Spurs close season spending now tops £58.5 million (not including two players signed for undisclosed sums). Admittedly they have sold £24.6 million worth of players with a few for undisclosed sums, but surely given the predicted financial climate this is suicidal spending?

PL clubs get over £50m TV revenue a season, so on that basis they are still in credit.

Makes me laugh how liverpools ground has been stopped/delayed due to the credit crunch, then they sign players on £60,00 a week

If the economy goes into recession football will not be insulated from its effects. Attendances (and incidental sales) will be the first to drop and then will come the cancellations of Sky or Setanta sports subscriptions, that will put the likes of Sky under pressure which if it gets really serious could see something akin to the ITV Digital collapse.

Spurs being subsidised by Sunderland certainly helps them. Getting rid of a load of reserves for premium prices was a great bit of business.

Keane can burn through money faster than O'Leary, shame it won't have the same consequences though.

I think them taking out a £75million loan at the start of this year is how they've managed to spend all that money.

Manchester City have beaten Chelsea to the signing of Brazilian forward Robinho from Real Madrid for a British record transfer fee of about £32.5m.

Chelsea have been chasing the 24-year-old but City have captured him on a four-year deal with a late bid.

"I am absolutely delighted to get the opportunity to work with such an incredible talent like Robinho," City boss Mark Hughes told the club website.

"This is a real statement of intent as to the ambitions of Manchester City."

He added: "I have said that in order to compete with the best teams in the Premier League we have to be in the market for players of this calibre, and Robinho is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world.

"I am really looking forward to introducing him to the rest of the squad, and to the City fans at the earliest opportunity."
