Angel are great, but he needs to find new material now.

The "Odd Thomas" series was pretty good.
