Pompey unveil new youth boss

Portsmouth have appointed former Nottingham Forest and Leeds United manager Paul Hart as Director of Youth Operations.
Hart has been brought in to develop a long-term strategy for the development of young players and will be a key figure in Pompey's bid for Academy status with plans having been drawn up to build a new 55-acre state-of-the-art training facility in Titchfield.

Chief Executive Peter Storrie said: "The club is committed to developing a solid foundation for the future based on home-grown talent and there is no one better at doing that than Paul. He has proved in his time at both Leeds United and Nottingham Forest that he has the ability to bring out the potential in young players and turn them into professional footballers who can play at the highest level. Paul will work with the existing team and with Mark Kelly, Head of Youth Development, who are doing an excellent job."

Paul Hart said: "Portsmouth is a club that has big ambitions for the future. I've been very impressed by the club's plans both on and off the field, and a successful Academy and youth operation will play a big part in that. I'm looking forward to working with everyone at the club including the existing youth set-up."

Hart took the Leeds youth team to FA Youth Cup victory in 1993 and 1997 and some of the players from those teams were the backbone of the side that reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2000/2001.

-----------------------------------

I would have loved to have Paul back with us. He is an exellent finder and developer of young talent. We have some exellent kids coming through but we can't take our eye off the ball. Also, could having Paul at the club help attract some more of the top kids to come to us? Could it have kept Martin Woods and the other lads with us? I don't know the answers but it does make me wonder. The other thing is that Paul connects us to the 'old' Leeds and his appointment may have helped ease some of the current tentions between fans and the 'Chelsea boys'. Given the fans a slightly bigger light at the end of the tunnel. The idea of possibly having a team with the backbone made up of our academy kids next year is the one thought that comforts me at the minute.

I thought when we got relegated from the prem we'd build a team around our youth players.

We then signed Butler, Gregan, Deane, Joachim, Sullivan and a whole host of other ageing players.

I expect more of the same this time, but an even worse standard of player.

I will be absolutely gutted if we can't make use of the kids who are coming through at the moment. There will be something very wrong if we don't have a team built around our academy in the next couple of years.

if even we were able to get a fair price for the ones we are letting go and not letting them go or indeed give them a chance to prove themselves before we turf them out e.g. Keogh

When we went down last time we had Lennon, Carson, and Keogh playing in our reserves. None of them got a look in until Oster decided to get his cock out.

Granted that was Blackwell, and we all know how much he loved his cart-horses, hence the less than glamorous Walton (a true turd of a player) got a game.

If we go down, and actyually even if we don't, we need to start giving some time on the pitch to Rothery, Rose, Howson, Elliott and any of the other youngsters that might just make it & don't orget that we have Parker coming back after a year out on loan and Beckford back after hitting quite a few goals for Soops rude wordhorpe who just love taking our leftovers and getting the best out of them.
