Bit of a lads night on last night, few beers, gruesome DVDs..... Saw IV wasn't half bad, and yes there will be 5. In danger of disappearing up its own arse trying to be too clever and complicated. I had Jigsaw's apprentice tapped halfway through Saw III. Go out gracefully, people. Hostel II - Carbon copy of the first one, but more unbelievable. Worldwide connection of "hunters" now apparently, instead of the more believable small clique. Should have stopped after the first one - it had novelty value, this had nothing. Unless you're a man, then it had the leg-crossing, eye squeezing, testicle retracting last 5 minutes. |

Am looking to book a short break away later this year, probably only really 2 days cos of berrycake, and am considering Paris, overseas but near. Anyone been and rate or dont rate it? Apart from one overnight trip to Euro Disney in 1994 (of which all the travelling was at night so got to see nothing) I havent been. Opinions much appreciated. |

How are you travelling? I found the coach trip long and boring especially for the 3 days I went it just seemed like most of it was driving. |

I've been to Paris numerous times recently due to 'other half being on year abroad there, and personally i'm not a fan. Don't hate it/dislike it, just don't think it's anything special. Tourist areas are very crowded and everything's so expensive, i'm sure there are great places that i've missed though. Go to Brugges or Amsterdam instead. |

my word. after reading many a thread on these gruesome films, one of my mates had Hostel II on in the background whilst I was reading, so I thought I'd watch a few minutes to see what Cuppy and Fitz love so much about horror films. each to their own i'll say, bloody awful :( even though it was the middle of the day I just couldnt bear to watch it! I'll stick to my thought provoking arty films I think :( :( :( *disturbed* sav x |

Although hugely biased in favour of it of course, I would agree with Jacks points. Becuase of it being one of the major destinations for short breaks, everything is very expensive, eating out especially, though of course the food is lovely, but shops are overpriced.... in fact, its just like going to London, except the tubes arent quite so well organised / clean. People find Paris a little dirty, but then it is a capital city, London is just the same. If you want a few days break in a European city, there are nicer / more relaxing places, but if its becuase you want to see the sites of paris... go to paris... obviously. Eiffel Tower, quick tour of the Louvre, historical monuments etc, easily fill 3 days. If you want something less rushed or expensive, like Jack says, Brugges is lovely, as is Brussels (cant BELEIVE i'm bigging up Belgium!) else Copenhagen was lovely when i went, or any Italian city bar Naples makes for a lovely, cultured, relaxed break away. |

Whats the female equivalent of "ponce"? :lolanimate: First off, Savarella, never, ever watch any of the genre during the day. Too much eating to be done afterwards. Secondly, Hostel II is shit. The first one had shock value, and the story was genuinely disturbing. The fact that two of the main bad guys from Hostel II had been in Desperate Houswives was fucking ludicrous, in the extreme. (The murdering pharmacist and Terry Hatchers ex-hubby) Saw, on the other hand is genuinely clever. First one was outstanding, great twists and turns. The second, while it did fit in to the overall story, doesn't "feel" right. It feels too much like a stand alone movie, and I did enjoy it. III & IV on the other hand seem to bring the overall story on and explain bits and pieces from the previous movies. It actually feels now like they had originally planned 5 or 6 of these, a bit like LoTR but with ultra violence. |

*gulp* I dont know if i could watch anything more disturbing. I didnt really know the story at all, just that there were girls in a foreign country with some people trying to get them for some reason... that was enough for me and the torturous screaming in the background whilst I'm trying to read Great Expectations...!! I suppose yes i'm a female ponce, I shall admit - I much prefer 'nice' films, something with lots of emotion, a bit arty, or something to ponder over... Typical English student I suppose! Things like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Donnie Darko, A Beautiful Mind, Butterfly Effect.... much more up my street :) I once tried to watch Saw when it was on TV - i got 20mins in and I couldnt bear it any longer :( so I watched a Disney film instead! Maybe one day I'll pluck up the courage! :( |

You know I'm only joking, pet. I like the films you mentioned too, just like a bit of gore now and again, too. Hostel was allegedly based around a supposed true story where rich people paid big money to torture/maim and kill student backpackers that had been snatched. Not sure if it was supposed to be in Europe, but Thailand rings a bell. No point in trying to force yourself to watch films that are so inherently unpleasant, either. Will do you no harm to give them a wide berth. |

hehe, yes probably best. I like clever films though, with a bit of depth to them, and everone says that i'd like Saw in that way... so perhaps in the middle of summer when its very light and i've got lots of cushions to hide behind when i feel necessary... then i'll give it another go. its silly really, but films like that often stay on my mind for weeks so i get dead paranoid! ridiculous i know!! on film convo anyway, I watched August Rush last night, which came out on DVD this week and was in the cinema a few months ago. IMDB describes it as... "The story of a charismatic young Irish guitarist and a sheltered young cellist who have a chance encounter one magical night above New York's Washington Square, but are soon torn apart, leaving in their wake an infant, August Rush, orphaned by circumstance. Now performing on the streets of New York and cared for by a mysterious stranger, August uses his remarkable musical talent to seek the parents from whom he was separated at birth." It was very touching, a little far fetched, extrememly teary but nice for a rainy afternoon in for those who like happy stories! |

It might have been clever, it might have had suspense, but gore it certainly didn't have. Not even enough to be an 18 IMO. Everyone kept telling me how you saw a man cut his foot off, yet tyey didn't even show it!!! |

Love the Saw movies. Am not sure why I like them myself, I can watch gory, slasher movies no worries, but psychological ones are the ones I cant handle. Hauntings and stuff like that. Fracture arrived yesterday (not a horror, a thriller) so might settle down and watch that this afternoon |

Definitely would recommend Bruges - more laid back, less of a rip off, and just as lovely (if smaller!). I'd have a look at the cheap airlines and see where they fly - there's some lovely places you can get to for next to f*ck all (Carcasonne and Bourdeaux for example). Other places I'd go again to are Vienna and Prague - timeless classics if you go to the right places. |

Amanda slicing open her "room mate" to get the key? The Asian cop getting his head blown off while chasing Jigsaw? Not a whole lot, granted, but it certainly stepped up for the rest. |
