I don't know if any of you caught this programme after Long Way Down last night, but it was a documentary highlighting the plight of 'disabled' children in a care home in Bulgaria.
Basically these children are abandoned by their parents as they are blind/deaf/midly autistic, then they are left to quite literally waste away in this care home which is typical of any found in Bulgaria. No one talks to these kids so they don't learn to speak, they are given no education whatsoever, they are simply fed very basic rations and washed daily. Most of the kids get to a point where they are so malnourished they are classified as bedbound, which is the beginning of the end for them. They end up with broken limbs which aren't properly treated and live their lives in hunger and constant pain. Even watching them being fed brought tears to my eyes- the food was practically shovelled into their mouths at such a speed I'm amazed they didn't choke.
Anyway what really galls me, aprt from the clear suffering of these kids, is that Bulgaria is in the EU and this is allowed to go on. Methinks I might write to my Euro MP about this.

I didn't see the programme but I've seen the news clips about it. Its just appaulling. Always get emotional about things like this cos my sister is mentally handicapped and I just cant get my head around the fact that there are people in this world that can treat innocent children (and adults) in such a non human way. It really makes me so very angry. Get writing matess, think I might do the same thing
